I just made some about a week ago. They are soooo good.
you use the rind of a watermelon, or any melon or pumpkin either. You can pickle them like a dill pickle or make them sweet. I let my neighbor have 2 jars and she loved them! here is what the sweet (cooked) ones look like

I would think about size and colors and patterns. I've ended up with a lot of large hosta and a couple of giants, which I don't need in pots. Almost all my hosta were green with a contrasting margin. When you have too many with, say, white margins, or green with yellow margins, they just run together. I have Paradigm and Brother Stephan. I have Pride and Joy and Lakeside Shore Master. I have Crusader and Wide Brim. Each of those is very similar to the other. I'm just saying that June is a beautiful hosta, but maybe at this point you don't need Halcyon, Touch of Class AND June. They are all similar colors and sizes. You seem to have a good mix right now. Just think about what you already have when choosing your next ones. And by the way, I love Francee. She grows beautifully, looks good until fall and doesn't mind the heat. Paul made a list of favorite hosta last year. We all voted on our favorites and he did the calculations. Then there's the hosta of the year, which comes from surveys of the members of the hosta assn. Then there is hosta of the year from the hosta growers Assn. Hostas Direct has both lists on their site: http://www.hostasdirect.com/hosta-info/american-hosta-society-ratings. I'm not suggesting you buy from hostasdirect. I'm just pointing to a place to see the lists easily. Also, someone posted a list from Papou who is a now deceased hosta grower of some renown. He did a list of what every newbie should get. Carol, Down here I can see flea beetle damage on radishes and beets as early as February of most years, and they will hit the tomato plants, eggplants and pepper plants as soon as they are transplanted into the ground. This year, I think the flea beetles have hit them in the greenhouse and when I have the plants outside sitting in full sun and full wind. (The greenhouse can protect them too much once the shadecloth is on it.) Something else is eating big holes in the leaves of everything I planted. It looks like grasshopper damage but I've only seen a small number of hoppers. Whatever is doing the damage, I don't see that insect in the garden during the day when I am out there. Maybe it is the June bugs? Who knows? Seems like it will be a bad bug year for sure. After saying I hadn't seen any aphids, they showed up on the Piricicaba broccoli around Wednesday or Thursday. By Saturday, the lady bugs had shown up, so I am sure the lady bugs will take care of the aphids. We have a lot of crickets, and before the weather turned cooler, they were making that cricker/hopper/locust humming racket in the woods at night that we hear most of the summer. I was SO not ready to have all that to listen to. Once the temps dropped, they got quieter again. Susan, We have about a half-billion June bugs and a billion crane flies. They are just driving me insane. Every time we open a door they fly in, etc., etc. and they are all over the yard, garden, greenhouse, garden shed, garage, etc. I've never seen so many craneflies or June bugs. I'll be glad when they are gone. We're also seeing tons of ticks and mosquitoes. I haven't seen any cicada killers yet, but lots and lots of spiders are out building webs, and I noticed spittlebugs on the grasses in the pastures this weekend. The fire ants are appearing in epic numbers for this early in the year. Every day I am seeing more and more butterflies and moths. I've been watching for luna moths because I usually see them in April, but haven't seen any yet. Carol, Our hummingbird population quadrupled over the weekend, making me think the first ones I saw were the early birds (pun intended) and that the main migration is now occurring. If you move your hummingbird feeders to a new location every spring, you'll quickly learn which birds are new to your place and which ones were there last year. The returnees from last year inevitably go to the spot where the feeders were last year even if there are no feeders in that spot this year. That's how I can tell if any are "returnees". I have seen a few green lacewings and a ton of tiny bees and parasitic wasps. The bird population is huge this year, and I hope they all stay busy eating the bad bugs. Dawn

I don't chop it and put it into anything...to me it has too strong a clove flavor for anything but to serve on a relish tray...with olives, dill pickles and celery spears and perhaps pickled crab apples. My grandmother made the BEST watermelon rind pickles...but of course never wrote the recipe down. Linda C

My husband (tho we dont' live 2gether) has all GE monogram appliances except for his Miele built in espresso unit. His kitchen is very nice - 6 burner stove, griddle, side oven, etc. BUT HE DOESN'T COOK.... He feels I should have all my appliances match in my new home. I feel function is more important, as I do cook. I do use my kitchen and liking my appliances is more important than how they "look" to visitors. But, I would match my range/stove to my hood. Only because they seem like 1 appliance. So far I have picked a Bosch slide in range, hood custom from cabinet maker, Samsung cabinet depth frig, Sharp mw drawer, and I'm leaning towards a Kitchenaid dw. A Bosch dw would match nice, but since it's smaller than the KA, I prefer the KA. My frig and stove are on the same wall. mw on island, and diswasher on another wall. While I would like the handles to be pretty similar or if KA had thier new dw without a handle (that would be perfect - they don't) but, I don't think it's gonna look "god awful" not being matchy-matchy. I'm heading to Lowes today, just to compare before I finalize on my dw. All other appliances are purchased, and I can't return them. I'm hoping guests look more at my cabinets and counters than my appliances. Good Luck in your choices

My grandmother and mom and aunt loved to make watermelon pickles. They used a sweet recipe. When we were kids, Mom would serve us watermelons galore over a few days and admonish us to save the rinds for pickeling.

They pickled them as sweet watermelon pickles, and I loved my aunt's recipe best because they were a deep pink. She would throw a handful of cinnamon red hot candies into the brew as they cooked.

here are the recipes I used.

DILL WATERMELON/OKRA/CUCUMBER PICKLES

Pack quart jars with washed watermelon/okra/cucumbers - whatever. To each jar add:

2 tsp. dill seed
1 small clove garlic
1/8-1/4 tsp. dried crushed red pepper
1 slice onion

In a large pot, bring the following to a boil:
1 quart white vinegar
2 quarts water
1/2 cup salt

Pour into jars. Seal.

The liquid will fill (after packing with produce and other ingredients) about 3 or 4 quart jars. And they are ready to eat in about 3 days. I use the same recipe for my dill pickles and my pickled watermelon rind

Mom made the sweet ones with the cinnamon candies. They were deep red and ohmygosh wonderful!!

I haven't had them since my mother died 20 years ago.

My Mom used to make sweet waternelon pickles. They came out transparent and extremely sticky, but I loved the taste!

The recipe Joann posted is mine. Dill is the only way I like them. I can't keep my family in watermelon pickles because they love them so much. And the same recipe with okra. Those just fly off the shelf. I do not like sweet watermelon pickles. I think it has something to do with the fact that they are cooked.

Most of the time I hear of it being the rind, but there was an interesting show on PBS called Schmeckfest and the gal on there was talking about her watermelon pickles. Those were made from the flesh of the melon. She entered them in the State Fair and was irate because she was disqualified because the "standard" was to use the rind, but hers was an old German recipe and she was insulted. To top it off, she read an article in the paper a few weeks after the Fair and the judge(s) interviewed were asked what's the weirdest thing they ever ate while judging, and the response was some horrendous slimy red watermelon pickle! She was livid. LOL

They sound very interesting! Esp the addition of the cinnamon candies! But a canner I am not, so I will have to use my imaginary tastebuds.
