I LOVE bing cherries! Man, there's a great buy at WalMart, today

They are the juicest most delicious bing cherries I have ever tasted in my life!

And they had them reduced today to $1.98 from $2.98.

Delicious! Not your usual size, but bigger and better :o)

Somehow this failed to capture the attention of my local Walmart. I'm hoping for a repeat of two years ago, when Walmart's cherry prices went steadily down until they were incredibly cheap. I froze a lot of them, and they were great to snack on. Love cherries!

Jannie and Nicki, I also have to say thanks. I too am far from perfect in that I've said things that I've regreted. And often. And I love my children so much that I rushed out of the house yesterday with tears in my eyes because an ambulance was at the end of our block and my two older girls were playing next door. Thanks goodness they were okay (an older neighbour had been hit by a car on his bike-he's fine), but I was weak-kneed and shaky. I have ALWAYS wanted to be a mom and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them- but sometimes I crack. I experienced the single mom lifestyle for four months. It took ages to sell our house and Jason had to start his new job before it sold. During the week it was just me doing everything for my three girls (ages at that time were 7, 4, and 6 months). Helping with homework, nursing my baby every few hours, trying to play with my pre-schooler, making meals, walking to the bus-stop, EVERYTHING and all of it on only a few hours of disjointed sleep. It was winter and the second night we started doing this the furnace died. It was -27 C that night, none of the so-called 24 hour emergency repair places would answer, and I was frantic. I piled every blanket on the older girls and tried to sleep with Evelyn on the couch while both her and I wore toques. I needed to sleep on the couch because I had the oven on full blast with the oven door open for warmth. It was a crappy night. They fixed it at 1pm the next day. I also dealt with a toilet that wouldn't flush (and I'm not handy) and a four hour power outage which again was when it was -20 something C and freaking cold in the house. I had no breaks (except for the weekend when Jason would come back home) and no time to do anything that I wanted that was just for me. It was stressful and horrible and eroded most of my patience in the first month. I yelled at the kids and occasionally screamed at them. I explained to them that it was just me and they needed to try to help me out by getting along. Well, they are after all kids and they weren't helpful for that long. I would have been absolutely horrified if anyone had heard me and judged my parenting and love for my children at one of the worst times in my parenting life. We have been all together for four months now and I still yell. I'm working on it. My middle girl is exceptionally spirited and we clash. I'm working on being a better mother everyday. I just hope that the next time someone overhears someone else saying something mean that maybe they will stop and think about all of the background story that may be present. There is often much more to the story than you may think. I hope that by sharing my story and point of view that I won't become a KT outcast because coming here is such a bright spot to my day. Wal-Mart Had Two Tomato Plants Today

Well, I hope that someone found it, bought it and took it home with them where it hopefully is someplace warm and frost-free/freeze-free. My big tomato plant is happily residing upstairs in the spare room right beside a south-facing window. I talk to it, thump its blossoms and check its soil moisture daily. A couple of lady bugs that were attempting to overwinter by hibernating in a corner of the spare room woke up in Tuesday's hot weather and now are climbing all over the plants in the room. They must think it is Spring. I do hope the folks at Home Depot in Gainesville brought in all those plants from the garden center or covered them up with a very heavy-duty frost blanket row cover because they had hundreds and hundreds of plants in stock over the weekend. If they had moved the plants, shelving racks and all, someplace indoors it would have filled up an entire 2-car garage with little room to spare, so it was a substantial number of plants. . And, those are just the vegetables, fruits (strawberry plants) and herbs. I'm not as worried about the shrubs and perennials they had on display. On Tuesday it hit 79 degrees at our Mesonet station and 77 degrees at our house, and it didn't just feel warm, it almost felt hot. That sort of weather could give a person planting fever. The bees and the wasps were swarming all day. This morning, though, reality returned and it was 26 degrees at our house and 23 degrees at our Mesonet station this morning around sunrise. Gainesville is at a higher elevation so they might have been slightly warmer, but probably not by much. Our weather is nuts. We've had more than the usual number of grass fires the last couple of days, which is par for the course as winter deepens and fine fuels like grasses become more cured following freezing weather. I'm surprised how many plants have popped up in stores across the state this past week. Even some cool-season plants can freeze or suffer damage with temperatures in the lower 20s, especially if they just came out of a climate-controlled greenhouse before they were shipped to the stores. I just don't understand why so many stores so far north have so many plants. Of course, the stores are happy to sell the plants. And, for the folks who buy those plants and put them into the ground too early, the stores then will happily sell them replacement plants. It is a great business model for the stores---the more plants they sell early which then freeze, the more plants they sell later to replace the frozen ones.

