Do Any of You Make Your Own Milkshakes or Blizzards?

I just mixed up a "Blizzard" for myself, chocolate malted milk with Blue Bell's Italian Cream Cake ice cream in it, plus milk. Sure tastes good after being out pulling weeds and then delivering veggies a couple of places. I will be glad when that cooler weather arrives this week. Anyone else enjoying a milkshake treat?

Oh, yes! I have a very old Hamilton Beach milkshake machine that has been in my family since I was a very, very small child (and I'm going to be 64 next month). One of hubs' and my favorite milkshakes is peanut butter, banana, marshmallow, and chocolate chip! (Start with French Vanilla ice cream, milk, a heaping helping of crunchy peanut butter, add some marshmallow cream and mini-chocolate chips. Yum!)

We also have a Blendtec, and many of the smoothies could qualify as a milkshake or "frosty." Of course, we don't use cow's milk or yogurt now -- we use almond milk, coconut milk, and yogurt and ice cream made from coconut milk.

I use 511 regularly, where I work we provide machinery that focuses on cleaning grains, plastic extrusions, reclaimed sheet rock, reclaimed glass etc. we separate unwanted fines, or unwanted particle sizes from many various products via screening, air aspiration as well as other methods. This brings me to my question about gritty mix, I just happened upon some poly beads about 3/16 diameter, could this be used as the grit fraction in gritty mix? What I mean by grit is the the granite, or the inert fraction of the mix, the beads seem to be nearly inert, I process all my pine bark through a machine called a reel eliminator, it has various sizes of screens so I can dictate what particle size I want by varying the screen size, I always look for the bags of pine bark mulch that looks some what composted, and separate that into the fines I want, typical what ever will go through a 3/8 screen. I processed 4ea. 2.5 cubic bags in 10 minutes last week, sure makes it easy compared to my screens at home. I am wanting to make up some gritty mix primarily for some citrus trees in my greenhouse, these polystyrene beads have become plentiful and don't weigh very much. Fruitcake candied fruit --- do you make your own.

I recently made fruitcake out of dried fruit too. I used some of our dried figs and dried apricots. I forgot one should use candied. I did use our candied citrus rind though. Other ingredients included currants, yellow raisins, cranberries, prunes, crushed hazelnuts, and marzipan paste. Brandy too of course. I sent a large fruitcake to a party and none came back, so I have to assume it was good (I know, I should have gone to the party...). I have a couple more soaking in the brandy cheesecloth, will taste them closer to Christmas. It smells so wonderful I really doubt it will taste bad.... I am posting to give the approximate recipe for the syrup and candied rind, since i have been using them quite a bit. To make the syrup and candied rind here is what I did. Mix equal parts sugar and water, heat until sugar is dissolved, and put the zested rinds of a basket full of minneolas after carefully washing them. Sorry, i did not measure, but you will see when enough is enough, when the mix turns a pretty orange color and you see lots or rind on the syrup. Boil for about 30 minutes and let the whole thing sit overnight or a few hours. Strain the rind and keep them in a separate container. The strained liquid should be orange and taste like minneolas. Or, any citrus that you want to preserve. My oldest (and most productive) trees are a giant Minneola, which is probably over 100 years old, and a not so large looking but incredibly prolific Meyers lemon tree. Both of them are super loaded (again). I am thinking about a similar Myers syrup and candied rind combination. I have used the syrup as a flavoring in citrus wine, to make the zucchini candies that were posted here, as a mixer with vodka, will use to soak the non- brandy cheesecake....and that will be it (not much left so it will be gone after that). The candied rind is used every time I make zucchini muffins, every time I make fig bread, and I used some in the fruitcake.

Thanks Chase, I'll sacrifice the shank slices I was going to use for soup and add them to the bones. I would think that three pounds of very meaty shank would be enough to add to six pounds of bones, is that OK? FOAS, in our main stream markets beef shank is $5.99 a pound so a real find at the Mexican supermarket for $2.69. Maybe I'll go back and look at their "soup bones" which were the odd shaped chunks. Our markets mark down meat too, but only by about 25%. The Mexican market is still my best choice. I looked at several videos, including a four part one from a cooking school with a huge kitchen and they all used clean bones, but I know that Chase has been making demi-glace for a long time and I trust her choices. In our house, there is no such thing as steak or roast bones with meat left on them and I think Max would know I was crazy if I asked him to give up chewing the bones. L

Cookie8, I almost always end up rewriting recipes, so I can make them in the order I need to. (Starting with preheat the oven to...) The way some recipes are written, reading ahead is necessary, although not always an option. I find it makes the instructions much longer, which makes the recipe look more intimidating. The truth is, if I can follow it easily to the letter, I find my results are more successful. Sometimes, I'll rewrite a recipe several times before it's where I need it to be. You didn't really ask, but I always get out every ingredient, bowl, spatula measuring cup/spoons and mixer that I'm going to need before I even start. I measure it all, and set everything on a tray, so all I have to do is mix everything together. (If a recipe has multiple parts, I set up different trays.) That way, when you read through the recipe, it's all set up and easy to ''check off'' while you're baking. I hope you try again. Determination is a fine quality to possess! I have an easy one bowl chocolate cake recipe, if you need something to go to, that's tasty, easy and worthy of a birthday cake. I usually make it with a Cinnamon Buttercream Icing, and get requests for it often. Just let me know if you'd like the recipe. Deanna, I always use the recipe on the back of a bar of Bakers Sweet German Chocolate. It's no secret, but rather more time consuming to make as a cake, than anything else. It's our favorite as the buttermilk always makes it so moist, and it's a cake that only gets better with time. We always make it the day before, so the flavors have time to meld. It's also fun to anticipate eating it, when it looks so good sitting under a glass cake cover.

We make malts...vanilla ice cream, chocolate malt powder, milk. Sometimes, a cap of vanilla. We like them nice and thick.

Vanilla Ice cream, chocolate syrup and milk in a blender, plus a good-sized spoonful of malt powder if I have it.

We have an old milkshake maker from a yard sale. I only use it a couple of times a year. I should dig it out. I usually freeze the metal cup part before using. I like vanilla with extra vanilla extract added in.

We love one that I make with our Waring blender. The Louisiana Sunset is a virgin version of a cocktail I had at the Holiday Inn revolving bar in New Orleans.

You will need to buy frozen Mai Tai mix concentrate and mix it with 3 cans of water. Canned sliced peaches. Vanilla ice cream.

Louisiana Sunset
10 slices of canned peaches
about 1 quart of vanilla ice cream
1 cup of the diluted Mai Tai mix

Whirl. Makes 2 shakes.

Since I dont like rootbeer I like to make coke floats. I like malts better than shakes though.

When I had my restaurant, my shakes were really popular & folks couldn't figure out what was 'different' about them., I made them like this:
Vanilla shake..2 dips vanilla ice cream, milk, vanilla syrup & 2tsp. of vanilla instant pudding.
Chocolate shake: 2 choc ice cream, milk, choc syrup & 2 tsp of Swiss Miss cocoa powder.
Strawberry shake: 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, strawberry syrup & 2 tsp of strawberry jam.

I used to make malts. Kept malt powder on hand for them.

Funny story. I took care of an old man named Ken for 8 years. He could be very difficult and was set in his ways. He used to send me to get milkshakes for him. He always said, "No malts! Milkshakes! I hate malts." So I would get a malt for me and a milkshake for him. One time when I was ordering them, I forgot and said, "Two strawberry malts." Then I realized what I had said....but I let it go at that. When I gave it to him, he said, "That is the best milkshake I have ever had." From there on out, I just ordered malts for him.
