Comments (7)Well, umm...I really don't know, or can't say...until the time comes when my calendar frees up a bit & I hear of a show I think I can make. We're moving horses to different stables right now, just started up a horse biz, are having one of our dogs spayed (so recoup time coming), will most likely have jury duty in last week, have a wedding to attend & blinds will be delivered that I have to install! :D And that's just this month! =)...See Moresan francisco succulent & cactus society sale this weekend!
Comments (11)Stan, most of these same sellers are also at the San Jose sales (in Santa Clara) *twice* a year. Have you tried attending those? That would be easier to get to for you, and you'll find some of the same plants and pottery there. Sometimes these are better, because you get first dibs on rare plants in Spring before the larger summer sale. I've found some real nice ones there. In the East Bay, you could also try the UCB sales for succulents (but that can be a parking nightmare which is worse than in SF). These sales and shows are driven by the local C&S societies, so if there was one based in Oakland, I don't see why it wouldn't happen there as well. Is that group now defunct? The traffic and parking issues are certainly pitfalls for sellers but the tradeoff is having a larger venue and more potential buyers. This sale turned out to be one of the best years ever, so despite the economy, bridges and traffic, people are still spending on plants. The prices are definitely higher this year, but not more than what you'd find on eBay or the online growers, especially for the caudex plants. The cost of the space there is up this year and staff is down..and the sellers are certainly not getting rich doing this, and most are just supporting their hobby. But you'll still see them driving up from central California and even Arizona to participate....See MoreI don't Know where you guys are, but...!
Comments (12)Hi Neil, nice plants you have. Wish I could make the trek to San Diego, but muchas grande too far- I'm north of Lake Ontario near David and Rina...and to David re. Toronto C & S show- I was there last year, and going again this year. So, some tips and advice---Bring cash- liquidate as many belongings as you can if you have room for many new acquitions, you will need the cash. And speaking of cash there is no plastic transactions, if I recall, so 5's, 10's, 20's, Loonies, Toonies, ( plants are priced at even dollar #'s i.e. 4$, 5$, 6$, 12$ 21$, etc...- there is lots to buy). And it may be too late, but start working out. Begin with lighter weights, then incease to your maximum ability---the crowd is ferocous, so you will need to be fit to compete with the c &s starved crowd. Ovaltine works too. It's a beautiful place with lots of other demonstration gardens inside the greenhouses...and stay out of my way, I've been working out in anticipation :)...See More- 8 years ago
