Introduction & My Darn Dress Photo

Thanks so much for the warm welcome my cousin Sharon started here !

My given name is Yvonne, but family calls me Vonnie, so you may do the same. I live in Upstate NY. I am in my late 40's. I am the mother of 4. Daniel Lee is 27, Robert David is 26, Matthew Scott is 24, and Megan Ashley is 21. I also have a step daughter Stephanie Alexis 17, who lives with her Mom. I have 3 adorable grandsons Keegan Scott 4, Kameran Matthew 1, and Hayden Daniel 11 months.

My current dilemma is this darn wedding dress ! Larry and I were married 3 years ago and this dress is just hanging around. I have tried to sell it to no avail and then saw a thread somewhere about using it for christening gowns, etc. However, I am NOT having anymore children and none of my grandbabies will not be christened so................ I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance ladies !! I will post another photo later.

How about donating it to someone who can't afford a wedding dress?

I did give that a thought. But I don't know of anyone personally. I spent almost 300.00 in alterations, it could easily be altered back I suppose other than the length... I am pretty short. Anybody know of someone in great need ?

Hi Ken- Welcome to the Forum.... I'm in St Pete and love roses as well... I have lots of roses grafted on Fortuniana, it is recommended for Fla. because of the nematodes, I get mine mail-order from K & M Roses in Miss. I also have some own-root OGRs also Austins... I try and grow organic, I use all kinds of stuff, Milorganite, Black Cow, Black Hen, Alfalfa pellets, Cottonseed meal, Fish emulsion... and use leaves and grass clippings and compost, thick mulch, the thicker the mulch the better.... the Tampa Rose Society is prob. near you and can help, I belong to the Heritage Rose Society in Lakeland at Fla. Southern, Dr. Manners is there and is a wonderful fountain of information, it's a great group of folks from all over Fla. .... I plant lots of my roses close together and use rebar as plant-stakes, and tie wayward canes to the rebar, to keep a pathway thru' the beds....and I plant companion flowers in front, Victoria Blue perennial Salvia and Pentas , Caladiums, Purslane, Tampa Verbaine - all make good border-plants and are low-growing.... so much fun and so little time !.........sally

Charliedawg! Alright, some fun stuff! I agree with your first thoughts that it needs a little something. I think corbels would be a good addition. I also really like pendent lights, they won't block your view. Our's don't. I agree that raised panel in that spot is likely a waste. I also agree that the kitchen won't really come to "life" until you add all your personal stuff. Here's a shot of our kitchen which includes corbels and pendents. Just like our properties, our kitchens are similar. Glad things are back on track. You can't stop writing after you move in. We want to hear all about life in the house. Seriously, what do I do about this DARN cat?

I had a problem with a cat using the corner of the living room for a litter box. After replacing the carpet and installing hardwood, I thought the problem was solved. But no. I heard some scratching noise on the hardwood and went to investigate and found a rather unpleasant pile. What I found to solve the problem is called SSSCat. It is about the size of a hairspray can and the top contains a motion sensor. When the cat walks by it blasts a spray of air. I put one in each of the 2 corners the offenses were occurring. One blast was all it took. That cat will not set foot in the room again. you can use it on counters, furniture, rooms you want to keep the cat out of. I wish I knew about this when I still had some nice Christmas ornaments :( Here is the product description: Product Description Scat the gentle way to protect off-limit areas. Stop cats from roaming freely throughout the house. This unique spray deterrent system uses an adjustable motion sensor to detect a cat's movement within three feet of a designated area. Once the cat has been identified, the system is capable of delivering either an audible warning or combining tone and a burst of compressed air. Package includes motion sensor device, adjustable spray nozzle, compressed air spray and instruction guide. You can buy it online at Petco or Amazon. I wish I had known about this years ago !!!!!

