So disappointed in the History Channels.

I remember being so thrilled when our cable company started to carry the two History Channels several years ago. I loved all the shows reviewing US and world history. Something went terribly wrong this past few years, because now the channels are filled with shows about the swamp people, dumpster divers, pawn shops, UFOs, ice truckers, etc. I miss the history shows. On July 4th, they reran the story of the Revolutionary War all day, and I was in heaven. I recorded it and played it back while I worked on my long overdue needlework project for my son's friend. On Spike, they ran Band of Brothers at the same time. Ahhh, for the time that HISTORY channel meant something worth watching.

I couldn't agree more!! My boys who are in their late 20's were both raised watching the history channel. I think they learned more there, than in school. Both of them are upset at the changes.

I've written to the network asking what Pawn stars, Ice road truckers, etc... have to do with History. Never got a response. Same issues with HGTV and Food Network and how much they have changed.

I'm wondering why it's still called the History channel...it sure doesn't have much to do with history anymore.

Pickers was on the History Channel again tonight (Thurs) @ 10pm... probably rerun of Monday night's show. I watched with a particular eye towards how they treated the owners of the .... erm... I would call it "junk". I could not see any condescension there, iowagirl. Maybe your personal experience with pickers colors your view in general? I saw the owners really driving a hard bargain on several items. These 2 guys seem quite enthusiastic over their "finds" & they seem like they totally enjoy the interactions.

I'd like to reiterate, I said the quality of RH's pulls seemed fine. I don't like being told they're made in America and then find out they're made in Taiwan. Taiwan is not exactly synonymous with high quality products. Many of their products are made in Taiwan, but they source their parts from China (this happens in the US as well, so vigilance is necessary). The crux of my rant was that Rh used to be a store that you could count on for having products that were not made in China. I hate that a company known for that has changed their business model, yet hides behind the word "Imported" so that the change is not widely noted by their clients. The fact that they're hiding it means that they know that american consumers avoid goods made in countries known for shoddy products, so they don't display the country of origin as proudly as they used to. This wreaks of dishonesty to me. I don't care how good Rh's Quality Assurance is (I actually have no reason in recent years to believe that it's good at all). If they openly said, our products are mainly made in China now, but our QA is unfaltering, that would be one thing. But that's not what they do. Instead they make it very difficult for you to find where it comes from before purchasing. FYI, the reason that the pet food recall shocked so many pet owners was because some of the highest quality dog food was recalled. Owners thought that since they were paying a premium that they didn't have to worry about low quality food. They assumed a high level of Quality Assurance. Unfortunately, the pet food companies were sourcing grains from China. When grains are bought, the price increases if the crop has a high protein level. So some unscrupulous people in China, who only cared about their own bottom line, added melamine and cyanuric acid to their grains so that when they were tested for protein, it could cheat the test and have a high protein level. Unfortunately, melamine and cyanuric acid can be fatal to animals. In this case it was, to over 13000 pets that we know of and who knows how many pets lives were shortened. Now lets apply this case to hardware. Lets say, a company decides to degrade their hardware and move it from being made and sourced in the USA to being made in Taiwan. What happens if Taiwan can get really cheap nickel plating from China? What happens if the nickel plating from China has lead in it? What happens if said company was a highly regarded company that hasn't reduced any prices so their customers still think they're a high quality company. What if that leads their customers to assume (as did the pet owners) a high level of Quality Assurance? Then what if those customers buy the hardware, touch them every day, have their children touch them every day, lick their hands after touching, etc, etc, etc. It didn't take that long for the pets to develop issues that were noticed.....lead poisoning can be a slower process. Keeping both your consumers best interest and your bottom line in mind must be a difficult balancing act. It seems that Rh's greed has made them fall off the tightrope. I did say that MY White Chapel knobs and pulls were made in the USA. I didn't say all of White Chapel's hardware is made in the USA. However, NONE of them are made in China or Taiwan. They're made in the USA, Great Britain, France, etc. They search out artisans who take pride in their craft. Then they sell it at a reasonable price to consumers. We've watched the first two episodes, and will watch the remaining two episodes this week. Hubs is enjoying it much more than I am, but he is very into history and I'm not. But, I can enjoy a good history show as much as he does as long as it's done well. This one is driving me nuts because it seems like it's 7 minutes of program, then 5.5 minutes of commercials, then 7 minutes of program, then 5.5 minutes of commercials, etc., etc. There was a big faux pas in one of the episodes. There was a political banner -- I can't remember exactly what it said, but it was something like "Vote for so-and-so for President" -- and the name of the person was someone who didn't run for office until a later time.

