Good thoughts for my niece's mastectomies, please

My twin's daughter, Barbara, is having a double mastectomy on Tues. the 15th at Scott & White hospital in Temple. She as well as Neva's other 2 daughters and I have had regular mammograms, and thank goodness Barbara's cancer was found early. She's opting to have both breasts removed because of her mom's experience - Neva had a mastectomy in March of '95 and in May a malignancy was found in the other breast.

I know she'd appreciate your prayers and good wishes. I'll print everything out for her and take it to her - I'll be with her all next week. Thanks to you wonderful KTers!

I hope all goes well with her...and she heals quickly.

I think she chose the best way to go.

Update added: We went down and saw my new nephew Aiden. What a little cutie. He is in the nursery full time and has an IV in his poor little head running all the time. This evening though they finally got to put him into his mama's room so that is good news. They left the port in his head just in case they need to use it again. The funny thing is that he looks just like Hayden, the two can be twins. I feel for my sil, her mom is totally mean and driving her nuts and is no help at all. She was going to stay for a month to help out, and with the babies problems she will need the extra help but out of the blue said good bye last night and no one has seen her since. My sil overcompensates by saying that she will just figure it out on her own. She hasn't been around babies and only has 2 weeks maternity leave, 2 days gone already. I hope to go down on Sunday when they get home and snuggle that baby. I will post a pic in a new post when DH gets the pics downloaded. Stacie

I haven't heard anything more since my DSIL sent me a text this morning. Thank you all so much for the thoughts and prayers. I know they are working. Listen to the doctor very carefully. Immediately following surgery, a common comment is "I feel like I've been hit by a truck". Infection is one of the largest concerns. She will likely be wearing a drain tube for a few days, until drainage stops. The area around the tube must be kept sterile. It is a path by which infections can enter. This tube is a problem. It can be pulled out place during sleep. It may still be under the skin but out of action. Also, it can become plugged. And yes, there is collection bag. On the day of the surgery, have a friend or significant other bring her a cuddly stuffed animal. Present it to her a few hours following surgery about the time the anesthesia begins to wear off. If she is a cat person, get a cat; If she is a dog person, get a dog; If none of these, bring something that fits her person.

Better to have this mixed news that at least he's alive and well. But his walkabout continues with something less than concern for the feelings of his family. The guy decided to take an extreme step and leave with an untidy departure. From the family's perspective, the ongoing situation remains confusing and difficult. They can't sit around waiting for the phone to ring, it doesn't sound like he'll be calling. There was a cause, whether it's a mental health one or something else going on in his life, this was what he did. He's an adult runaway of sorts. People need to come to grips with the fact that "things" will never be as they were before he left. Maybe for good reasons, maybe not. What was the cause of his actions may never be fully known or understood. Everyone concerned needs to work through this terrible and unfortunate experience. and maybe counseling would be helpful. My thoughts and prayers are with your niece, Eva. My good friend's sister just went through a double mastectomy and some chemo about a year ago, and she is doing great!

Modern medicine and technology are wonderful!

Sending good thoughts and prayers for your niece. She was wise in having regular mammograms, and in choosing to have the double mastectomy--not only for prevention, but she will be more comfortable, with no lopsided feeling. My very best to her. Please keep us posted on her progress.

Lots of prayers and good thoughts for Barbara. My daughter had a mastectomy about 4 years ago too. Her's was caught early also. She had reconstruction done at that time too. But she didn't have them both removed. She's doing well, and I know you will too.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery from Thunder Bay, Ontario, CANADA.

My cousin has a double mastectomy Dec/07. She was sent home the very next day to recover with a nurse visiting daily for dressing changes.
