The best (store-bought) mashed potatoes?

Some times I buy potatoes and then don't use them before they go bad. Especially now in warm weather.

I'm ready to try ready-mashed potatoes.

Which brands have you used and liked best?

I keep the Idaho brand potato buds(dried) in the cabinet for times like this.BUT i did find that i don't like them the way they say to make them,as i think they are toooooooooooo thick.So i add up the amount of milk and water called for then divide it in 1/2.I've served them to family and friends and they didn't notice the difference.
Works for me.

We like the Country Crock brand in the dairy section. The sweet potatoes are good, too. There are lots of brands out there now so I'm anxious to see what other people have tried.

Mari, If I have a choice, as one does in the spring, between certified seed potatoes and potatoes from the grocery store, I will always choose certified seed potatoes. The "certified" means that they have been tested and are certified to be free of diseases that can cause you to lose your crop. I think probably they have been sprayed with something, too, to prevent disease. Because potatoes are prone to many diseases, you increase your odds of getting a good, disease-free yield if you plant certified seed potatoes. I've grown them both ways over the years--from grocery store potatoes and from certified seed potatoes, and I always have more disease issues with grocery store potatoes. When planting for fall, it is virtually impossible to find certified seed potatoes either locally or online for planting in late summer for a fall harvest. No one carries them locally in southern Oklahoma because so few people plant them (or anything else) for fall. Online retailers, like Wood Prairie Farm, usually sell out of their year's supply of seed potatoes by May or June. Sometimes, I harvest spring-planted potatoes early enough that I can use some of them for fall seed potatoes. (They have to go through a dormancy of a couple of months before they can initate sprouts.) For that to work, I have to harvest them in early June to have even a chance of them sprouting in August. Usually, for fall potatoes, I go to an organic Grocery Store like Whole Foods or Central Market (in the Dallas-Fort Worth area 80 miles south of us) and buy organic potatoes to use as seed potatoes. Why organic? Because conventionally-raised potatoes are often sprayed with an anti-sprouting agent to prevent them from sprouting. Also, I like to grow some of the unusual heirloom fingerling type potatoes, and Whole Foods or Central Market have a larger selection than any store near me. I don't make a special trip (especially with this year's fuel prices) to get seed potatoes, but pick them up when we are on a shopping trip for school clothes. (No kids left in school, but DS's fiancee' is still in college and we like to go clothes shopping in July before she heads off to college in August, so I'll get my seed potatoes then--maybe this week.) It is possible to plant potatoes for fall, but it is sometimes difficult to get them to grow in hot soil. Your chances for success are best if you plant them in soil that is mulched to keep it cooler. Also, temporarily shading the ground OR the containers to keep them cooler during the hottest part of the day helps. As the weather cools, the shading will not be necessary. Green-sprouting the potatoes indoors is preferable....I do it both in the spring and the fall. I'll find and link some info on growing potatoes above the ground....people do it in flower-pot type containers, plastic or rubber trash cans with holes drilled for drainage, wire cages filled with compost and mulch, bushel baskets, or even just potatoes laid on bare soil and then covered with compost and mulch. As the plants grow, you pile up more and more compost, soil or mulch around them. This is called "dirting" the potatoes and it increases your yield. If you have potato bugs in your area, nothing will keep them away from your plants, but they are easy to hand-pick and drown in a bucket of soapy water OR flick off the plant and squish under your shoe. Or, you can use the specific Bt (a bacteria) product that targets the Colorado Potato Beetle. I didn't have any Colorado Potato Beetles this year, and usually I do, so maybe they are not too bad this year. For enhanced mashed potatoes, these are amazing. The best I've ever had in beyond basic mashed potato. I had them at a potluck recently and tracked down the cook for the recipe. She used red potatoes and no green onion and they are A LOT better than other make ahead cream cheese mashed potato recipes I've used. Maybe it's the proportions. Peel, cube and boil russet potatoes until done but not falling apart. Drain, return to pan and shake the potatoes dry until scaly/flaky. Thank you everyone! Grainlady, you solved a problem I was having with by suggesting your recipe. It's printed out and attached to my notes and already on my shopping list. We live in Arizona and like a lot of other places, the temps here have been so high that we've been compared to Death Valley temps. Ugh! We were up to 128-129 for a couple days. Double ugh! But hey, it's cooled down to 121 for the past couple of days. :) The pumpkin parfaits couldn't be more perfect and will be one less thing to heat the house up and something the