Introduction & A Few Questions

(Cressenda maybe?) Has very good cultivating knowledge with many types of succulents (IMO) In more words that you may care to read about your Adromischus Suggestions that you can follow or not follow. For starters it's not my plant but if it where I wouldn't re-pot it right away it looks healthy enough as seen and can handle the soil it's in until it has dried When dry, soil A should be easy to clean off of the roots in a sense soil should fall of the roots ( with no picking or rinsing) of the root after removing from the pot. Debatable as it may be. Re-potting an actively growing plant during it's most active time of growing just isn't my thing The current soil that it's in is going to be a lot easier to remove and safer on ALL the roots if you wait to re-pot when dryer. It takes time to adapt from it's current soil ( Soil A) to gritty mix ( Soil B) then to expect to use the current lighting and other suggestive ideas that may come along can be overwhelming for the plant ( and you). Soil I've got adros in nothing more than pumice and some have chicken grit and pumice.. Short factual story Once I was asked why do I use chicken droppings ( like a protest.).. Answer do you recall that line referencing light organics that you read from Cressenda ? Ummm are chicken dropping organic ? ( That's a yes BTW) Kind of baffling isnt it ? Some suggest don't use organics as others suggest do use organics. I think that 10 % in organic matter is very sufficient for a season for your adro as it does break down and will eventually flush out. I find apx 1/2 of a tea spoon of light organics is sufficient enough " LIGHT ORGANIC MATTER "for as many as five adro pots at my adobe @ twice a year feedings. 1 Containes sifted sand, chicken grit, and pumice 2 pumice and chicken grit some extra added perlite for reasoning as this one builds a caudex over time. Some /most Adro time clocks are equal to a decade. 3 Is just showing off it's abilaty to look funky odd from the high and long pollen season from being outside ( and still is ) Pumice and hand picked granite stones for top dressing Long pollen season too but with the help of water it'll come off ( slowly) 4 In Sifted course sand and some gravel is boasting it's older leaves and a fat caudex 5 Sized then hand picked pumice. chicken grit, accented with sizable gravel for top dressing Five pots chock full of porous/ grit materiel(s) Adromichus and 1/2 teaspoon of .... Very light organics as some of the older soil A may remain on the plant removal of all isn't a big ordeal some can and should remain Notes: Your pot ( when you do re-pot) will require a pot to be a bit more sized than any of the ones you see here. Pics where taken over the few weeks and are posted to demo the soil B grit mix content Depending on pot location ( being inside or outside) each pot varies with watering times during summer. Size of pot may also vary your current pot size is bigger in size than any two - three of mine in combined in size. Example the top pic can last three weeks in between watering if inside but would need watering weekly & sometimes to bi weekly if outside. Optional I use a damper sided soil B when re-potting, some will use a dry soil B then water after re-potting either way works. I preference to re-pot later in the day then allow the same lighting conditions as it already has for the next day with inside protection for as long as an entire season to a couple years The grit material and feeding substance you use use is optional as well the feeding manners you choose. It varies from one cultivator to the other. IMO the emphasis is on sharp/ fast draining and the available sources in which one finds/ gets material. Tips: You might not want to put your Adro outside this season as the foliage tips would burn and result in a long term discoloring of the effected leaves that do burn, some leaves may wrinkle ( and rather quickly as well, as quick as a few minutes to a couple hours of our time) while sending/ showing a false watering tell. In a sense keep em cooler after re-potting allowing them ample time to adapt to soil B. I imagine some outside lighting ( real sun time ) adjustments can be made during early fall for you depending on the day to day climatic conditions. The pot size in your pic is sufficient for a few years but would preference and suggest a solid wall pot for some of that warmer summer time outside sun basking next season. High fired hand made pots can be a little pricey at times a common Terra-cotta will work as well.

Welcome! It is a beautiful dress! That is a hard one. I am not sure what I would do either. Did you try Craigs list? I have tons of luck with them. Have someone coming over today to buy our Kelty pack we used twice for daughter to go towards our son's disneyland trip.

I was going to suggest Craigslist, too. Where did you try to sell it? Craigslist and then eBay would be my suggestions. But I love the idea of donating it. A church might be a good place to start.

Well, it's about darn time you filled everyone in on you & that piece of 'white fluff'!! LOL!
There must be a consignment shop somewhere near you or in Binghamton...give it a try-if it were mine? Id do Craig's list first. If it doesn't sell on there? They do have a FREE catagory as well. Wish I could remember which country where my last wedding gown went to. I had it at my yard sale & this lovely lady bought it to send to her sister in some country, (may have been S.America- where 1x a year all of the women wear white gowns for some celebration.
Why don' you post over in the arts & crafts for suggestions..you might get some good ideas!
Whatever you end up doing with it? At least now I have a framed photo of it so I can always remember you in it!! Surprise & thanks Vonnie!
hugs,
your Cuz

How about keeping it for your daughter? It's a classic dress that won't really go out of style.

Ps....welcome to the KT Vonnie!!!

Vonnie, if you just want to get it gone, check your local area volunteer services for shops like those sponsored by women's abuse centers, Goodwill, organizations that provide suitable clothing for special occasions, etc. You may find a great place which fits your philosophy, and feel good for doing it.

Vonnie,

For the dress I donated an old dress to a group that makes preemie clothes and also makes burial gowns for stillborn babies and miscariages. They cut up the dresses to make tiny dresses for burial. I will try and find a link for you.

On a personal note, how weird is this. My youngest son is Hayden Daniel and is 11 months old. He will turn 1 on July 20th. What a coincidence.

Welcome to the KT!

The dress is lovely. I like Stacie's idea... sounds like a nice charity.

I sold my wedding dress at a garage sale. The girl that bought it didn't look like she would fit in it.. she was so tiny. But I knew my DD would never be able to wear it as she and I are totally different shapes... plus she is about 6 inches shorter than me.

My Grandmother kept the lace petticoat from her wedding dress and made it into a dress for my doll when I was an infant. Somewhere along the line I lost that doll. Grandma died in 1961. I am now 55 years old.

I know of a way to make a real difference without cutting up a perfectly good gown, and other wedding accessories on the nightly news some months ago.

Brides against breast cancer. They take donations of modern gowns from 2000 or more recent!

Here is the website
http://bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/

Mine is still in it's preserved box, after 26 years and no daughter or grandchildren to wear it. Dunno what I'll do with it some day. Is there much interest in the beaded and sequined high neck, long sleeve gown of the 80's these days!!!
