How does one know when to negoatiate prices on merchandise?

I hope someone can give me some tips on when and how to negotiate for a better price on something in a store. I know it must depend a lot on what you want to buy, where you are, the inventory on hand, etc.

In this case, I would like to buy a sofa from a local Bassett furniture store. The sofa is $1879 and is reduced to $1514 plus delivery of $120 plus 6% sales tax.

I've NEVER been good at asking for a better price--forget me attempting to buy a car without taking along a friend and late my husband for moral support. Yet I recently read in The New York Times article how people should try to negotiate on big ticket times such as furniture or rugs.

I think the salesperson is just going to laugh or tell me to go somewhere else. I can live with rejection--just how do I go about trying? How do you propose that they throw in the delivery charge, for example, without them just laughing at you?

Any tips would be helpful!
