Another Spider Bite....Geeze.

I've been nursing what I believe to be a spider bite for almost a week. First days it felt like a pain in my head...tooth ache (where there is no tooth)and an stiff neck like ache on the right side of my neck. I had crazy worries/feelings about something "growing' between my scalp and skull...painful at times. So a few days ago, I found a pin-prick like spot in my eyebrow which has now developed into a small wound that looks like I have been hit with a board on the outer edge of my eyebrow and, of course itching and annoying irritation, and hurting. And, spreading. The last time I had a spider bite...a Hobo we believe, I was weeks getting over the cellulitis in my lower leg and more weeks having the hole filled in at a special 'wound clinic'. We just came back from weeks on the coast....just like last time. Think I must stay away from there!

Make sure it wasn't a recluse that bit you. If it's possible get to the Dr right now!

there are some types of bugs and flies that will actually put an egg under the skin and it will begin to grow and the small hole thing is how it breathes, if it starts to swell up get it checked asap, mosquitoes can actually carry them too.Google botfly larvae

Scary, you can wait til spring before repotting. That is unless of course you have to water on a daily basis..then I'd go againt the 'rules' and repot. BTW, in some of my plant books it states, spiders can be repotted any time of yr. I'm trying to keep my spiders in water growing small too..The kitchen faces north which means very little light. On either side of the window are 6 shelves connected to the cabinets. So, I found the only plants that grow in this window are spiders and pothos. The thing is they thrive and stay small..Toni

I remember seeing this post or one similar to it a few months ago, and I did a bit of research, but I think that the African Spider Plant is NOT the one that most of us have grown as house plants at some point, and I also think that the number of them that would have to be planted in/around/among the canes of the rose would be an impossible and improbable task. The facts are correct (thank you Henry), but the implementation isn't actually going to do any of us much good.... IF I remember correctly, and now (I know I should have done it before I started this post) I'm going to trot off and do that research again.... Susan

Spider mites are barely visible with the naked eye. Usually the back of the leaves on affected plants will feel gritty. By the time the webs appear you have a full blown case. Check the back of the leaves with a magnifying glass. I've had good results with spraying the plants with insecticidal soap, such as Safer's or using Trounce, also made by Safer's. Yes, spider mites will kill your plant if you let them. Here's a link to the houseplant forum. There are very some knowledgeable people there who will surely give you good advice. Jumping spiders galore!

Have no idea regarding the watch dog tendencies of jumping spiders. They seem fairly fearless, however. I'm not real sure if I would want to 'employ' a pack of them, however. ;-) Is it possible for you to install some weather stripping or other device to seal your home from critters? Something else that I will highly recommend is aerosol boric acid applied as a barrier (nearly invisible) across the threshold. You could spray it in any location where those spiders lurk (not near food prep areas). It is not a chemical product, but plain boric acid and a bit of sticker delivered in aerosol form. It works GREAT! I had regular visitors coming in from my garage (spiders and house centipedes) until I began using that stuff across the threshold. Let me see if I can find the name of it......hold on. Okay, it's called PermaDust. I can't suggest where you might be able to find it locally, but you could order it on line. Of course, boric acid dust is readily found in the market place. Here is a link that might be useful:

I think you should see a doctor. I've been bit by spiders and had an itchy red welt... but never the symptoms you are describing.

Yes the brown recluse bite I had when I was in college was very painful and it was quite evident it was a spider bite and the center of it started to literally rot, sure sign of a recluse bite. Still have the scar and the deep indention on my ankle.

OOPS....Turned out to be ....uuuggh....Shingles, and very close to my eye. So much for MY diagnose, and glad to have seen the MD. Funny (not) a good friend left on a caravan trip to the east coast last month, and her parting conversation with me was...go get that shot, you just never know. Well, you don't! and here I am with (boo-hoo) Shingles!

Did the doctor explain to you what "shingles is? Its not someting you "catch" since you already have it and most of the time, it is held in remission. I Advise you to read up on shingles to better understand it. Stress can bring on an outbreak.
