Around here somoetimes they are soft cover or paper backs. The drinks are usually pop, however, my son calls them sodee. I don't know about going to town. I guess I never go to a big enough town. It would depend where you are I think.

I grew up in Milwaukee where drinking fountains were called "bubblers". This was because at one time the downtown area had granite fountains that constantly bubbled the water up through the center.

I always order a coke when going out whether it is a coke or not.

I had a boss that called air....r. As in I went to the YMCA and dove into the pool and came up for r.

Some people call a couch a sofa. Couch for me.

If you call for your relative to give you a ride to town, you ask "Will you come Pick me up?"

When you explain directions we say(or may say) "it is over thata ways a mite."

When you are surprised by something someone says, We say "Well, I'll be!" meaning isn't that something else!

We don't tote anything, just carry..Carry the box, groceries, etc. Tote the groceries may mean you are trying to light them and take a toke. We slur our words that toke and tote may come out the same. We don't believe smoking your groceries would be very satisfiying.(;-)

"He's got a kink in his tail." Means he is out of sorts, or being moody, gruff, or having a po'ed day.

Here in this part of Oklahoma and I had never heard this before, some people call the storm cellar "the Cave".

Uptown/downtown. Hadn't really thought about this one before as my home town actually has both. Half the "business and commercial" area was built on a bluff overlooking the "downtown" area. Hence you could drive down the bluff from uptown to downtown. So, I guess when we used either phrase it was actually specific to whether you were uptown or downtown.

My DD got a kick out of the Texans that said "Ya'll" when she was there last month.

So, lydia. My inlaws said youse guys. What do they say in the Midwest?

In New Jersey, we go "down the shore" (to the beach/ocean)

We go out for "a slice" (pizza)

We order "soda" by the brand "Diet Coke"

In the area I grew up in, we ordered pizza by the tray ("I'd like to order 2 trays of pizza.") I don't know of anywhere else that they do it like that (and that may not be common in that area anymore either).

Some people used to call green peppers 'mangoes' in that area. I have some old local cookbooks from that area that call for 'mangoes' and 'oleo' (margarine).

One thing I say and it isn't regional, but from Tennessee Ernie Ford. When my knee or hip is bothering me, I say....I got a hitch in my get-a-long. That usually gets me a funny look. LOL Dottie

Pop vs: Soda. I grew up in Washington/Oregon where everyone says "pop," and since moving to California 25 years ago I still can't bring myself to say "soda." How's that for ingrained??

Several years ago, a friend of mine from Chicago had just moved to MS and I asked her if she wanted to go with me on our lunch hour to pick up a tag for my car. She had no clue what I was talking about. She had always called it license plate.

Any carbonated drink is a Coke. You just specify what kind. Dr. Pepper, etc She calls it pop.

I call a it a buggy. She calls it a cart.

Ya'll is used all the time here.

We may tote, carry or cart things. A buggy is for a baby or a horse to pull, not to put your groceries in, that is a shopping cart. Some still call green peppers, mangoes. I don't. Rummage sales covers all, barn, yard, tag, garages and you name it. We have license plates. In the midwest we say you, not youse. I don't say oleo. I am in Indiana and born and raised here.

Here near Boston (and in Ohio, where I was born), it's paperbacks. Pocketbooks are purses, only in Ohio, "pocketbook" is what your great-grandmother says, while it's the generally-accepted term in Boston.

"Aunt" and "ant" are pronounced differently.

They'd know what you meant if you said soda (but not pop), but the correct term is "tonic". "What kind of tonic do you want?" "Diet Coke."

You don't turn right on Commonwealth Avenue, you bang a right on Comm Ave.

A milkshake has no ice cream in it - it's just flavored milk. If you want what's called a milkshake elsewhere, order a frappe.

Downtown and uptown aren't the relevant terms here - it's inbound (towards Boston) and outbound (away from Boston).

A traffic circle is a rotary. Driving them is sport here.

I've already contributed more than enough on the Hot Topics forum, but I'm wondering if anyone here has heard this expression: "One's dumber than the next!" It's something DH's father used to say about their housemaids or his secretaries. (He was from New York State.)

I like my Scots grandmother's saying: "It's an ill wind that blows nobody's britches dry."

I notice in online discussions that someone will say something like "My car needs washed."

We never say that here. It would be either "My car needs to be washed," or "My car needs washing."

We say (Minnesota): Do you want to come with? or I'm going with. Meaning: Do you want to come with me/us, or I'm going with you/them.

I grew up 10 miles north of Milwaukee and "bubblers" was THE name, like litereader said. When we moved to FL, the kid I asked looked at me like I was an idiot when I wanted to know where the bubbler was. "Water fountain" is so mundane! lol

Any carbonated drink is a soda. A Coke is a Coke. A Sprite is a Sprite. Tonic is what you mix with vodka or gin. lol

DH, from Chicago, says all the time, "It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick." Never heard that one till I met him.

When I was 9 and we moved from Mass to Ill there was a lot of new words I had to learn.
Called a coke, a soda - in Ill they called it a pop.
Mass = cellar, Ill = basement.
Mass = Aunt, Ill = Ant
Mass = urp, Ill= upchuck

There are lots more but I just can't think of them all right now.

My town also had a downtown and uptown and northside and West Racine, which is also a shopping district.

We say soda and bubbler.

Many Iowans say "Do you want to come with?". Some here call sofas "davenports". My mom always used that term. The strangest to me is that Iowans call multi level parking garages "ramps". I couldn't figure out what they were talking about when I first moved here.

We say "soft drink" instead of pop or soda. A sofa is often a "chesterfield" - In some places they call it a "settle" and I've also heard "davenport".

Fish is cod. All other types of fish are referred to by its actual name - salmon, halibut, etc.. If you order fish and chips, you will get cod.

The "basement' is the cellar.

As for directions, you go "this way" or "that way", "turn left" or "turn right". And then there is the typical Newfoundland way to give directions - "Do you know where such-and-such used to be? Well, you go past that and ....."

In South Dakota, we called them davenports. In Iowa, we called them couches. In Las Vegas, we call them sofas.

In South Dakota, the bridge in our town was called a viaduct. I thought that was really weird.

There is just a downtown in Las Vegas. There is no uptown.

In California it's a freeway. In other regions it's a turnpike.

When someone posted the term congealed salad it almost brought up my gag reflex. It's Jello or gelatin salad around here.

A soda or pop is ordered by the brand name around here. Years ago a soda was a drink that had ice cream in it as in strawberry soda or chocolate soda.

Oh my, there are some things on here that just made me realize that there ARE some words and phrases that are different.

Well, I am not your relative buy I just realized I do that. I didn't realize it until you posted. LOL

How about chester drawers...That is what I have always said, or at least it comes out that way. What I mean is chest of drawers. I don't know where I learned that from, (grandmother?) but I say it. (:-)

When you have shelled the peas and are looking for the bad peas or junk in the shelled peas, my grandmother would always say, "need to eye the peas."

Everything is put...put your shoes on, put the cloth back, put up the canning jars, when you get mad you can say "I wouldn't put up with his tomfoolery." LOL

I was raised by my grandmother so alot of my language is from her. She was born in 1888, and her language was different than now a days. I have been told I talk like an old timer when I was a younger woman. It must be because I was raised by my DGM.
