Thank you all so much for your thoughts. You have given me a lot of ideas. I am a plant lover (funny how you see so few indoor plants in decor magazines these days). You can see I have a couple of cuttings rooting out on the sill. So I probably will end up with lots of plants in the window (easy to water them there!). For now, I will probably leave it, or maybe hang some object above the window. I still have to tile the floor and backsplash and put up the doors (sigh -- wish it was done already). So I guess window treatments are not my first priority. It's just so much more fun to think about pretty fabrics than grout and hinges. Besides, I am slowly collecting pretty accessories for my kitchen -- it helps me remember that it will be done someday. So I'm still pondering the idea of a simple window treatment. I think fabric and rugs add important softness to a kitchen. kmcg85, if you read this, could you please tell me the source for the last two fabrics you posted (the reddish ones). Thanks!

I could really make some jokes about that statement but its funny enough "as is". I am sure your choice of the word naked was intended to be a little funny but if you combine it with the first part of your statement... hillarious. Igloo, I dunno you are gonna have to whip out those fancy photoshopping skills to try to convince me becuase right now I am siding with abbycat, which is what I had in mind at the point I started the thread (roman blinds wood style). mlraff... that is a nice idea, I've bought window coverings at potterybarn before and they are "OK" and cost more than something OK should - too bad I can't get a sample since they state they don't have those in the store. The dining window is 58.5" wide so I'd have a .25" gap on either side, assuming they were 58" wide (the pottery barn stuff I bought before was slightly smaller than stated). Abbycat do you know who makes woven wood in the roman shade style? It looks like these bali ones are: Bali deluxe woven wood. But its too bad they don't have many wood choices in that line that would work in the space. These might work, but it might be too much texture: and maybe this but it probably draws too much attention to itself. Even though I am not so wild about the wood choices for the Bali shades I do love this bound edge color for the dining space:

Les - Thanks so much! I like the idea of a wood valance to hide the shade. So the valance should be wide enough to cover the top piece of trip completely? I'm going to discuss this with my husband as I think this will give it a clean look. Thanks for the link Chris. Julie, thanks for the tip, I think it would be so much easier to just take the cranks off or look for a smaller size. They are a pain! springroz - I'm in between the solar shade and the cellular shade. I like the insulation the cellular will give as well. We got all of our romans from jcpenneys and they were very reasonable during one of their big sales. Annie - are your shades bamboo? I would love to see a pic. Jeannie, you place sounds lovely, do you have any previous pics to share? Yaya - your link takes me to JCp's blinds but not sure which one you were referring to. cliffandjoann - thanks for the pics. I love the way the solars let the view shine through. Do you have direct sun through that window? I'm wondering if they do a good job reducing the glare? Thanks everyone! Right now, I'm leaning towards a wood or fabric valance and roll-up solars or the cellular shades. I know the cellulars are great for insulating, how about the solars, any insulating benefits? Also, do the solars reduce the glare or do you think I'll still be squinting once the sun hits this window?

I generally prefer minimal or no window coverings (except in the bedroom and my woman cave), but I live close to a street and neighbors, so I have flat panels on the lower half of my double living room windows. I love them! This is my second set. Someone might come up with a more elegant solution, but I wanted to be able to open mine on sunny days so I have them hanging from rings sewn into each upper corner, and when I open them I let them hang in folds on the outside (since there are 2 windows in each unit there is an outside.) I made mine, and this set I smartened up and lined them (just attaching the lining at the top.) The sun really fades! Kathy