younger kids can put together. We downsized drastically when we bought this home and moved about seven months ago. My kitchen doesn't have half the counter and prep space that I had before...or any other space that we had before. Liz, our friends and family will be helping but I'm kinda OCD about my Thanksgiving dinners. But in planning I'm realizing that it's time to get over it. Strangely, not so much with other meals and since everyone is volunteering kitchen clean-up, meal suggestions, shopping and cooking it's really going to make it easy. So far we have about 35 people arriving in a two week period, with a 4-day window when everyone will be here together. We're expecting that number to rise somewhat in the next couple of weeks. We're lucky that we live very close to a lake and boats, PWC's and a couple motorhomes will be in the mix and arriving as well as our boat and pool, even tho it's a smallish pool. A surprise that we got yesterday was that our neighbor offered us the use of his house! We live in a town where a very significant percent of the homes are owned by out-of-towners as vacation homes and snow bird homes so they sit unoccupied most of the time. Our one neighbor, who we've only met/seen three times had come out to check on his house from out of state and we asked him if it would be ok if our visitors could park in front of his home (on the street) if he wasn't going to be here. Half an hour later his wife came over with the keys to their house and asked if we wanted to use it. We was absolutely stunned! Even today I can't believe it but I did call around and found a cleaning company for after all the company leaves. My husband and I also decided to pay for one month's of their water and other utilities bills so that they aren't incurring a cost as well as take them out for a nice dinner when they're back in town. I made PW's recipe yesterday and my husband didn't complain too much but he wasn't overly excited about it either. I froze a good portion of it as I want to see how it is after defrosting and warming. But, like Annie, I like mashed potatoes the traditonal way and have always made it that way with butter, a little cream and S&P. So that will most likely be the route I take, especially if someone else does all the peeling.That is probably the one thing I hate to do in any meal that calls for potatoes. Here's the basics of how I plan on doing all the hot foods: 2 turkeys - one stuffed, the other not - the 'empty' one done outside in the roaster the day before and the stuffed one done in the roaster outside the day of. Ham - spiral, wrapped in foil and warmed on the grill Two sides (yet to be determined, but sure one will be spiced yams) will be done in crock pots...you guessed it, outside. Deviled eggs started the day before. I'm also toying with the idea of making LindaC's cranberry Jezebel but haven't decided for sure. I've had the recipe for years but have never made it. Potatoes will be done inside and like suggested above, will put them on a back burner. Just so happens that I have a warmer spot on my stove that I've never used so thanx for the suggestion/reminder. I also have two warming plates so I'm sure those will be in use as well. Any other sides will be lighter and cold dishes and easy to make ahead. Our niece's BF makes breads and he's already volunteered to do all the bread and roll making, as well as breakfast rolls. Think that will be done at the neighbor's house. Alot of the eating will be done sitting on the floor or any other place that can be found. Nothing formal about this get-together or turkey dinner. One thing I never do is make appies.........I want everyone very hungry, so a light fruit breakfast the morning of the turkey dinner. Which is why they probably all think my meals are so spectacular because they're all half starving by the time dinner was completely ready. I'm sorry this got so long and that I've been rambling on. I am so very excited about next month and all the company that will be here. We have some wonderful long time friends and family and it's going to be oh-so worth all the time and effort. @gardengrl66 z5, I think my mother had a masher like that! Like the best of both tined and grid. The grid one that's still there is ideal for hummus. For most things I prefer the daisy style tines. But I don't find the big ricer hard to clean. A pain to store, but for cleaning it give it a quick rinse so bits don't harden in the holes and edges and set it aside, then I put it in the DW, top rack, after the main dishes are done. It gets first priority in, so there's room for it. :) And they keep saying the DW uses less water. :) Back when we could have the mobs, I also used said ricer for dozens of the Andrew Zimmern Killer Potato Latkes. They're two kinds of potato, one grated and one mashed, and as good as he says. :) So, on TV, on all sorts of judged competitions, those judges cringe when people put mashed potatoes in a stand mixer or pro blender. It's supposed to make them gluey. I'm not surprised, having often made actual glue and resist (i.e., easily washed out glue) from starchy things. Given the successes of our friends above, I'm convinced that a little aeration from a handmixer can be equivalent to beating with a wooden spoon, but that's a whole different thing from letting the big boys run.

