The best (store-bought) mashed potatoes?

Some times I buy potatoes and then don't use them before they go bad. Especially now in warm weather.

I'm ready to try ready-mashed potatoes.

Which brands have you used and liked best?

I keep the Idaho brand potato buds(dried) in the cabinet for times like this.BUT i did find that i don't like them the way they say to make them,as i think they are toooooooooooo thick.So i add up the amount of milk and water called for then divide it in 1/2.I've served them to family and friends and they didn't notice the difference.
Works for me.

We like the Country Crock brand in the dairy section. The sweet potatoes are good, too. There are lots of brands out there now so I'm anxious to see what other people have tried.

Mari, If I have a choice, as one does in the spring, between certified seed potatoes and potatoes from the grocery store, I will always choose certified seed potatoes. The "certified" means that they have been tested and are certified to be free of diseases that can cause you to lose your crop. I think probably they have been sprayed with something, too, to prevent disease. Because potatoes are prone to many diseases, you increase your odds of getting a good, disease-free yield if you plant certified seed potatoes. I've grown them both ways over the years--from grocery store potatoes and from certified seed potatoes, and I always have more disease issues with grocery store potatoes. When planting for fall, it is virtually impossible to find certified seed potatoes either locally or online for planting in late summer for a fall harvest. No one carries them locally in southern Oklahoma because so few people plant them (or anything else) for fall. Online retailers, like Wood Prairie Farm, usually sell out of their year's supply of seed potatoes by May or June. Sometimes, I harvest spring-planted potatoes early enough that I can use some of them for fall seed potatoes. (They have to go through a dormancy of a couple of months before they can initate sprouts.) For that to work, I have to harvest them in early June to have even a chance of them sprouting in August. Usually, for fall potatoes, I go to an organic Grocery Store like Whole Foods or Central Market (in the Dallas-Fort Worth area 80 miles south of us) and buy organic potatoes to use as seed potatoes. Why organic? Because conventionally-raised potatoes are often sprayed with an anti-sprouting agent to prevent them from sprouting. Also, I like to grow some of the unusual heirloom fingerling type potatoes, and Whole Foods or Central Market have a larger selection than any store near me. I don't make a special trip (especially with this year's fuel prices) to get seed potatoes, but pick them up when we are on a shopping trip for school clothes. (No kids left in school, but DS's fiancee' is still in college and we like to go clothes shopping in July before she heads off to college in August, so I'll get my seed potatoes then--maybe this week.) It is possible to plant potatoes for fall, but it is sometimes difficult to get them to grow in hot soil. Your chances for success are best if you plant them in soil that is mulched to keep it cooler. Also, temporarily shading the ground OR the containers to keep them cooler during the hottest part of the day helps. As the weather cools, the shading will not be necessary. Green-sprouting the potatoes indoors is preferable....I do it both in the spring and the fall. I'll find and link some info on growing potatoes above the ground....people do it in flower-pot type containers, plastic or rubber trash cans with holes drilled for drainage, wire cages filled with compost and mulch, bushel baskets, or even just potatoes laid on bare soil and then covered with compost and mulch. As the plants grow, you pile up more and more compost, soil or mulch around them. This is called "dirting" the potatoes and it increases your yield. If you have potato bugs in your area, nothing will keep them away from your plants, but they are easy to hand-pick and drown in a bucket of soapy water OR flick off the plant and squish under your shoe. Or, you can use the specific Bt (a bacteria) product that targets the Colorado Potato Beetle. I didn't have any Colorado Potato Beetles this year, and usually I do, so maybe they are not too bad this year. I'm old fashioned... OK and old. Mashed potatoes should be potatoes - mashed. I don't need the FAS (Fat American Syndrome) version of recipes where everything needs to have cheese and sugar on it to taste good. If you have good gravy (and it's unAmerican to not) then you don't even need the extra fat in the potatoes, since there's plenty of fat (and probably salt & pepper too) in the gravy. For potatoes by themselves, they can add a dab of butter and seasoning. Plain is often great by itself. Course good fries don't need ketchup either. The ones that have to FAS the taters could just as well use instants and save time. They're eating it for the cheese, sugar and other stuff, since apparently they don't like the taste of potatoes. I don't need FAS veggies, beverages, breads and the like either. Good food can stand on its own IMO. Pass the sugar bowl when old 300# Beulah needs her feet swelled up like soccer balls. But that's my opinion. A ricer is fine and a good tool for making lefse but mashed potatoes still need to be mashed with the zig-zag masher otherwise they resemble a big tater tot. I don't bother with it for mashed potatoes. Again, I want mashed potatoes, not riced potatoes, not beaten potatoes. If you're going to use a mixer to beat the taters to death and make them extra gummy, then serve boiled potatoes to me and I'll mash them with a fork! And for the people who think the mashed (riced, beat or instant) potatoes need to drip off the fork so they can say they're "creamy" UGH! Potatoes aren't supposed to drip. You make a well and fill it with gravy. We're not talking about potato soup. End of rant. The thing about starting potatoes in cold water as I understand is that the hot water sets almost a skin on the outside of the potato so the texture will be off. Can't prove it but I always found it easier to start cold and work up. I tried using hot tap water to start (to save energy) until I heard the thing to start cold. There might be something to it.

