I just keep mine in a narrow drawer.

Sue

I use a couple of inexpensive plastic lazy susans in a cabinet. I like them because they work for any size container.

I don't have it set up yet but I recently bought a little organizer on clearance that is two-tiered. It's basically a wire frame holding two wire mesh baskets. The bottom will hold larger bottles and the top is a little less depth but stuff can stick up from it. I think it should work great. I've been cutting back on different types of spices lately. For instance, instead of garlic salt and garlic powder, I just buy powder and use chili powder more in place of cayenne. I make up my own cajun seasoning, BBQ rubs and such so I still need a variety of spices around but don't need them readily available.

I would like to have a drawer that could accommodate one of those sets of stacking trays and the bottles lay down in there. Maybe if I ever move...

I love mine from Olde Thompsons. I bought it at Costco for less than $30. It's almost the focal point of my kitchen. The jars are easily refilled. They come with labels.

I now have two revolving spice racks. LOVE them!

At first, I thought I divide cooking and baking spices... but that would leave stuff out on one rack, and not fill the other. Thus, I put my spices up alphabetically. Works GREAT. At this time I have only one empty jar, and ended up putting tooth picks in it. :)

PS, one of mine looks like this one, the other is very similar.

Enjoy my revolving spice rack!

Mine are on thingies that are stuck to the inside of the cupboard door. It is a strip with 4 clamps on each. Take your thumb and pointer finger and make a "C". They hold both the large and small sizes of spice containers. There are 4 strips on each door, so I have 32 spices stored there. I had them in my upstairs APT, and had to leave them there, so it took me a while to find them again when we moved down here

I also have a stainless revolving rack, but it's square and fits in a corner like Jodi's. It holds my most commonly used dried herbs and spices.

However, I have many jars of less commonly used products that, since the jars are so small, have been taking up a lot of space in the cabinet above.

Today, I bought on of those swivel racks that are being advertised on TV. Brought it home, loaded it up, and i like it. It does swivel as shown. Only caveat is that the plastic is much lighter (more fragile?) than I envisioned...so I wouldn't want to be yanking it.

Olde Thompson makes revolving spice racks too.

So DOTMOM where did you get yours?

Sooey, they had that Made for TV Swivel Rack at Bed Bath. I slipped it out of the box, and it is made of very flimsy plastic. The other one you linked looked much sturdier.

Jodiinsocal, I also had my eye on that Costco spice rack! BTW, I Iove your backsplash!

For the record, my spices are currently in a big basket. We recently re-did the kitchen, and haven't quite gotten things back together yet.

I store mine in various place. Why? because spices should never be stored in light or near heat sources like stoves, microwaves or even dishwashers. They need to be kept away from humidity and light.

I have a few on the inside door of my pantry, some sorted in small bins in the pantry and a few in the freezer or fridge.

So spice racks while pretty are not a great idea unless they are kept behind closed doors.

Hi Bengardening. The first set that I left on the cupboard doors upstairs, I had ordered out of a catalog, but I couldn't remember which one. I logged to several that I get regularly and couldn't find the spice holders. So I Googled spice racks and went through the places that came up and found them on a RV store on amazon Marketplace. Here is the email address.......www.thervstore.net
When I Ordered them they were $4.35 each. and were called Spice Rack Storage/Organizer

I use this spice rack in one cabinet closer to where I bake, I have a smaller cabinet with tiered racks for spices I use on or in the stove.

I happened to read this post earlier, then just a minute ago a commercial came on for the spice rack which I linked so thought I'd pass it along. Just another option.

Debi2006, Thanks for the link. That might be the perfect solution for one of my mother's cabinets where she currently has a lazy Susan.

I have a couple of the Magnetic Strip Spice Racks like in my below link. They look nice but aren't totally air tight. Still they are something a little diffferent and I've gotten compliments on them...

I have a long very narrow pullout three tiered spice shelf built in . It's conveniently located near the stove beside the lazy Susan cabinet where pots are kept.

I have six of the magnetic strip racks. They are on a wall in the hallway off the kitchen. It's dark and cool there, and it looks really good. All spices are in alphabetical order.

Hi Kids,

Thank you all for your contributions. It sounds like we have all thought about how to store and keep our spices. The links look interesting and have given me some good ideas as well as some much needed vision.

I am going to spend some part of my day today going through and weeding out my spices and herbs. I counted the bottles I have in my open, three shelf, Martha Steward type rack that sits out on my counter and I came up with 50...yes...50! Now I ask you, who needs 50 bottles of spices sitting on their counter, even if it is neat? I am sure that I have another 75 spread out in different locations in my kitchen. That is just crazy, a poor use of space as well as a great source of frustration.

I am rethinking this issue. I'm sure I don't need another spice rack, I just need to take out every bottle, evaluate each based on how often I use it, it's freshness and/or viability and then keep or pitch. It's not like I'm Emeril or Giada or even Rachel. How many spices do I really need?

*New rule* if I use it often, it gets a space on the rack. If it's a spice or herb that I do not reach for with great regularity, one that I would have longer than a year, needs to be in a dark location or if I have two of them, it goes into a Rubbermaid container which will be kept in the frig.

That is where I will start. It may end up that I do get some type of organizer that is kept inside a cooler, dark cabinet and it may even be a swivel store or the one from BB&B or the one that toni_ne posted. But for now, I will work with what I have and see where I end up.

You have all given me some good ideas and some much needed direction. Thank you all!

Toni, I just ordered the sliding drawer spice rack but it's on backorder. Do you like yours? I plan to keep it in the cabinet to replace the 3-tiered shelf I have most of the spices on now. I'm going to do as luckygardnr says and alphabetize them so I don't have to hunt every time I need one.

Project complete...for today. I went through everyting and found several duplicats. Question...is there a legal max on how many bottles of ground cloves one person can have and any one time, coz I think I may be over the legal limit. And how about Tarragon and Freeze dried chives? Both the tarragon and the chives are herbs I use a lot so they were each, a very good find. The ground cloves...the big bottles, not really.

I now have all of my herbs in a cabinet away from the light and the spices on the open shelf rack. I also have a few items back onto the lazy susan in another cabinet but they are easy to see and get to. I also have a Rubbermaid container in the freezer full of extra stuff that may be needed at some point but not any time soon. I tossed several old cans and a few bottles that I know were very, very old...like several years. When was the last time that a bottle of Saffron sold for .69*? that's old...

Now that I know what I have, I can see what I need. I will be getting an additonal rack of some type. It may well be the original pull out spice rack that was my original link or, it may be the swivel rack 'As seen on TV' I have 14 bottles of herbs that will fit such a rack very well.

So, that's it Kids. Thanks for your help, your links and your ideas. May we all enjoy the spice that life has to offer!