I've had the Country Crock brand, and they are OK, but I prefer the Idaho brand potato buds! They seem fluffier...and they are less expensive.

Bought boxed potatoes for a family emergency. Had to feed a hungry crowd in a hurry. Found the Idaho homestyle tastes like potatoes! Who knew? I've been a fan ever since.

I also have been known to buy the Idaho loaded potatoes in the pouch, thin it and eat it as soup with a little chedder on top.

I've really taken a liken to "Idahoan" brand of dried potatoes. I also use less liquid and use half and half instead of milk. I especially like their "Baby Reds."

I buy WalMarts brand...the secret to making good instant potatoes is use all milk and a little more butter ...no water at all!

The Country Crock brand mashed is all we get up here. They are in the refrigerated section and very good! For real potatoes that is.
I just don't like instant mashed (dried) potatoes. They are cheaper though.

I am another fan of Idahoan boxed potates. They are really good, and I prefer them over the real thing.
You can add green veggies to them, or sub sour cream for some of the milk and it really adds a nice twist to them.
So easy and simple.

I sometimes use the boxed potatoe buds that are flavored in a pinch. Like CR said it makes a difference if you use whole mik and real butter.

Bob Evans are our favorite ready-made mashed. Costco had the best boxed reds but they don't have them anymore. They still have the Idahoan ones which I'm sure are very good but they also had an all-natural brand that was fantastic.

Another fan of Idahoan!

My sis-in-law turned me on to them last week. They are SO quick, SO easy, & SO delish! The whole family liked them, even the little grand kids. (And I've never been a big fan of "instant potatoes".... until now.) I used the microwave directions & added a bit of margarine. Mmmmmm mmmm!

Another good use for the boxed potatos. I use it to thicken my potato soup. Really works great! I imagine it could be used in a pinch to thicken about any cream type recipe.

Idahoans here too! I also use lots of butter and more milk than water and add more milk as needed.I also add heavy cream if I have it and sometimes sour cream.
When we had our little cafe a few years ago I always made mashed potatoes from scratch.One day I was low on potatoes and needed to make them for the dinner run and didn't have time to go to the store for more potatoes.I had a can of instants and about 4 potatoes,so I peeled and sliced them and cooked them as I would for mashed potatoes.When they were done I added butter and salt and pepper and blended them up in the cooking water with the hand mixer.They looked like potato soup at this point.Then I added the potato flakes until they were thick.Then I added enough milk to make them the right consistency.Everyone raved about the mashed potatoes.What had I done? They were "even better than the usual ones I always made".LOL To this day I still make them that way for my family and they all love them.When it's just DH and I and we are hungry for mashed potatoes I just get out the can of Idahoans.He has never liked instant potatoes but likes this brand.

Idahoans here too, but I will buy WalMart brand and use Sour Cream with the milk and real butter in those. Both are delicious and I have served them to guests that refuse to even consider boxed potatos and they never knew the difference. I know they would have said so if they noticed.

Watching your fat intake? I just tried my first mashed sweet potatoes called Simply Potatoes. You don't add anything and cook them in the micro dish they come in for 4 minutes. I choose them over regular whites because they contain a lot less saturated fat and plenty of flavor with brown sugar and Cinnamon already added.
