Alaska slide show movie experiment

I've been putting together slide shows of my travels to Alaska in March. This file is the only one small enough to upload to Photobucket. I want to see if I can put a link here.

If it works, this is a slide show of a drive we made down what is called the Turnagain Arm, south of Anchorage. It takes you to Seward and Whittier.

In order to get to Whittier you have to travel through a 2.5 mile one lane tunnel shared with the railway system. In the slide show, the entrance looks like an A-frame house. Two birds looking for food hung around the staging area where cars wait their turn to go through the tunnel.

The highway and railway schedules are carefully orchestrated to allow both to use the one lane, both directions. Cars can travel to Whittier on the half hour and back toward Anchorage on the hour. I'm not sure when the trains run since it takes about ten minutes to drive through the tunnel. I'm just happy we didn't meet one either direction! :-)

I am going way out on a limb here. I visualize hosta as a plantthat is like other deciduous perennials but with its main stem, trunk, whatever squashed like an aluminum can going to the recycler. Nodes appear on the squashed trunk (crown)and from these nodes, like on the other "normal" deciduous perennials that have nodes on their trunks or stems, either leaves or roots can grow. This is how stem cuttings are propogated. Leaf cuttings can be propogated from leaf blade tissue, but not petiole, which is the stem that bears the blade. I have done this with hydranga. Is it possible that the nodes on the crown select to become either a root or a leaf by sun penetration, similar to the way tuberous plants petiole find the sunshine through the dirt? Those in the dark become roots and those in the light leaves. This is fun - truly - and I think we all suspect might be futile. Maybe we should be experimenting more on leaf blade cuttings instead of petiole cuttings. I like Tanganyikan Cichlids. I bred Malawans back in the 1960's along with riverine haps as they were coming into the US. The first person out of Africa that tried to breed M.auratus spent a thousand dollars on stock but had only the yellow and black females and no blue and black males. No guys - no kids. I am so happy to have come across this post! I purchased a condo 4 years ago and am now selling it. I live on the 3rd floor (1 bedroom) however the unit below me is considered one unit and is a 2 floor unit (2 bedrooms). My downstairs neighbor and I started off rocky and since then she's been constantly complaining about excessive noise from my unit. Stomping, slamming doors, using appliances etc in the late hours of the night. It's come to the point where she's escalating to the HOA BOD- however i'm also now selling my unit because I purchased a single family home in a new development and in order to save and put myself out of the misery of living with my neighbor will just live elsewhere while waiting for the new house to be built. If I had known what I know now I would not have opted to purchase a condo on the 3rd floor (in a 4 floor building). 1) Living on the 3rd floor I received noise complaints from my neighbor below me while I also had to endure noise from the person above me. (Being the understanding neighbor that I was I never once complained to the person above me since they have children so I opted for earplugs instead). Mind you I live in a one bedroom and so I never purposely tried to create noise but some things are inevitable like having to walk to my bathroom. I refuse to tiptoe in my own house but I assure you i'm not stomping i'm walking regularly! 2) As many people mentioned you cannot pick your neighbors! I'm going to be honest my community is filled with some downright nasty neighbors. If it's not me dealing with my crazy neighbor there's constantly complaints and random letters on our community corkboard. People complaining about how people park, how people throw away trash, how long the water is shut off for construction. People literally use a notice as a form of communication and will write on it and form conversations on that one piece of paper. 3) Your condo might look/seem nice now but you never know what it'll look like 20-30 years from now. Although i've only lived in my place for 4 years I have to say that I was shocked at the lack of care for the building. My boyfriend got stuck in the elevator once for an hour with a cancer patient in our building on a very hot day and there is barely any ventilation in the elevator and no air conditioning! I later learned from a neighbor that our elevator is the wrong type of elevator for our building. Additionally I think the materials used for our building are just downright poor. I can hear the person in the unit above me snoring. I can't tell the person above me to stop snoring, but that's just to show how it could be a mix of bad materials. At least with an apartment you know it's a somewhat temporary situation.. if you hate it you could potentially move elsewhere with not much risk. Honestly before purchasing my single family home I even considered a townhouse as an upgrade to my condo. I figured that sharing sidewalls with individuals is a lot less worse than sharing floors/ceilings which I think are just terrible and usually amplify noise. At the end of the day i'm happy to be moving away from this situation and moving to a place where I can run the dishwasher and use the overnight cycle at night without someone berating me! It came to the point where my neighbor's requests were aggressive and rude and made me feel uncomfortable living in my own condo.

