Thanks so much for the warm welcome my cousin Sharon started here !

My given name is Yvonne, but family calls me Vonnie, so you may do the same. I live in Upstate NY. I am in my late 40's. I am the mother of 4. Daniel Lee is 27, Robert David is 26, Matthew Scott is 24, and Megan Ashley is 21. I also have a step daughter Stephanie Alexis 17, who lives with her Mom. I have 3 adorable grandsons Keegan Scott 4, Kameran Matthew 1, and Hayden Daniel 11 months.

My current dilemma is this darn wedding dress ! Larry and I were married 3 years ago and this dress is just hanging around. I have tried to sell it to no avail and then saw a thread somewhere about using it for christening gowns, etc. However, I am NOT having anymore children and none of my grandbabies will not be christened so................ I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance ladies !! I will post another photo later.

How about donating it to someone who can't afford a wedding dress?

I did give that a thought. But I don't know of anyone personally. I spent almost 300.00 in alterations, it could easily be altered back I suppose other than the length... I am pretty short. Anybody know of someone in great need ?

Very beautiful, both roses!!! In the past I tried growing Lady Emma Hamilton for one year, but for me she had too weak and disappointing of a scent and she couldn't take Kansas heat, planted in a pot-- I'd have to water her as much as twice a day or she would start to croak and wilt from the heat. I tossed her, because she'd have to have the super strong scent in order for me to want to spend that much time coddling her. But in the meantime, I'm sure everyone else will be running to get her after seeing your photos! Ambridge is also looking super nice!

I had a problem with a cat using the corner of the living room for a litter box. After replacing the carpet and installing hardwood, I thought the problem was solved. But no. I heard some scratching noise on the hardwood and went to investigate and found a rather unpleasant pile. What I found to solve the problem is called SSSCat. It is about the size of a hairspray can and the top contains a motion sensor. When the cat walks by it blasts a spray of air. I put one in each of the 2 corners the offenses were occurring. One blast was all it took. That cat will not set foot in the room again. you can use it on counters, furniture, rooms you want to keep the cat out of. Separate the woodstove/cookstove and fridge. If the stove is a room heater, it has to radiate heat, in a big way. And if it is also a cooker it will still radiate heat on hot days in the summer adding to the load. Now if its something like an old-fashioned wood-fired AGA it's primarily a cooker and only secondarily a room heater (It's really a room warmer, but not a heater if you get my meaning.) Canning, espcially pressure canning (all non-acid produce like veg.. require pressure canning) on a woodburning appliance will make you cry in frustration. I know, because I've lived and cooked in houses with only a wood cookstove (and no electricity!) and aside from the fact that canning happens on hot days at the end of summer when the last thing you want to do is mess around with a wood cooker, it's nearly impossible to keep the canner's pressure steady with wood. You can, with enormous diligence, run a water bath canner on wood, but temp issues still make it a miserable on hot summer days. So, I second pllog's rec. to get at least one portable burner, or electric coil if you plan to can. Or a gas hot plate. Most canners are aluminum and won't work on induction (all pressure ones are as far as I know). I wouldn't waste the south east corner on a service space. It's far too valuable with sun and warmth potential, even if the view isn't great. Plus pantries are traditionally on the northeast corner in order to harvest the natural coolness of that space. May I make a useful preparation suggestion? Before you get too much farther down the planning road, I would recommend you get a copy of a tremendously useful book A Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander , et al. This book teaches what makes a house (also any land or neighborhood) a wonderful space to live and work in. The principles were articulated by studying housing across many cultures and areas, so they work very well for most houses and will work with your kind of project particularly well. The book isn't a picture book with pretty inspiration pictures, but a thoughtful exploration. It amply rewards the small effort it takes to figure out how to use it. It's a classic and the underlying foundation of lots of very popular shelter writers (Susan Susanka, for instance.) Organizing and planning an exciting project of this nature is difficult enough in your native country, so doing it long distance, or even as a resident expat, will really test your mettle. Funky, sort of like wearing a mullet? ;-) I found no logic to the mixing of fabrics in this dress. I get it when a different collar is used, but a dress that changes fabric four times in just the body? Other than that, it had no redeeming qualities. I'm in such a Return mood. Off with their heads!!! Today I boxed up a $400+ Dyson Animal (an animal it was) that tried to eat my area rugs and weighed almost as much as my old Kenmore canister. I stuffed it all into the box, taped it up, and then realized I'd left the ##%*## canister out. I had to cut through all the tape and shove that part in, re-tape, etc. I got to my Macy's and the up escalator was not working. I had to be led to an elevator that no one knew existed. The great part was, Macy's took it back without blinking, then told me they hear awful things about Dyson and Shark is much better. So I bought a Shark, from Amazon.

Welcome! It is a beautiful dress! That is a hard one. I am not sure what I would do either. Did you try Craigs list? I have tons of luck with them. Have someone coming over today to buy our Kelty pack we used twice for daughter to go towards our son's disneyland trip.

I was going to suggest Craigslist, too. Where did you try to sell it? Craigslist and then eBay would be my suggestions. But I love the idea of donating it. A church might be a good place to start.

Well, it's about darn time you filled everyone in on you & that piece of 'white fluff'!! LOL!
There must be a consignment shop somewhere near you or in Binghamton...give it a try-if it were mine? Id do Craig's list first. If it doesn't sell on there? They do have a FREE catagory as well. Wish I could remember which country where my last wedding gown went to. I had it at my yard sale & this lovely lady bought it to send to her sister in some country, (may have been S.America- where 1x a year all of the women wear white gowns for some celebration.
Why don' you post over in the arts & crafts for suggestions..you might get some good ideas!
Whatever you end up doing with it? At least now I have a framed photo of it so I can always remember you in it!! Surprise & thanks Vonnie!

How about keeping it for your daughter? It's a classic dress that won't really go out of style.

Vonnie, if you just want to get it gone, check your local area volunteer services for shops like those sponsored by women's abuse centers, Goodwill, organizations that provide suitable clothing for special occasions, etc. You may find a great place which fits your philosophy, and feel good for doing it.

For the dress I donated an old dress to a group that makes preemie clothes and also makes burial gowns for stillborn babies and miscariages. They cut up the dresses to make tiny dresses for burial. I will try and find a link for you.

On a personal note, how weird is this. My youngest son is Hayden Daniel and is 11 months old. He will turn 1 on July 20th. What a coincidence.

The dress is lovely. I like Stacie's idea... sounds like a nice charity.

I sold my wedding dress at a garage sale. The girl that bought it didn't look like she would fit in it.. she was so tiny. But I knew my DD would never be able to wear it as she and I are totally different shapes... plus she is about 6 inches shorter than me.

My Grandmother kept the lace petticoat from her wedding dress and made it into a dress for my doll when I was an infant. Somewhere along the line I lost that doll. Grandma died in 1961. I am now 55 years old.

I know of a way to make a real difference without cutting up a perfectly good gown, and other wedding accessories on the nightly news some months ago.

Brides against breast cancer. They take donations of modern gowns from 2000 or more recent!

Mine is still in it's preserved box, after 26 years and no daughter or grandchildren to wear it. Dunno what I'll do with it some day. Is there much interest in the beaded and sequined high neck, long sleeve gown of the 80's these days!!!