Gorgeous roses at Wal-Mart today!

The Wally World up here in Cornelia (25 miles north of Gainsville), the roses look awful. Went to Lowe's a 1/2 mile away and was VERY surprised at what they had. A LOT of David Austin roses that looked in great shape. The one's I remember were Linchfield Angel, Boscobil, Carding Mill and Lady of Shalott. There were more in there but I was in a big hurry. I might go back up there tomorrow morning and snag up another Carding Mill. One of my favorites.

Bings are my favorite!

I had some Rainier cherries yesterday from a local market that were fantastic. I usually don't buy Rainiers because they're so pricey.

I first had Rainier cherries when we bought some at the base off Mt. Rainier. I ate the 3lbs we bought on the way to our lodge. So good! Now each year I impatiently wait for them to show up at our Publix Supermarket. Usually they are $5.99 -$7.99 a container but this year they have been running $4.99 -$5.99 and have been Buy1 Get 1 the last 2 weeks. They do seem to be a bit smaller but still very flavorful. I don't care for Bing cherries but am so glad I tasted these out in Washington.

We were in Washington a few weeks ago and all the cherry trees were being picked. A friend of ours son owns a cherry orchard and let us go out there and pick them off the tree and we ate some right there....so delicious.

My friend gave us a bunch of cherries to take along with us on our trip. They didn't last long as we ate them all before we got to our next stop.

Last week, we had them at one of our local Grocery stores and boy did I stock up...I've been eating cherries like crazy and even gave the neighbor a big bag.....Gotta get em when they have them...Before we know it, they'll be gone!

LOL! It has been a good month for cherries. Have a 3-lb bag in our fridge.
We keep a bowl of them on the table for nibbling as we pass through the dining area.

This past week they were $1.88 at our Meijer. I love them too, have a bunch in my refrigerator!

I thought $2.98 was a good deal, so bought two pounds, and they just disappeared.....musta been that old woman that sneaks around.

They're cheap here too..around 2 or 3 $ a pound. Love them and miss them in the off season.

I adore bing cherries, and they are the best I have ever seen this year too. Bigger and more plentiful. It must have been our very wet winter that gave us a bumper crop.

At my local store, they had the dark red Bing and white Ranier cherries for $1.99 a pound. I got bags of both! If you want to pit them, here's an easy way: You need a plastic drinking straw, a long-neck (beer) bottle and some patience. Set the bottle in front of you, center a cherry on top, then the straw, and press down hard. The pit will be in the bottle and your cherry will be hollow.

This must be the year for cherries.I had some and I paid 5.95 a lb for them and I thought it was a treat.Tomorrow I"m headed for Walmart this should make me feel better.

Slim pickins today, but friend and I stopped and got them again today for $1.98. They had the rainier ones for $3.98.

Ours at Walmart were not reduced but I broke down and bought some anyway...I just love them. I ate nearly the whole package.

Our closest Walmart has not marked them down either. They are still $2.98. I bought some today and they are so good.

I have a bing cherry tree in my yard and the last year it made a crop of cherries was 2000 and it made cherries galore that year. I froze and canned I don't know how many quarts of cherries. I had purple fingers for a few days afterward, but it was worth it!!
