Buffy is home!!!

I just got back from errands, and to my delight here comes Buffy running up to the car to greet me! I have never been so relieved. I can finally stop worrying about her little butt. Whew!

She is one happy camper I can tell, and I am so glad things are once again happy and back to normal in the hood.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers, she is back home with us once again.

Thank you, all who sent kind and healiing thoughts Buffie's way. She's home. She is eating and drinking and chasing Ikey, who was the most traumatized of us all, except for Buffie. Ikey just couldn't understand why she wasn't here and kept biting me (not a vicious skin-breaking bite), as if I could somehow return her if he reminded me enough.

Thank you all so much. I thought I would be gone by now, but Buffy does her usual morning run of the neighborhood then comes here to rest for the remainder of the day. She should be here soon. I hope she doesnt give me any trouble putting her in the cage. I will just have to be very diligent and careful. I am on pins and needles this morning just waiting to go. I will post when we get back. Trin

I think Trin can put two and two together. Buffy has/had fleas. She sleeps in Larry's house. She goes back in every night to her sleep area. New fleas try to bite her, heck they will bite on Larry too. They might be going down in numbers because of her treatment but I'm sure there are still some in there. This is a copy and paste. Maybe more info than needed. THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE FLEA The flea is a blood-feeding parasite which can be transferred from host to host. H owever, once a host is located, the flea prefers to remain on that host until it is dislodged or dies. Adult fleas have an exoskeleton. They do not have wings and their body is compressed laterally (vertically). Their eyes are very simple, and they have piercing, sucking mouthparts. Fleas as a group are cosmopolitan, and have been found everywhere in the world except the southern-polar cap. They are active and reproduce year-round (contrary to popular belief) but all life processes are slowed by various degrees of cold weather. In addition to fleas biting the pets (and often people), they can also cause several related medical problems. Flea Allergy; both dogs and cats can be allergic to certain toxins in the flea's saliva. This reaction is usually characterized by intense itching, chewing and scratching on their rear legs, tail, and upper back area. One flea bite can cause allergic reactions in sensitive animals for up to two weeks, regardless of whether a flea is still present. Any animal with hair loss should be seen by a veterinarian to determine the cause. (also known as flea bit dermatitis). Tape Worms: Tapeworms are intern parasites of both dogs and cats, for which the flea is the intermediate host. This means that the only infectious stage of the tapeworm is the larval stage inside the infected flea, i.e., fleas can be carriers of tapeworms. Tapeworms are usually identified by the owner as white worm segments, about the size of a grain of rice, that are stuck on the fur of the animal or that have dried up and fallen on bedding, etc. Pets can only become infected with tapeworms by chewing on and swallowing the worm segment. Once again, a veterinarian should be consulted for diagnosis and de-worming, but prevention of further tapeworm infection can only be accomplished by flea control. fleacycle.gif (3362 bytes) THE FOUR STAGES OF THE FLEA LIFE CYCLE FLEA EGGS * The flea egg represents approximately 34% of the total flea population at any given time. * They are smooth, oval, pearlescent, approximately 0.5 mm or 1/64 of an inch long, and are visible to the naked eye (a little smaller than a grain of sand). * They hatch in 1.5 to 6 days, depending on temperature and humidity. * Eggs are generally concentrated in area frequented by pets; i.e. bedding, dog houses, favorite resting area, etc., but can be deposited anywhere the pet has been. FLEA LARVAE * The larvae account for approximately for 57% of the flea population at any given time. * The larvae emerge from the egg using a special "egg-buster" spine on the head. The spine is lost during the first larval molt. * They are legless, whitish and maggot-like in appearance, having a single row of bristles on each side. They are about 3 mm long or 1/32 to 5/32 of an inch long, and are very active, using the bristles to move. * The larvae molt through three larval instars, lasting from 6-36 days, depending on temperature and humidity. Each instar is slightly longer than the last. * They are very susceptible to humidity, with low humidity being detrimental to the larval. * They feed primarily on adult flea excrement, which is more less dried blood from feeding on the host. This is often called "flea dirt", and is often mistaken for flea larvae or eggs. This is the dark specks that is seen on the animal or left behind where an infested animal lays. The larvae need this in order to survive. * Although very active, larvae do not range far from the area in which the larvae hatch. * Larvae are negatively phototactic, which means they avoid sunlight, hence they are more likely to be found in dark, shaded, or protected places. * Larvae will be mainly found in the pet's favorite resting areas. PUPA (COCOON) * Accounts for approximately 8% of the flea population. * Larvae form cocoons by secreting a stick substance and incorporating debris from surrounding areas for camouflage. * The cocoon provides a protective barrier which makes it resistant to chemicals and pesticides. * Pupa progress from larval form to a recognizable flea inside the cocoon. * Development takes place in about 7-10 days; however, the cocoon will lie dormant in the environment until the outside temperature and humidity is high enough, and it senses a certain degree of vibration. A passing host subjects enough vibration for the cocoon to hatch. * Cocoons may remain dormant over years if they are not stimulated to hatch. This accounts for the "VACATION SYNDROME", when people and pets return to the home the vibrations begin immediately which can start a massive wave of flea emergence. ADULT FLEAS * Adult fleas only account for approximately 1% of the total flea population. * Newly emerged fleas (from the cocoon) are often mistaken for "baby fleas" because they are very small, dark (almost black), and flat. These are merely new adults that have not yet taken a blood meal. * Adults are wingless and range from 1/32 to 1/8 of an inch in length. They are black to brownish-black in color. * After locating a host and feeding, the fleas "plump up" and turn a reddish-brown color, and are then recognized by most owner as a flea. * Adults are stimulated to emerge from cocoons by vibration and changes in temperature. Daily vacuuming is recommended, discarding the bag after each use. * Under normal circumstances the adults emerge from the cocoons in 7-10 days. * Visual and heat stimuli are primary modes that attract adult fleas to host; carbon dioxide causes random jumping and is a minor mode of host-seeking * Once they locate a host, fleas will feed, mate, lay eggs and spend over 90% of their lives on the host, unless dislodged. * After emerging from cocoons, adults can live up to two years without a blood meal if they have not yet fed; feeding on flea feces, fungus, and skin dander. * Once a blood meal is taken, the adults must feed at least every 4-6 hours. * Feeding periods are from 4-7 minutes in duration. * Egg production begins 2 days following the first blood meal, with the greatest number of eggs being produced on the sixth or seventh day after the first blood meal. * Average eggs laid per day is 31-46; average number in female lifetime is 300-800. * Average life span on host is about 12 days, with accounts of up to 113 days. If fleas are seen continuously on pet, this is evidence of re-infestation of new adults. * Fleas jump on a average of 9-15 inches high.

