Photographer's Question

My eldest nephew has just achieved his Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts. There are a few of us who have decided to go in together on a gift for him. We're thinking of a nice, lens interchangeable, digital camera.

Can you describe your own camera, what you like about it, it's features, etc.? We want something "lasting" so he can enjoy it for a few years.

Do you mean a DSLR? I love my newest camera, which I got in 2005 and have no desire to replace. But it doesn't have interchangeable lenses.

I can't help you with the camera, but if you would also like to have him receive congratulatory letters from the White House and other government officials - see the link below. I imagine he would love to have a signed letter from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger too!

Not sure what setting you have but shooting in auto mode no camera can give you good results in freezing motion. You need to be able to set shutter speed, I find, a good start is to set it about 1/1000 of a second or higher. This robin was set at 1/2000 of a second,..but, the higher the shutter speed, the higher the ISO, which makes a picture more grainy, ..go as low as you can, especially for sitting birds.

Y'all need to read that blog. :) Addie was buried in June. No excuse for a shallow grave, except the fact that she was buried in a hurry in the wee hours, and her husband and/or attending physician did not follow legal procedures of the time, requiring a burial permit. One of the reasons for these "legal procedures" was to achieve uniformity in burial practices. The fact that there was no burial permit for Addie was a big red flag. The fact that her doctor LIED (on the death certificate) and said there *was* a burial permit was another big red flag. She allegedly died of diphtheria, but that was just a bad lie. There were no cases of diphtheria in Lake Mills in 1901, or so said Addie's doctor in his report to the state four months after Addie's death. I've read the newspapers for that time period, and I've also read the reports from the state board of health. No diphtheria anywhere NEAR Addie's city. I've done my research. :) Addie did not die of diphtheria. If you want to learn why that's so, read the link below. It is a fascinating story, and I have learned a WHOLE lot, due in large part to the kindness of others, and their love of the truth. Again, I too am not a lawyer (although I've never lost a court case I've handled either!), but when I was in photography quite heavily was when the copyright law hoopla started gaining momentum. Generally the person taking the photo has the rights to it unless doing it for someone else, and the subject has rights to their image and likeness, however if the photo was taken in public, the subject loses a lot of control of their image. Then there's another monkey wrench thrown in. If it's being used for profit, that brings in other issues. You can't for instance take a picture of a celebrity using a Blackberry and use it for commercial purposes such as a television ad or something, nor suggest any type of endorsement. He may well own the rights to the photo since he probably had it taken, paid someone to do it, then the photographer relinquishes rights to it in most cases since s/he is under the employment of the subject. It's always best to get a model release whether you need one or not. That may be all you'd need but you should of course seek advice on it. FWIW when I was doing photography I had a clause in my contract that I could keep and use the photos for promotional purposes.

That was a few years back and the reds have improved. I seem to prefer the ones that veer toward what I call "wine" and is possibly your "purplish." I always think Lyon's Red Rocket is toward a cinnamon but maybe brick is more accurate. However back then, no they weren't red :). If you stuck them under the right light you could pretend but take them into the real world and, no. I dropped that fight but thought a big box of crayons would be a start since price was frequently quoted as a barrier to any suggestion. There are also very nice cards made for quilters although we wouldn't need the majority of them. I ran around my yard with them trying to put together planters one year. There are many well known systems, including an official one for flowers (somebody probably knows it), but they are prohibitively expensive. All we wanted was a clue - most of us knew that flower tinted like the bottom of the swimming pool wasn't really that color. Now to try to stop Houzz from emailing me every time someone responds to something! Diana

Becoming an Eagle Scout is certainly a difficult task, so congratulations!

Canon is offering the digital D50 model for around $700.
For the bucks you get a great camera and two lens; a short 30-70 and a great 70-300. Image Stabilization is part of the deal. I have one and I love love love it!
The price might seem a little steep but it's a real camera, one that will last him a long long time.

Eagle Scouts are heros in my book.
It takes a lot of work to achieve that status!

Thanks Lori - that's what we're looking for. Since there are several of us - the price is a little more flexible.

Thank you for the compliments. We're proud of him. I had already written our senator and got a flag flown over the capital in his honor. And I have contacted a distant cousin who is a NASCAR driver (up for Rookie of the Year) and he's going to autograph a t-shirt to be presented to him at his award ceremony.

I have the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. LOVE it. It's now about $600.00 or so, I think that includes the kit lens.

They also have user forums, you can read what the actual owners think of them.

I don't think you could go wrong with either the Nikon or Canon choice.

Congrats on your Eagle Scout! I had a friend who had all three of her boys make that rank.