Angelaid-use the drippings from whatever meat you cooked to make brown gravy.If you don't have drippings use canned beef broth.I keep a couple of cans in the pantry at all times.Thicken with cornstarch,not flour,and the secret to brown gravy is strong left over coffee! About 1/2 cup to 2 cups other liquid (never use milk for brown gravy!).If you don't have leftover brewed coffee you can use a couple of Tbsps. dry instant coffee.I also keep that on hand just for gravy purposes.You can't taste the coffee at all and it makes the gravy nice and brown and flavorful.I made brown gravy for Thanksgiving like this because DGD requested brown gravy for her mashed potatoes and she loved it.If she will eat it,must be good cause she is a very picky eater.There is also a product called kitchen Bouquet that can be added to your liquid to make the gravy brown but it isn't something one normally has in the pantry.

I prefer russets for our mashed potatoes. Before I cook the potatoes, I heat some half & half in a small heavy saucepan with a clove of smashed garlic, a sprig of rosemary, a few whole black peppercorns and sometimes a small bay leaf. I keep this warm and let the aromatics infuse the half & half. Then I peel and quarter the potatoes - boil in salted water until tender. Drain and return to pan on low heat until moisture evaporates. Mash in lots of butter. Strain the half and half, add a bit at a time and mash until desired consistency is reached. We like some texture to ours and prefer them somewhat stiff.

I've had the Country Crock brand, and they are OK, but I prefer the Idaho brand potato buds! They seem fluffier...and they are less expensive.

Bought boxed potatoes for a family emergency. Had to feed a hungry crowd in a hurry. Found the Idaho homestyle tastes like potatoes! Who knew? I've been a fan ever since.

I also have been known to buy the Idaho loaded potatoes in the pouch, thin it and eat it as soup with a little chedder on top.

I've really taken a liken to "Idahoan" brand of dried potatoes. I also use less liquid and use half and half instead of milk. I especially like their "Baby Reds."

I buy WalMarts brand...the secret to making good instant potatoes is use all milk and a little more butter ...no water at all!

The Country Crock brand mashed is all we get up here. They are in the refrigerated section and very good! For real potatoes that is.
I just don't like instant mashed (dried) potatoes. They are cheaper though.

I am another fan of Idahoan boxed potates. They are really good, and I prefer them over the real thing.
You can add green veggies to them, or sub sour cream for some of the milk and it really adds a nice twist to them.
So easy and simple.

I sometimes use the boxed potatoe buds that are flavored in a pinch. Like CR said it makes a difference if you use whole mik and real butter.

Bob Evans are our favorite ready-made mashed. Costco had the best boxed reds but they don't have them anymore. They still have the Idahoan ones which I'm sure are very good but they also had an all-natural brand that was fantastic.

Another fan of Idahoan!

My sis-in-law turned me on to them last week. They are SO quick, SO easy, & SO delish! The whole family liked them, even the little grand kids. (And I've never been a big fan of "instant potatoes".... until now.) I used the microwave directions & added a bit of margarine. Mmmmmm mmmm!

Another good use for the boxed potatos. I use it to thicken my potato soup. Really works great! I imagine it could be used in a pinch to thicken about any cream type recipe.

Idahoans here too! I also use lots of butter and more milk than water and add more milk as needed.I also add heavy cream if I have it and sometimes sour cream.
When we had our little cafe a few years ago I always made mashed potatoes from scratch.One day I was low on potatoes and needed to make them for the dinner run and didn't have time to go to the store for more potatoes.I had a can of instants and about 4 potatoes,so I peeled and sliced them and cooked them as I would for mashed potatoes.When they were done I added butter and salt and pepper and blended them up in the cooking water with the hand mixer.They looked like potato soup at this point.Then I added the potato flakes until they were thick.Then I added enough milk to make them the right consistency.Everyone raved about the mashed potatoes.What had I done? They were "even better than the usual ones I always made".LOL To this day I still make them that way for my family and they all love them.When it's just DH and I and we are hungry for mashed potatoes I just get out the can of Idahoans.He has never liked instant potatoes but likes this brand.

Idahoans here too, but I will buy WalMart brand and use Sour Cream with the milk and real butter in those. Both are delicious and I have served them to guests that refuse to even consider boxed potatos and they never knew the difference. I know they would have said so if they noticed.

Watching your fat intake? I just tried my first mashed sweet potatoes called Simply Potatoes. You don't add anything and cook them in the micro dish they come in for 4 minutes. I choose them over regular whites because they contain a lot less saturated fat and plenty of flavor with brown sugar and Cinnamon already added.
