Good thoughts for my niece's mastectomies, please

My twin's daughter, Barbara, is having a double mastectomy on Tues. the 15th at Scott & White hospital in Temple. She as well as Neva's other 2 daughters and I have had regular mammograms, and thank goodness Barbara's cancer was found early. She's opting to have both breasts removed because of her mom's experience - Neva had a mastectomy in March of '95 and in May a malignancy was found in the other breast.

I know she'd appreciate your prayers and good wishes. I'll print everything out for her and take it to her - I'll be with her all next week. Thanks to you wonderful KTers!

I hope all goes well with her...and she heals quickly.

I think she chose the best way to go.

I know a woman who is in a similar situation. Her daughter was murdered by her estranged husband who then committed suicide. The children were in the house at the time and were about ages 8 and 12. They have a grandmother who is probably in her late 70's and an aunt who is single, by choice, and who has no desire to rear children. They have hired a nanny, are sending them to summer camp, and will send them to boarding school when old enough to go. Frankly, I think it would have been better if they had been put up for adoption as they have to know they are not wanted. They've really had quite enough trauma in their young lives.

Better to have this mixed news that at least he's alive and well. But his walkabout continues with something less than concern for the feelings of his family. The guy decided to take an extreme step and leave with an untidy departure. From the family's perspective, the ongoing situation remains confusing and difficult. They can't sit around waiting for the phone to ring, it doesn't sound like he'll be calling. There was a cause, whether it's a mental health one or something else going on in his life, this was what he did. He's an adult runaway of sorts. People need to come to grips with the fact that "things" will never be as they were before he left. Maybe for good reasons, maybe not. What was the cause of his actions may never be fully known or understood. Everyone concerned needs to work through this terrible and unfortunate experience. and maybe counseling would be helpful. Hugs to all of you who are experiencing illness themselves or coping with illness in their family. I hope you have all the support you need. I logged on at 9:00AM yesterday and was blown away by over a dozen well wishes which had been posted on Monday mornng in addition to the resonses from the weekend. I shared this thread with my oldest daughter who I think rolls her eyes when I mention someone or something from the forums. I think you understand the the term "stranger friends". My youngest had the mastectomy. The oldest is so impressed by the depth of concern and generosity of this group, and so am I every day. If you need something, ask the group. It is so wow! Heritagehd07, I hope you are doing well. so sorry about you and your mother. moosemac, at first part of me felt exactly the same as you about my baby's beautiful body, but I understood her decision. My daughter chose to have a double mastectomy because she felt she would not be able to handle the anxiety of frequent mammograms and testing, She is the same beautiful loving daughter, sister, mother, wife. Besides she didn't have boobz when I got her. I am so sorry that the last several years have been so rough for your daughter. I am no expert by any means, but message me about whatever. Bunny, thank you. You and your daughter have such resilient spirits. It has been reassuring to learn about your daughter's recovery. May it continue to go well. Raee, the bandages will stay on at least until my daughter sees the plastic surgeon on Monday to have 2 of the drains removed. I will get her the cream in case bandages are removed and changed to remove the drains. Annie, I will show my daughter the knited knockers. see what she thinks. I am not sure she needs them since whe has temporaries.

My thoughts and prayers are with your niece, Eva. My good friend's sister just went through a double mastectomy and some chemo about a year ago, and she is doing great!

Modern medicine and technology are wonderful!

Sending good thoughts and prayers for your niece. She was wise in having regular mammograms, and in choosing to have the double mastectomy--not only for prevention, but she will be more comfortable, with no lopsided feeling. My very best to her. Please keep us posted on her progress.

Lots of prayers and good thoughts for Barbara. My daughter had a mastectomy about 4 years ago too. Her's was caught early also. She had reconstruction done at that time too. But she didn't have them both removed. She's doing well, and I know you will too.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery from Thunder Bay, Ontario, CANADA.

My cousin has a double mastectomy Dec/07. She was sent home the very next day to recover with a nurse visiting daily for dressing changes.
