Pretty! We ate lunch there on our visit, it was so fun to see it. I think "Some Like It Hot" was filmed there.

Balboa Park San Diego anyone?

What everyone said - the rose garden is a bit past prime, as we had a wicked heat wave a few weeks ago, but you may see some things back in bloom. If you ever visit a bit earlier, besides the Balboa Park rose garden, you definitely will want to drive up to the Carlsbad Flower Fields to see all the lovely Ranunculus in bloom, plus they also have a spectacular rose garden, as well as all the Ecke poinsettias in a tent. Worth the visit if you can time it right. And, the San Diego Botanical Garden in Encinitas is not to be missed. Very lovely and magical there. Patty S.

Great pics, Sharon! I'd love to know more about the wine vat. Do the grapes ferment in the vat? Doesn't it get hot in the island sun? How often do they make a "batch" of wine? Do you know if any residents make their wine this way? Thanks! Teresa

We just got back from a week long trip with a 3 year old. He was not all that impressed with the zoo--I love the zoo and was not impressed with it either. The bus tour basically just showed you where the animal attactions were--most of the time you could not really see anything. He loved the train ride in Balboa Park. We did not have time to do any of the museums. We did the Wild Animal Park and he liked that much better than the zoo. It was a LOT of walking though. They were having a dinosaur exhibit that he really liked. His favorite things there was the Lorikeet feeding and carousel that was full of wild animals--not the standard horses like other carousels. We went on a tour of the USS Midway--he was not interested at all. We did a bay tour with one of the companies there on the bay and he loved that. Bring lots of quarters if you go downtown because it's all meter parking. While there we went over to Seaport Village and he loved that. They have a large fountain that fascinated him as well as a beautiful antique carousel ride from 1895 (all wooden horses). He loved the pizza place there and the candy shop. We went to Coronado one day and he loved the beach/ocean. He would have been happy with any beach/ocean though. We went to La Jolla on our way back from the Wild Animal Park and it was beautiful but it would have been too rough for him to play in the water. We didn't make it to Legoland because we also had a teenager with us. We also didn't go to Seaworld just becaues we have one near us and go all the time.

concerning "double digit" low temps I was there in 1990 when I believe that the low was around 9!!! that said, the coastal land near-coastal area is mostly USDA 9a and fairly mild most of the time as far as winters go---but my place gets some white frost on the ground most every year so "zone 9" is not a magic charm against cold weather by any means. FWIW, the biggest cordyline australis in bandon that I'm aware of is probably about 25' tall (coos bay/north bend plants are about the same size). the big "champion" douglas fir your are referring to are actually several miles inland around coquille and myrtle point generally in protected ravines that are moister in the dry summers and protected to some degree from wind storms. no doubt there were also big trees closer to the coast once upon a time but they likely got cut down rather quickly when the logging business came in the latter part of the 19'th century. a great book about the various champion trees of many species is "forest giants of the pacific coast" by Robert Van Pelt (he also has a good book on the various champion trees of Washington state as well). the "giants' book is beautifully illustrated so it's great just to look at as well as read through.

I have stayed at The Del for a business conference a couple of times and the beaches are so beautiful. The sand is fluffy, not at all like normal sand (if that makes sense.) Anyway I loved my stay and I love that the hotel has so much history to it. We even explored and found the haunted room (or what we thought was the haunted room.) ~LOL~

I love the Hotel Del!

Here's a bit of trivia for you -- the book Somewhere in Time placed the romantic story at the Hotel Del, but because it's so modernized, they could not shoot it there. Instead, it was shot at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan -- helpful since they don't allow cars on the island -- the ones in the movie were brought over just for the filming.

I was just there yesterday! We were down visiting for a family reunion and I think our visit to Coronado was my favorite part--the weather was perfect, the beach sand beautiful, and the waves just right for my (grown) daughter to wade into with her skirt. Very relaxing, though I was a bit peeved to see that it cost $15 for two hours of parking. You took lovely pictures and thanks for sharing them.
