I use the soft spongy waffle-like shelf liner for problems like that. It's easy to cut and cheap to buy. I have it in my ashtrays so that coins don't make noise.

I use the same thing as Jodi and get it at my supermarket. I also use it to line some of my kitchen drawers to keep things from sliding around.

Same as above, the rubber waffle like non-skid rubber shelving liner.

Rubberized shelf liner works great - use it in my console, too.

Except for those foamed peanuts, I save packing materials from online orders. If you have some, either bubble wrapping sheets or foam sheets would work well in lining the compartment area.

As for the packing peanut materials, I give them to the UPS store for recycling.

Can you keep a soft eyeglass case in there and slip the sunglasses into it to keep the sunglasses from rattling around?

I have an eyeglass case that's made of leather...it wouldn't make any rattling noise and would protect your sunglasses.

I use tool drawer liners from Harbor Freight. It comes in black. It has a sticky surface to keep the tools from moving around when you close the drawer. I also use it on my console to keep my cell phone from siding off when I brake or turn corners...

In the past I bought some foam stuff at Hobby Lobby. It came in lots of colors. Had black and white, and cut it to size to put behind the light switch plates and the electric outlets on the outside walls.

Of course, you can buy pre cut stuff for that, but I am cheap. LOL

You might take a look around at HL. That stuff came in sheets of about an eight by ten size.

Oh wow, I'm sold on the Drop Stop. I'm going to be doing some Christmas shopping early! And then I'm going out to my car with a flashlight and my super, super long tweezers to retrieve whats already fallen through the cracks.

I have used the waffle liner stuff, which I usually pick up at Big lots they have it in all colors, and also the sheets of foam board the real thin ones you can even get it at walmart in the crafts area.
I need that drop stop so bad I have had that happen with my keys and like to never got them out of there.
I was at Sears last weekend and in the tool dept they had a big display in the middle of the aisle of items that were really inexpensive and one of the items was an extend-able magnet, looked like a long pointer thing that pulls out and has a magnet on the tip. That thing definitely is in my tool box now and it was only a buck or so.

Try some of those thin foam sheets you can get at the Dollar tree. They are for crafts, but I line boxes an other things to keep them softer or to keep from rattling.

They do make the shelf liner in black. I have bought it and like it much better than the white.

Those Drop Stops are a lifesaver... LITERALLY! Can't tell you how many times they saved me from taking my eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel.

You could make a liner out of black felt. A little trial and error with scissors and sewing machine could produce a custom fit liner. If you are good at "hat blocking" and have a piece of real felt, a piece could be blocked to shape to fit the cavity. Trim the excess after blocking.

I was going to suggest felt.

Or possibly flannelette?

You need something that's not going to scratch your glasses ... or make them foggy from where they jiggled on the car material while travelling.

Maybe sew a bag of fairly firm cloth-like material into which you can drop your glasses?