The dials on a slide-in range are at the front. You don't reach over the hot burners and steaming pans to change temps. This is recommended for "universal access" kitchens because a wheelchair person can use them a little better, although the surface is not lowered. These dials are easily accessed by a child, which might not be a benefit, though, if the child is just playing. The digital clock on the upright backed models is easily seen from a distance; same with the lighted indicators that show whether surfaces are hot or oven is in use. On a slide-in, the front dials and controls are on the same plane as the cooking surface so I would assume you need to approach the unit to see the lights. somewhat off topic.... regarding ranges....We began this remodel with the intention of using our old electric coil range until it died. I began to do some research and found that the upraised back on new ranges has risen significantly in my lifetime. I suspect that the gov't began to require that the dials be positioned farther from the cooking surface--in two past ranges I've worked with the dials were cockwacky because they'd melted a bit. Today's range appears to be abt 75 inches tall at the back OR HIGHER. This is a significant design aspect if you're planning new construction. We thought we'd put our niche behind range up high enough to clear any new range but when I got new one, there it is arching in front of the bottom of the niche just a bit. If you're going for a standard range like this, forget any fancy backsplash, esp if you have an under cab hood unit there also, since it has to be mounted lower than some of the decorative hood units. Our niche extends up behind the vent unit, which allows taller bottles if I get crazy and buy one of those exotic olive oils or something. There is only about a foot of actual space between the top of the range's arched back and the bottom of our vent unit. Doesn't bother me at all. nini804, there's a quote that says that any time form goes before function, take our your wallet.

If you look closely you can see me taking the photo of the moose as a reflection in his eyeball and one of the gals I was traveling with standing far behind me saying "are you crazy Jodi?" LOL

Now if only I could get the Iditarod race slide shows small enough to upload to Photobucket. It only allows 100Mb movie files and my other slides shows far exceed that.

I'm working on uploading all of my slide shows to YouTube. Not sure why I didn't think of that to begin with. duh!
Quality is a lot better and they allow up to 2Gb files. Huge difference!

Dani, the Winter CD is my absolute favorite. I've told people if I had to choose one CD to take on a deserted island, it would be that one.

I used George Winston for all four of my slide shows. The one I posted here uploaded to YouTube without any trouble. The next one I tried to upload came back with a copyright infringement notice. They then offer up some lame copyright free music to choose from. What a drag. :-(

We're traveling by rail from Anchorage to Seward when we go to Alaska in August. I find it cool we'll be traveling the same paths!

The reindeer babies were adorable! Guessing they are reindeer. Also like the first closeup of the bird.

Lori, I was literally close enough to touch her soft, fuzzy nose and was *very* tempted.

Janie, those are elk. The one who is facing the camera would not leave me alone. I kept trying to get a clear shot of the males rutting in the background and she would come right up to my face and stand there. Running to another location just made her follow me. I had to snap photos before she caught up with me. I have dozens of photos of her face in my camera. LOL

Glad everyone is enjoying the slide show.

I created it actually on a Mac using iPhoto, and then saving it as a movie. One of the easiest things I've ever done. Incredibly easy in fact. The hardest part was choosing the right music and now that I have done that, YouTube won't allow me to upload with the music. I'm so bummed.

I'm going to go see if I can find another site to use. If anyone has suggestions let me know.
