DH and I went to San Diego last weekend for three days to spend time with my best friend from high school who was there as well. Below are some photos I took at the harbor.

I only have a few sundews, and I used to grow them in the terrarium. Only recently I put them outside... so I am not sure how they will fare, but another S.D. grower grows his outside with great success. It depends on which species, and how many you want to grow, but I would probably just start with a couple online purchases. Many sundews will self-propagate and you will end up having a ton of seed in no time. Have you ventured to some of the other CP (carnivorous plant) forums? There is a great online community full of specialized help on TF... I guess I can't use the name on here because of an automatic blocker (Just google "carnivorous plant forums" and it is the second entry that pops up with the acronym TF). They would also be able to give you a lot better advice on Sundews than I can because I only grew the 2 species I have because they were free plants with a Nepenthes order I placed with Cobraplant. My name on TF is "Nepenthes". Feel free to shoot me a PM anytime... I spend more time there than over here.

I will try to ID some of your question plants: #104 is a Ficus dammeropsis (as is #82); First large philodendron is Evansii, the second is bipinatifidium; #99 palm is Parajubaea torralyi; Dioon in first cycad photo is meijae, and others are actually ferns I think (Blechnum gibbums); first 'cactus' is indeed a Euphorbia ammak, I think; and second 'cactus' is Alluaudia procera; #11 is a bottle tree or Brachychiton rupestris; the palms you called European Fan palms (can't recall number, if any) are Nannorhops (not European, but Iranian); #57 is Dioon merolae; photo #50 is a Caryota, but not sure what species... something a bit unusual as it does not appear to be a gigas or a urens; never heard of the name Macraw palm... those are Rhopalostylis (Nikau palms I have heard them called) from New Zealand; Hawaiian native succulents are Brighamia insignis; ficus close up #30 is Ficus lyriata; #35 and 33 etc. are Brachychiton discolor; #23 I think is Trithrinax campestris; #14 is Chamaedorea tepejilote; all the Staghorns in all your photos are Platycerim bifurcatum, though they do have nice examples of superbum at that zoo (just no photos of them above); Palm in last palm photo is a Pritchardia, but no clue what species.

I was just there yesterday! We were down visiting for a family reunion and I think our visit to Coronado was my favorite part--the weather was perfect, the beach sand beautiful, and the waves just right for my (grown) daughter to wade into with her skirt. Very relaxing, though I was a bit peeved to see that it cost $15 for two hours of parking. You took lovely pictures and thanks for sharing them.

0nametaken0 Prices varied. Generally, they had $1-$3 ones in the small 2 inch pots, $3-4 for 3 inch pots, $4-6 for the 4 inch pots. It all depended on the vendor, type, and condition of C&S of course. It was nice because most of the pots already had relatively gritty soil and had nice top dressing. Some of the ones I bought had what I believe to be 1:1:1 soil:perlite:granite so you knew it wasn't growing in some junky peat moss lol. There were so many vendors and so many sizes of each C&S, there was a lot to choose from based on your price ranges. Of course there were more expensive C&S available but I wasn't looking to spend too much there. There were some pseudolithos that I really thought about getting but passed on and they were $11-$12 for one, although that was just at one vendor. Also a few Cephalocereus senilis that was about 2 feet tall that was being sold for $20, passed on that one too.

That statue is a replica of the famous picture in Life? Magazine taken on VE day, the day WWII was announced to have ended in Europe. The streets were filled, and the photographer said he saw this sailor grabbing and kissing every woman that went by. So he waited for a woman in a light colored dress to come by for the best picture composition in the sea of dark clothing so that the couple would stand out in the crowd. A nurse came by, and ... Voila.

Last week I went to see Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. There is a scene where a couple characters jump into a painting of the sailor kissing the nurse. One of the characters takes the place of the sailor. His kisses the girl and then runs off, just like it happened in real life (well, except for the jumping into a painting part :-)

I didn't know someone had made a statue from that photograph. How perfect!

I wonder if the woman in the article was really that nurse. She's awfully short! But maybe the sailor wasn't terribly tall, either.
