What would you use to get rid of this annoying car problem?

In the console area between the front seats, in addition to a pullout coin tray and another pullout large enough for a cellphone or GPS or iPod is an open tray space where people could put their cell in while it's plugged in and charging. I tend to put my extra sunglasses there (although there's an overhead sunglass/garage door opener space, too), and because it's a smooth plastic, sometimes the sunglasses rattle.

(The cupholders are at the other end of the console, near my elbow.)

I want to place a piece of some material down in that space to end this rattling as well as to protect whatever is in that space so the tray surface and the item itself don't get scratched.

Any idea what to look for? I think I need just a small piece of something, which I'd cut to space -- but what? And it must be black (I was thinking of normal rubbery kitchen cabinet liner, but I don't think I've ever seen that in black).