I want to add one additional comment. When you ask Larry if you can keep Buffy, let him know Buffy can visit anytime he wants to see her. It's hard to say how Larry feels about the dog without knowing him. He may be very attached but not have the time or money. My guess is though, based on the matted hair, that he is not a very responsible owner. If that is the case he will be more than willing to give up the dog. If he does give you the dog I would write up adoption papers and have him sign them. Just something that says he is relinqueshing his ownership to you. You can make something up to Larry about needing proof of ownership for pet insurance. Good luck and keep us informed. Donna P.S. You can also tell Larry when Buffy comes home that she will be needing follow up vet care. If Larry thinks the vet bills will start adding up he will be more willing to give Buffy to you.

We had a cat, years ago that was away for a couple of months. We have no idea where she was. When she came home she was skin and bones.

I do have to say, after Larry spent several hours here yesterday, which is HIGHLY unusual...I mentioned to him that I had some advantage that I was going to use on her but she took off before I could do so. He said, oh no, I am giving her pills from Doc Gill for arthritis, fleas, and other assorted things, that I can't remember right now....but I went personally up to the vet today, had them look her up by his name, address, and her name, and she has not been seen by them this year other than when I took her up there. I was scared of double dosing her, but Doc Gil is my vet too, and he has not seen her so Larry was fibbing. Why would he do this?

Argggg
She is home now so all of that really doesn't matter. Just had to vent.

I think Larry is very embarrassed that he hasn't been taking proper care of Buffy--maybe he feels he owes it to his mother to keep her? Perhaps he doesn't have the money to pay for animal care costs and just can't bring himself to admit it to you. Many people, especially men, are so proud; I do hope he's feeding her properly, though I'm sure you'd notice if he weren't. Once again, Trin, you are such a nice person to do the lion's share of work, etc. for Buffy.

