Vanilla Bean Vine does anyone know about it?
Comments (2)The plant is Vanilla planifolia, which is an orchid, not a bean. It is native to rainforest areas of Mexico, which will give you an idea of its cultural requirements. It is tropical, not subtropical, so growing it outdoors successfully will depend on where in Florida you live. It is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on trees, not in soil. I suggest you tie it in close contact to a tree with fishing line. Don't bother with soil. Spray it with water daily unless there is rain. Don't worry if you miss watering sometimes. Spray it occasionally with a soluble plant food diluted to half strength. Eventually, it should start to grow and send out roots which will cling tightly to the tree. During the cool part of winter, if it gets cool, don't water. If there is a cold spell, cover it with a blanket. It may not bloom for a couple of years or more while getting established. The vanilla "beans" are the seed pods which follow the flowers. Jim...See MoreWhat type of bean seed do I have?
Comments (1)There are so many kinds of beans that it is really difficult to do this based on so little. Here is a link to the Seed Savers Exchange, online seen catalog (beans section). There's a chance you might see them there, or something like it. Some years ago a Gardenweb member posted a similar question about a family heirloom bean from his family. It had brown seed. He wondered if it might not be the same as our family heirloom bean: Tennessee Cutshort. Eventually he sent me some seed. I thought, "This is like looking for a pin in a haystack!" But, when the seed arrived it looked just like Tennessee Cutshort. When I grew it out it seemed the same in every way! So, it is possible, sometimes, to find an ID. Comments (1)Vanilla orchid is not a rampant grower, so it may just be "resting." The salesman was correct in his advice. I once propped a cutting against a Golden Rain tree and it eventually took root on the trunk and bloomed. The flowers only last a day, as I recall. It's more a conversation piece than a spectacular bloomer. Patience!...See MoreDoes anyone here know what these are? pics
Comments (23)I remember Doodlebugs, but I never knew they could fly. As kids we just liked to see them roll themselves up into a little ball if we tickled them with a straw or piece of grass. The little chant that was mentioned, we used that for the lady bugs: "Ladybug, lady bug, fly away home. Your house is on fire and your children will burn!" How did we ever manage to have so much fun without all those electronic toys kids have now? Sue...See Moreallaboutthepaws
