I just had a second injection into a knee that I have had trouble with since 2006 when I had the arthroscope surgery and have been checking on a knee replacement since that time. My MD sent me to a Rheumatologist (?) for another reason and he asked if I had tried a "gel" injection. Having had the steroid injections without success, I agreed....and the Gel is working like I never could have imagined. Immediately as well. I get 3 in total (did the other knee yesterday) and am walking without pain. I hope no one has horrible stories about this. I checked the med news places and have found none....it is working and I can walk and stand much more easily. (YAY) These injections along with the treatment for my chronic anemia and I am feeling like an (almost) new person!

Great news! My husband is an avid tennis player and high school tennis coach. His knees are shot. I will have to mention this to him. Thanks and congrats!

Cats and puppies are far more likely to experience adverse reactions to flea products. Years ago it was recommended that only flea powders be used and that they be used with caution and washed away once they did the job. Even flea baths were deemed too harsh. Another thing many people don't realize is that many heartworm tablets also have flea preventative. So some people who use both may be unknowingly overdosing their pets. Ask if you pet is already receiving flea protection through their heart worm meds. Flea and heart worm preventatives are a wonderful science for animals that need them. If you live in a mosquito invested area heartworm meds are a must. But too many pets are on heart worm meds year round when they might only need them at specific times of the year,when traveling or never depending on where they live. The same can be said for flea medications. Once the fleas and eggs have been dealt with then enough of the treatments already. There are some environments where regular flea maintenance may be required but not every household pet needs to be dosed with pesticide every month. I have two large dogs. Both had fleas just once in their lives. The Lab as a puppy and the Rot when she first came to us in her later life because she was often at the dog park. These dogs have "natural" flea prevention. I leave their coats alone except for brushing. All the dogs I know that have skin and flea problems are constantly being bathed as if they were children. They are dogs. They have natural skin oils that need not be washed away. A muddy dog can be simply hosed down if needed but the full bath thing with shampoo, conditioner and cologne etc. is way over the top for many dogs. My dogs get a bath maybe twice a year or if they roll in something really disgusting. They don't smell, they don't have skin problems and they don't have fleas. They are brushed and their ears are cleaned. Their nails are kept short, one by nature and one who needs regular clipping and dremeling. Please take a look at what you are doing to your pets. If there is a medical reason for doing something like extra bathing then fine. But don't just do things because every says so. I am extremely lucky to have an honest vet who doesn't push unnecessary things but even some practices out there are really pushing products for profit these days. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Lynn, thank you for presenting the other side. I know that if my dr decided on a concierge practice I would most likely follow her. I have to say that the practice she is with is large, maybe 10 physicians, but I think it is very well run and that makes a big difference. They do schedule patients every 15 min but I never feel she is giving me the bum's rush. Likewise, I've never waited more than 15 minutes to get in. If I call with a sudden ailment, like a UTI for example, I can usually get in that afternoon or the next day to see a PA, which is fine with me. Concierge practices have always existed for the wealthy....i.e...celebrities aren't showing up at the dr's office, presenting their insurance card, and taking a seat in the waiting room. Like most things that start off for the wealthy only, this idea is now trickling down to the masses. I think it's good for the dr and patient and harkens back to the old days when physicians came to your home, which I remember! Unfortunately, many people just cannot afford this type of service.

It may be identity theft but it could also be the doctor's office not entering the correct insurance number. Several insurance companies are interconnected and only use the insurance number to find addresses in their systems. If the insurance number keyed to your name and address the computer would fill in the blanks using your information. I had this happen a couple of years ago. Insurance system at that time read the card but the receptionist had to rekey the number to verify it. Both names and numbers were on the card but she picked up my husband's number. I had a hard time correcting.

Eld, my mom was 81 when she was diagnosed with CCL. She was on various chemo treatments for two years until it ceased working. She started regular blood transfusions but it was like trying to bail out a fast-filling leaky boat so her doctor suggested radiation. At that point, she decided she'd suffered enough, refused further treatment and died three weeks later. Leukemia patients are usually immune-suppressed--however my mom's doctor never put any restrictions on her activities. Without having access to his records, it's really impossible to know what's going on.

Is that the injection made from cocks comb? A friend of mine had thad done a couple of years ago and has had no problems since.I think the success of the treatment depends on what kind of problem you have with the knee.

That is wonderful to know. I have very bad knees and recently voluntarily quit my pain meds. I will check into it first chance I get. Thanks for the info.

The one I am talking about is called Synvisc.Used for arthritis in the knees.

If you look at "Gel Injections for joint knee pain" at livestrong.com ...an interesting article. The name of the product is hyaluronic acid.

And the good news is that hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our bodies and is a good thing, it naturally is helpful in our joints.Hyaluronan is also a major component of skin, where it is involved in tissue repair.

My Rheumatologist has suggested it to me when I have really bad flare up but so far I have not had to have any.

My husband really needs to have them for his knees they are shot.

I wonder if they use it for other joints. I don't see why not, but I'll have to look it up. My knees are not great, but a bigger problem is one of my sacroiliac joints. I can't tolerate cortisone.

I had the Synvic injections in both knees. The first was the end of Thanksgiving, the other was done the end of Feb. Each was a series of three. I was told, if it worked, it would probably last for 6 months. Maybe longer. I found the injections themselves very painful, but afterwards, ok. Be sure to ICE, ice ice ice! I am walking much better, with much less pain that I was before. I am really hoping that it lasts longer than six months, because I am a HUGE baby about needles, and must be laying down for anything to do with needles (not including sewing or knitting!)

I have had them a couple of different times in each knee and they did not help me one bit. I have since then had one total knee replacement and need it in the other one.

Synvisc has really helped my knee. I got the series of 3 about 5 years ago and usually only need to go back for 1 shot every couple of years. As soon as that knee gets down to bone-on-bone, I will get a knee replacement.

Goodness...guess I am late to the party. This was such a 'new to me' idea....had no inkling that it had been around for years. I have "wowed" my family today walking without my walker. Not a whole lot, but much more than the former few steps. I just hope that it lasts long enough for me to get some weight off of these joints as immobility and weight loss has been a losing battle. It really is "odd" that the ortho guy only wanted to give me steriods, so I quit going there.

I had the Synvisc injections in '99 in my bone-on-bone knee. I had a few months semi relief, but my knee was in such bad shape, nothing short of a replacement (which I had in Oct. '99) would really fix it. I've known several people who had good results, though, so it's certainly worth trying it.

You can get the hyaluronic capsules to take at a health food store. It sure has helped my hubby Ivan's bone on bone shoulder a lot. Our surgeon was happy to hear that the pills were working but told us he could give it in shot form if needed. Ivan was getting the cortisone injections but they just didn't last. Hubby's range of motion is really great now and no pain. The capsules will take about two weeks or so to start noticing any improvement, but give them a try. We get them for our son-in-law and he has noticed a big improvement in his knees too.
