I just got back from Buffy's owners house.....

Dh and I went together. Buffs owner had just come in from work and we heard him calling her.

I asked him if he had recieved my note about Buff, and he said yes, he was sorry about not responding, but had already been aware of her situation and had been too busy to come over.

He also told me that Doc Gill (my vet) had seen her just last week and was tending to her issues. NOT. Sorry but I had them look up a record on her today. There was none.

I have his address and his name, so I am sad that he lied to me about that today. But besides that, he was very friendly and understanding and most of all grateful. I could just tell. I think of all he was just embarassed the we were coming forward to take her care. I told him I had two girlfriends that were going to help on the bill and not to worry. By the look on his face at that very moment he was ok with what I have done. I told him she would be home around 5pm tomorrow. I gave him a hug before I left.

So we have dodged a bullet today, and thank you all for your help concern and offers. This just means so much to me.

I really think Larry knew she was sick, but just could not afford the treatment. As I left, I told him I would keep Buff by day and he could have her by night. I am not sure he heard me, but he will know soon.

I think she is probably my dog now, which is just fine with both DH and me.

Oh, thank goodness, that is GOOD NEWS!! I thought of poor Buffy off and on today and worried that he might be ugly about everything and demand to get her back. I wish everyone would be as kind as you and your DH, the world would be a much better place.

I'm so happy that it went that well.

If money is the main reason why he hadn't taken her to the vet, it would be very humiliating to him to have to acknowledge that.

I'm so glad that it has worked out this well. Glad your husband went with you. It is always better to have 2 people.

I had visions of you having a lot of trouble, so I am much relieved as well.

Hi Johnny, sorry it took me a while to get back to you. I didn't catch Daniel's talk about the rabbits (was sitting in another building listening to a different topic) but I did see a harepen that was sitting next to the summer Raken house (it is covered with an opaque cover and is much, much larger than the ones they use in the winter.) In the winter they use hoophouses that have the translucent covers so the hens will get as much daylight as possible, and the sun will warm up the house too. I think you are talking about the portable harepen that he has made to go on pasture?? I seem to have overheard that these are a work in progress so I don't know how well it works. It looks like a regular rabbit house but instead of a traditional floor it has long slats that may have been 2x2s that only ran in one direction. The distance beween the slats was about 2 or 3 inches. I am assuming that this would give the rabbits access to the grass without as great of a risk of them digging out the bottom. Since I really didn't know what I was looking at this is the best description I can give you. I don't know much about rabbits or their housing in general. I haven't gotten my film back yet (someday I will get a digital.......) so I don't have pictures. I may have a picture of it since I took 2 rolls while I was there, I will post it here if I do have one of the harepen. HTH, let me know if you were wanting to know more about the raken house where he has the rabbits above the chickens. I got a better look inside one of those and I know I have pictures of that. Skagit and Roberta- I went ahead and made a virtual copy of a Plamondon hoophouse (with a few small modifications that were suggested by people on a different list). It is light enough for me to move by myself, even though it has gotten tougher since I mounted the nest boxes in the back. I did attach a rope to both the front and the back which makes it easier to get it just where you want it, especially if you live in an area that is not flat and smooth and have a constant need to dodge obstacles. The bottoms of mine are 2x4s so it is plenty heavy enough to not flip but the top is all cattle panels, plastic and wire so it is very light. Mine is only about 9x10x6.5 tall.

These trees are the most obvious remnant of the pioneer community of Fruita, which was settled in 1880. Oh Trin, you do have a wonderfully soft heart! I'm so glad you took the little girl in--what did the vet say about your situation with Larry? Are you afraid of Larry? It almost sounds like it. Either that or you are not one to step on others' toes if you can help it. I would keep it fairly short and sweet with Larry, and chances are he won't even care. He may not be as grateful as he should be, but I don't see why he would be angry. And it sounds as if your vet is as sweet as you are, keeping the cost down. Thank you so much for taking care of sweet little Buffy!

This is great news! Buffy will be so much happier. My I make a suggestion? Don't take her to his house. If he wants her overnight he can come get her! I am almost willing to bet that he won't come. Wishing Buffy the best life- you are the best Trin!

That is great news. When Buffy comes "home" to your house tell Larry that it would be better if she could stay with you while she recovers. Don't bring her back to him at all. If time passes and Larry doesn't ask for her back ask him if you can adopt Buffy. Tell him you are very attached to the dog and would love to keep her. I bet he will say yes.

I am so glad it's going this well. You must have had a gentle, and non threatening approach for him to come around like this. I hope she gets to stay with you full time. Btw, those pics of Buffy are quite heart warming.

Thank you for posting this update, Trin. Like several others, I was worried about how your neighbor would react.

I believe you handled the situation beautifully. By not confronting, and by voicing all your concern for Buffy, he absolutely had no reason to get angry or ugly.

Buffy is going to be thrilled with the new arrangements!

Oh, I'm so glad all went well. Yes, it fits that Larry just couldn't afford her care and you handled the situation, taking into account his feelings, so very well. I wonder if he can afford the dog food? Bless you again for taking such good care of her! Will you post a pic when she comes home? What a little doll-baby!

I'm so happy with the way this turned out, even if she spends nights with him. I'm so relieved that Buffy is getting healthy and will feel better soon, thanks to you and the other kind hearted people that helped you take on the cost. :)

I am happy also about the results. He seems like a nice guy, just doesn't know or can't afford treatment. A lot of people think, feed um, water um and let them run. They require a lot more than that.

He may be just short on cash and short on time to take care of her during the day. Lots of people are hurting right now. It is so great that you were able to keep it friendly.

Trin, I didn't open your previous posts because I wasn't up to the potential heartbreak, but I read this and one previous post yesterday and I want say this- "you are good people and you will be rewarded". That's what my aunt always said to us and it always pertained to helping an animal. So I say it to you. Good luck with Buffy.

I want to add one additional comment.
When you ask Larry if you can keep Buffy, let him know Buffy can visit anytime he wants to see her. It's hard to say how Larry feels about the dog without knowing him. He may be very attached but not have the time or money. My guess is though, based on the matted hair, that he is not a very responsible owner. If that is the case he will be more than willing to give up the dog.
If he does give you the dog I would write up adoption papers and have him sign them. Just something that says he is relinqueshing his ownership to you. You can make something up to Larry about needing proof of ownership for pet insurance.

P.S. You can also tell Larry when Buffy comes home that she will be needing follow up vet care. If Larry thinks the vet bills will start adding up he will be more willing to give Buffy to you.
