Does anyone know what this is caused by/

ants, maybe?

I have perfectily conical depressions along the foundation of our house.

this is making me nervous, lol DH not worried. Just 3 on the east side,

but on the south side, there are 4 that are about 18 inches apart.

Thanks for taking a look. I was thinking that some kind of fruit tree would be the obvious answer because there are very few native trees here in the plains of eastern Colorado, but many planted ornamental apple, plum, cherry, pear trees. I will look up the sand cherry. I was also wondering if it was missing some leaves. When I feel the stem now, there is only one rough spot (leaf scar?) at each node so I think it is alternate. It seems like so few trees are in opposite arrangement and the ones that are often have very distinctive leaves like maples? When leaves are compound that makes things more confusing. Your sister's furniture is absolutely lovely! I'll bet she's thrilled. I'd say the dates you're getting here sound about right, 1920-1930ish. It does have an Art Nouveau flair. Those aren't your beans. I planted mine from seeds too. They start out that way then those little pieces that look like beans will fall off and more leaves will grow. Those are just the remnants of the seeds. It takes a while before you see anything. Keep watching them! They are growing nicely.

I do a lot of hiking and we see similar depressions in the ground along the trails.

I was told there is a small beetle or bug of some sort that lies in wait at the bottom for something to tumble in for dinner. Because the sides are so steep and loose, it's difficult for the guest to escape.

Not sure if it's what you have but worth a thought. Apparently the bug is a bit of a biter but you can take a spoon and try to scoop up some soil at the very bottom to see if anything is there.

dirt, soft sides, and maybe 3 inches across.

I also think it is from an ant lion (aka doodle bug). They eat ants and other small insects that fall into their trap.

When growing up the older kids taught us how to take a pine straw or small twig and lightly stir around the sandy side of the depression.

As the sand fell the doodle bug thought an ant had fallen in and it would come to the surface, and could be caught with a spoon. We would put them in little hinged BAYER asprin boxes and later release them back into the sand. It was fun to watch thwm bury back into the sand.

I recall that one had to chant while stirring "Doodle bug, doodle bug you house is on fire...Better come save your children."

I once showed my GD how to do this. She was just as impressed as I had been as a child.

Spiders make holes like that too. Also wasps.

Do what we do, but be prepared to run just in case. lol. Take a hose and slowly fill it with water and whatever is in there will come up.

Doodle bug doodle bug,come out of your hole.Bring your bread and butter cause your house is on fire! LOL Ugly little critters but fun to watch them back up and dig that hole!
Could be one of any of the other insects mentioned.I'd just dig down with a spoon and see what you get.

I remember Doodlebugs, but I never knew they could fly. As kids we just liked to see them roll themselves up into a little ball if we tickled them with a straw or piece of grass.

The little chant that was mentioned, we used that for the lady bugs:

"Ladybug, lady bug, fly away home. Your house is on fire and your children will burn!"

How did we ever manage to have so much fun without all those electronic toys kids have now?

I think toads, frogs too like to bury themselves. They might make a kind of round hole maybe?

The 'doodlebugs' are the larval stage. The adults, which DO fly, look like damsel flies or similar insects.
