Yes, that was dumb.

I've taken that hike up to Vernal Falls. It's slippery and scary at certain points. How stupid and tragic of them to climb over. My heart goes out to their children.

Some people shouldn't be parents. They wanted their kids to climb out and they'd be dead as well.

Too bad your don't have to have a normal IQ in order to be parents.

I could see 1 person doing it but 3?? Talk about following lemmings off a cliff.

A Park Ranger said they had double the usual rainfall this year. So it was ceretainly dangerous/different than usual. Somehow I don't blame the people themselves.

Jannie, they climbed over the safety guardrail. That is where they are to blame. They were stupid.

I haven't seen anything about children but it sounds like two of them were foolish and the third was trying to help after the first two fell in. No matter the reason it is tragic, I just don't understand why people do this type of thing, same with those that try to reach a wild animal over the zoo barriers. I guess I'm a coward!

Stupid is as stupid does, and it's sad someone tried to help and also died.

Stupid and arrogant, as well. "The guard rails are for those other people, not for me. I'll just go out a little way... they must put them back MUCH farther than necessary. Surely I won't get hurt! I'm not going to fall!"

It's tragic their children were there.

i guess I'm hard-hearted. I don't feel sorry for those that choose to take risks, like Mt climbers. rock climbers, illegal drag racers and people who choose to go hiking in dangerous countries. what gets me is they expect other people to risk their lives to rescue them when they get into trouble. My sympathies go to the family and friends left behind. These people in Yosemite paid the price for a second of stupidity.

It goes without saying that it's sad for the kids. But it's also sad that the water gets polluted with corpses of the selfish. No sympathy for them. Ma Nature, keep on thinnin'.

And as I said in another thread, I don't think it's a spur of the moment stupidity, it's more appropriately human greed and selfishness, wanting more than what they're entitled.

When people try to cross flooded roads, can see the current, don't know the depth but their greed says "let's go for it, we'll call AAA if we get stuck", I don't feel sorry for them when they wash away.

And it's time to quit letting medical treatment be covered by insurance when people go jogging, or sit in open baseball parks in 115ð heat indexes and overheat, if they should even be treated at all. Definitely should be on the low-priority list. And the ones who put their kids out to play soccer, baseball, football, well, any demanding sport in these temps should be jailed and the kids taken away for child abuse. It's time people realize that insuring stupidity and greed is ensuring stupidity and greed.

In a perfect world, everyone uses good judgment all the time. None of us is perfect, right? Gotta say I'd be terrified to work for you, cynic.

What a stupid, avoidable tragedy!! I am so sorry they didn't use common sense! We have seen this type of idiocy at the Grand Canyon and on top of the mountains in Arizona. I don't understand why some people have to push the limits!

One of them went over trying to save the other two. I know if it had been a loved one, I probably would have done the same. It's so sad that it ended up killing him.

How easy it is to judge from the comfort of our living rooms against people we've never met but these kids could have easily been your own children. It just takes one moment in a lapse of judgement to have tragic results, and I can guarantee we've all made a bad or reckless decision before. Even the smartest, most intelligent, best-raised people make seriously poor decisions at some point in their life, except they're usually lucky enough to survive them. I think the world would be a better place with a little more compassion.

No~ it isn't easy to judge from here. Having said that, many many people were yelling at them to get back and they CHOSE to ignore them. It was completely avoidable and now their families suffer.
NO~ these would never have been one of my children. They have made very poor choices at one time or another, but never anything that would take their life or their friends life..
I am with cynic, so very tired of people risking safety through stupidy and expecting someone to "save" them.

Well from the news story posted it sounds like there was only one stupid selfish person. The 2nd one tried to rescue the 1st and the 3rd tried to rescue the first 2. The last 2 were at least acting selfishly. Don't know if you could consider them stupid as I wasn't there to see the condition to know if they could have had a chance to save anyone or not. Sad story. Even though dumb, I certainly don't think death was justified in any case.

Could they hear the people yelling at them? Are they fluent in English? I don't know the answer to these questions.

Stupid is as stupid does. I feel for the families but if these people spoke English and were able to read signs, did they think it was good idea to ignore them?

A similar thing happened to one of my co-workers three weeks ago. He and his pregnant wife were on vacation in Kuaui when he decided to jump off a 20 foot waterfall called Kipu Falls. He made the jump, surfaced and then went under. He was found an hour later at the bottom of the pond.

He office down the hall is empty and his unborn child will never know him. So sad.

It it tragic. Unfortunately, they improved the gene pool the hard way.

There were a dozen of them, they went out to get a group photo. When they were returning (jumping from rock to rock) one slipped into the water, then another....the third was the photographer, he was trying to save the others. Silly and foolish move? You bet, but who knows, when I was twenty something I might have done it too.

Is it silliness or just youth not recognizing their own mortality? Whatever the reason, their parents and loved ones now have an emptiness in their hearts and souls that will never be filled.

The first two climbed over the barrier, trying to get a better photo. and the third tried to help. Tragic. Yes they were stupid.

No different then fools who climb over railings at the zoo to pet the animals.
