Would an albino raccoon last long in the wild?

I don't think so. That's another reason I don't want to release it. Actually, most raccoons that are trapped and re-located don't last very long either. Same as those that are raised as pets and people get tired of them and turn them loose. They can't adjust and the raccoons that already live in the area won't accept them.

Yes, most albinos don't live long in the wild, it seems.

Poor little guy... glad he was rescued from the trap. I don't think I'd know that he was a racoon if you hadn't told us.

It does look like an opossum. But, Marilyn knows her Possems. She has some in her little Rescue.

Marilyn, did you see my Post about Lake Somerville, Texas Corp or Engineers. There is a huge Racoon Colony there and protected. He may stand a chance there after he is healthy enough.

I saw that. It would have as good a chance here as anywhere.
The problem is raccoons are territorial, and if it is a male, it for sure won't be accepted. I have a raccoon here that I raised about 6 years ago, and she stays around. If I had raised it from a baby and it was a female, I'd feel a little better about it.

I really don't know if it is a male or female but I think I can find a better place for it. Some people would kill it just because it is different. I already have enough trouble with people coming down the bayou here at night with spotlights. If they just want to look at the coons, I don't mind, but some of them are looking for a good place to go hunting.

I hope a zoo will take it. You are a dear to take care of these animals.

Traps should be outlawed forever. So many animals die horrible deaths or are injured badly. I had a pet raccoon years ago and he had half his nose gone from being caught in a trap. I'd like to put the trapper's you know what in a trap!

Saw your message about her being a nursing mother. How long do you think she was away from her babies? I so afraid they didn't make it without their MOM.

Lily316, she was caught in a live trap, which is the most humane way to trap an animal, however, I wish people would really consider if they can possibly get by and not trap raccoons and possums and let them live where they are. I know it is not always possible but often it is.

What is so sad is that people will trap animals and then not check the traps and leave them there for days without food or water. It happens more to possums than raccoons. I get a lot of possums that have infected jaws from chewing the steel bars until their gums are completely worn away and you can see the teeth sitting on the bone. It takes 4 months for them to heal. It is horribly cruel.

I also have a possum here that was caught in a leg hold trap. She is permanently crippled and blind in one eye because she was attacked by fire ants. It is so disgusting, the things I see. I hate this so much, but the only reason I do it is because there literally is no one to take my place that has enough land and experience, and time, to take care of them.

Kathy, my friend took her back to where she was trapped. She was hoping she could find the babies, and if she did, she would bring them all back home and let the mother raise them. If she couldn't find the babies, she was going to release her there, and hope that she would go to the babies and be able to take care of them.

As hot as it is here, I don't know if they are still alive.
I will find out later today what happened. I know that my friend will go to any length to find the babies and hopefully, re-unite the mother with them.

Marilyn. I could never do the work you do. I feed a little opossum every night. He lives under my garden house. But two week ago I found baby skunks wandering around in the daylight. I picked one up and brought it to my yard where I fed it. I wore gloves and i know this is against the law. Poor little thing ate it all. I put him in my yard and left to go out to eat. When I got home my neighbor was pushing him into a trash can w/ a shovel. He said he didn't kill it but was taking it to the creek. The next day I found a dead baby skunk hit by a car in the alley. The next day as I sat on my back porch another baby skunk walked by. I was going to save one if it killed me. I picked him up and put him in a small cage with food. I kept him in there for almost a week . Then we built a 14 foot chicken wire cage for him. He buried under the small cage w/in the big cage and came out at night. Three days ago at dusk I took him to the deep woods beside a creek and some fallen logs and left him go. I fell in love with this dear little creature and i know some idiot trapped the mother and all the babies almost died. I just hope my little guy made it. He had teeth and was about 8 inches long minus the tail and seemed capable.

Lily, that's so kind of you. Something had to have happened to their mother. I've never raised skunks, but my friend does. I hate rehabbing. I love the animals...but I hate the people.

I put an update post about the albino raccoon, but it was also about Dave's Garden, another gardening website, and I think it must have been removed. I don't see it now.

Anyway, the raccoon turned out to be a nursing mother and was returned to where she was trapped, which was in a large park in the country. She should never have been trapped in the first place. My friend talked to the park officials about the raccoon and they have agreed to not trap her again. Hopefully she got back in time to save her babies.

Old age is catching up to me. I see my post about Dave's Garden is still there.

I'm with you ..I love the animals but hate the people that trap or hurt animals. How long was the albino raccoon away from her babies.? I had pet raccoon for a year many years ago and they are the smartest little creatures. This little skunk was smart too and very appealing. Thanks for all your good work. They asked me to rehab, but I won't. I will save every creature that I come upon and I would have taken the baby skunk to a rehabber but the nearest one who would take a rabies vector animal was two hours away. It was scary enough transporting him in our car about 6 miles knowing he could spray if he got disturbed. When I sat on a log in the deep woods and that little guy ran around and over my shoes and up the log, I thought to myself...I like animals much better than most people.

The raccoon was away one night, the next day and was returned the next night, so probably around 30 hours. Hopefully, they will be okay. BTW, there is at least one other albino raccoon in that park. I have a lot of raccoons here, and one of the young ones was born with a bobbed tail. I call him "Puff". I've been trying to get a picture of him but he is hard to recognize unless he turns his backside to me. :)

Raccoons are extremely smart. When I first moved here, I started feeding the raccoons because I raise waterlilies and that was the only way I could keep them out of the lily tanks. I had a lot of them named, and they learned their names, and would come when called.

I raised 3 baby raccoons and one of them is still here. Maybe two...I am not sure I can recognize the other one, but the tamest one is named Audrey, and every night she comes to me for yogurt. She used to want grapes all the time but now she just wants yogurt. She is usually ready for it before I am ready, but if I happen to get it before she is here, I can call her by saying, "Audrey! La Crema! La Crema!!" (That's what I call it when I talk to her. You know, you live by yourself...you get a little nuts.) Anyway, she comes running. If she is ready and I am busy, she follows me around, patting me on my leg, or pulling on my pants leg
to remind me that she is here.

Yesterday I got a newborn squirrel. Someone thought it was a possum. I don't know if I will be able to raise him, but I am trying. He still had his umbilical stump, so it is awfully hard to raise one that may not have even got to nurse it's mother very much, if at all.

Even tho I hate the cruel things I see, and I get down on people who do them, I do meet some of the kindest people and that makes me feel a whole lot better. People will go out of their way to help a hurt or orphaned animal, and when people bring me animals, I try to keep them updated with pics and emails to let them know that the animal is doing okay.

A lady and her daughter brought me a baby possum that had been mauled by a dog. They were literally crying. Fortunately, the dog had just slobbered on it a whole lot and the little thing was okay, and he went on to grow up just fine, but they stayed in touch for a long time, checking on him. It was sweet.

Remember the little possum that was in my house. I really grew attached to it. I did catch it and took it down the road and onto a side dirt road that runs by a creek. I look that way every time I pass thinking I might see it. I was surprised that I never saw any signs of the little guy in my house and decided that he was going in and out. But the day that I released him out by the creek I came home to find that he had used a laundry basket with mismatched clean socks in it as his litter box.