It is not just the History Channels, most channels are disappointing. If one channel comes up with anything the rest all mimic it and then they mimic their own. I used to really like FoodNet and HGTV and several others. Now they have about 6formats, they have morphed into 24/7 coverage, using different names and star's.

I put all the blame on MTV with Real World, that brought reality tv to the masses, DH disagrees, says Survivor did it. We are left with crap, and talented actors are left with no jobs.

I dropped cable and satellite 10 years ago and don't regret it a bit. When I'm someplace with cable/satellite now I wonder why people are paying for that garbage but people pay it.

People wonder why these shows are on? Because people watch that crap! Just look at the posts on this forum! Did you watch Survivor? The Duggars are knocked up! Octoslut... Kate and 8 and all the rest. If people didn't watch it, it wouldn't be on, just like if people wouldn't buy from telemarketer scum, they wouldn't call and if people wouldn't send money, personal info and the like, we'd get no spam. People demand it and they get it.

I'll stick with ThisTV, MeTV and the various PBS and watch Highway Patrol, I Love Lucy, America's Test Kitchen and the rest and not pay for it nor support the trash TV.

I enjoyed the original History Channel, A&E, Discovery, HGTV, TVFN and a bunch of others but most all are in a contest to see who can produce the worst.

Your dollars speak. If everyone who truly was disappointed in cable/satellite would cancel it, even for a month or two and tell them why, there'd be a strong message sent to the producers. The networks usually get paid by the number of subscribers (and of course ad revenues) and if they take a hit on the subscriber numbers for a month or two, they'd investigate what happened. But would that happen? Nope. I see the types of people (with no life) who are glued to that TV day in and day out and the bulk of their conversation includes did you watch...

Same with the Syfy channel. Knew something was changing when they went from Scifi to Syfy. Wrestling on a scifi channel ?

When I've channel surfed as much as I can and still not found anything, I go online and find documentaries or history programs. Usually I have an old Masterpiece Theater series bookmarked and ready to watch the next episode when I get bored with TV. (just finishing up Duchess of Duke Street).

Another rant--MSNBC is supposedly a news channel, but on Friday night they start showing nothing but shows about prison life. All...weekend...long! Those shows and reruns are about all they show until 4:00 Monday morning when they rerun "Meet the Press" from Sunday morning. Hummph!

I agree with most of the replies here...and I am one who sits in my sewing room with the TV off 98% of the time....but, this week we got up-graded to HD...all kinds of re wiring and boxes and I can't help but wonder if TV as we have used it is going away. Networks must be really struggling to keep viewers...dumbing down to reach the lowest common denominator.... and if you have these new boxes, you never have to watch a commercial (so where are they going to get their $$$$ to pay those million $ faces? and million dollar ball players? Movies???? WOW...if they were making good ones (not many in my opinion) they are really cheap (and I pop my own salt free popcorn). We have only had it a few days, but I have seen 3 movies...without commercials; one very good but didn't make it at the box office and I am glad I spent the time to watch.

I do watch Tuesday nights....NCIS (Mark Harmon I have always loved) and NCISLA...beginning to love those beautiful faces....and the endings are always neat.

Somehow, I just can't get interested in TVLand....but I can get all sorts of BBC reruns that often never played in the US. Sort of like 'netflix'....instantly.

We appreciate our public library's vast and up-to-date collection of movie and British TV DVD's. We just completed Series One of "Monroe" with James Nesbitt.

We're taping and watching Series Five of "Doc Martin" and another PBS series tracing the history of the pre-Roman British town of Kibworth (very entertaining; not at all 'stuffy').

Aside from "Jeopardy" and the news (ABC and CNN), I can't think of any live programing that we watch. I rarely listen to commercial radio; prefer WBEZ. DH does listen to some sports-talk radio and will sometimes watch football and baseball -- only Chicago teams, so you know that's been infrequent of late! LOL.

I watch MSNBC for the prison shows........I love Nat Geo and the travel channel......great shows....

Maybe I am the only one that loves the Pawn shows.History was always my worst subject in school.To me it was so so boring.Now on snother hand Greg loves History and so does his family.But I learn another thing when I watch the Pawn shows and how much thing is worth.But the is just my thought and hope noone gets mad for me posting a reply.I too loves the Prison shows.Just a thought.LOve ya Judy in alabama

While I was in Vegas last year I visited the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop. Didn't see any of the regular cast and was told they only come in on filming days now. What disappointed me was seeing that a large portion of the store is commercialized, selling hats, cups, blankets, etc... promoting themselves. I knew there would be some items, but not as much as I saw. It definitely has become a tourist spot!