Another prayer answered and thanks given. I think I would "beg" Larry to give me that dog if I were you. He knows you'd take much better care of Buffy than he does or can't do apparently. I don't care how much "pride" a person has, I can't tolerate lies and his lies to you really upset me. And how stupid does he think you are, knowing you use the same vet and could find out that information. Grrrrr

Thanks to everyone, really you are such a caring bunch when it comes to the furbabies. To answer the questions of a few, no Larry will not give her to me. I have asked.
You all probably know our saga well enough to know I would steal her if I had not been next door neighbors with Larry for the last 20+ years. I would never get away with it. NitaAZ was here a couple of weeks ago and got to meet the Buff in person. She greeted her as she got out of her truck. She is such a sweet pup.
For now, all I can do is keep her health up, Larry does feed her well, as she is a little tootsie roll. I don't have to worry about that. But there is so much more to taking care of an animal than just that.
I think that, yes, his pride is getting in the way of being a responsible owner. But so be it.
Buff can be here all day, and at his house all night.
That is normal for us here now, and it seems to be working ok. Not the perfect arrangement that my dogs have, spoiled rotten, but it is all I can do without crossing the line.

Thanks to all the KT aunties that care about Buff as much as I do.

Hugs

You have just made my day !! I am thrilled to know Buffy is home again. As for the vet, are you sure that is the only vet that Larry uses for Buffy? I use two vets for my critters. One for flea and tick control and rabies shots and another for more serious issues. But the 2nd vet has all the records for all our critters.

And I think that you should approach Larry with the idea of your adopting Buffy as your own dog. But let Larry know that he is welcome to visit with Buffy too.
That's how I ended up with my little "Scooter". They did actually come over to visit for a couple of weeks, but now nearly 2 years later, they don't even look this way. (And that is just fine with me)

Give Buffy a hug from me okay?

So Trin, are you going to give Buff the Advantage? I take it she still suffers from fleas, poor little girl.

I'm also assuming from all you said Buffy has no fenced yard front or back, is that right? When she's with you, do you keep her in your yard or are you concerned with your dogs and her fleas?

Just another concerned KT Auntie who wants to slap Larry, but who would also like to give you and Buffy hugs...you're both troopers! :)

Yep, I am sure that Larry only uses one vet. He is really the only one in the area. And when talking to him yesterday, he specifically said that Doc Gill was treating her. Doc Gill is my vet also. So he just flat lied to me. The least of my worries now really as Buffy is home safe.
She is still crawling with fleas, and I have got to be certain that his house is also. I will be giving her the dose of Advantage tomorrow. We were so happy to see each other today, that that was the last thing on my mind.
Now I do have to add that Larry pays a service to come and mow his yard now at the cost of around $75.00 a pop. So why he cannot spend this cash on his dog is beyond me. I just shake my head at some people's priorities. Oh well.
She has no fenced yard as his house, yet does at mine. He let's her out about 6am when he leaves for work, and lets her back in around 6pm when he gets home. She is here during that period, and stays in our yard. I still cannot let her inside due to the flea issue, but I keep an eye on her all day, and make sure she always has fresh cool water to drink and treats during the day.
I just know that she is home and I will sleep well tonite.

I think Larry has some control issue problems. He must know how much you care for Buffy. Some people are like if I can't have her no one else will. He just seems like a selfish individual. I am sooooo glad that you love Buffy more than you care about who the owner is. In Buffys' heart you are really her owner. And we all know that.

Blessings to you!!!

Seems to me with all the $ you are spending for flea control, vet bills, worry, etc. for Buffy ~ well why not put the ball back in his court and just outright ask him how much money he wants for the dog because you're prepared to buy it. Let's see what kind of excuse he can come up with.

I'm really happy Buffy is safe for now. I think Larry is a terrible owner. I realize this is a touchy situation because he is your neighbor. It is considered animal abuse the way he is taking care of her. I would contact animal control and ask them for advice. I would ask Larry why he is lying to you about her vet visits. It is against the law to just let her out for the day without being in a fenced yard. She may be safe this time but sooner or later something will happen to her.
Trin, I'm not blaming you in any way, you have been Buffy's angel. But if you love her you are going to have to take control.

Glad your little bouncing buddy is home. I hate to see any dog outside in this heat of 102. My dogs can't handle being outside for longer than 30 minutes at a time and their ready to come in and cool off under the ceiling fan with the A/C. They drink tons of water too.
