I wonder how Moni is faring? it's a little chilly

this morning. Possibly where she is at the park, a few

degrees chillier than here. It was 50 degrees

here at 5:15am. I hope she brought a really nice

sleeping bag. She missed the temps that were in

the upper 80's. Today, is is supposed to reach 81

degrees here. She is working her way towards Canada

today. It will be sunny. Then they will be working

south, I think along the ocean (not Puget Sound by me), which will probably

be cloudy and it's ususally cooler out there than here.

I don't think I'll get a chance to meet her. Bad timing!

Kat, it is so foggy here we can't even see down the bluff to the water! BTW..what idiot decided it wasn't Puget Sound anymore but the Salish Sea!!

WHAT? The Salish Sea? I haven't heard that. It's just finally starting to get sunny here in Seattle. I don't think it's going to hit 83 though like predicted. It's still a little chilly out there.

I am a first year gardener. I grew up on a 160 acre farm supplemented with huge vegetable gardens. The gardens were beautiful and I helped tend them, as directed, but as a child had no interest. I had more important things to do. My parents had an interest because they needed to feed a family of six on the income of subsistence farmers. Fast forward 33 years and gardening is my new obsession. I referenced this board for hours to figure out what was happening almost on a daily basis. I know I would have been much less successful had it not been for the wisdom and willingness of people to share. Here is a list of goals I had in the middle of this past May: - get a garden in the ground - try to do something right to produce something - learn, learn, learn. - stay organic if possible. Biggest lessons learned: - plant at the right time for my zone. I grew up in Ky, a zone 6 I believe, and now live in zone 8, almost 9 because we are right on the coast. In zone 6, you live and die by the frost dates. Here the "ender" of the season is a mixture of heat and bugs. - don't crowd the plants. The viners like cukes and melons need a lot more space than the 8 foot diameter requirements specified on the packets. - I think I could have pruned more and been ahead. Planting in May instead of March, like I was supposed to, was asking for powdery mildew due to the crowding and the high humidity here. I learned a lot in my little 14 by 20 foot space. I produced 37 pounds and it's still going. It will be like a jungle when I get back, since I am away on a two week work trip. The three biggest producers were cucumbers, tomatoes, and green bell peppers. I also interplanted with flowers like Zinnias and Cosmos, and these also did very well. I have a 14 by 22 plot next to the existing undergoing solarization, and about 80 seedlings in the starting trays. I am encouraged and plan to start my fall garden when I get home. There will be broccoli, cauliflower, and lots of lettuce. I also plan to start some more yellow crook neck squash. It and all zucchini were destroyed by SVBs in the summer garden. I did however, remove and destroy about 15 of SVBs, so I did my part in removing them from the population. I get a lot of information and inspiration from this board. Thank you. And right now, it lets me be a "virtual" gardener since I am away from home.

It was 2 degrees here this morning. brrr! Sun is out, haven't been out there yet. Hope these temps are going to be short lived. The furnace has been cranking. Thanks Jane, interesting article. I am a marmalade fan, so IÃ¢ÂÂll have to look for some of these brands that have ginger in them and try it. DtD, that recipe sounds delicious. We will use a roast for pot roast once in awhile, but never thought of using it as a base for chili. So do you use beans with it or just Ã¢ÂÂchiliÃ¢ÂÂ spices? Sounds like I could use a large crockpot, too. Bill, I have been looking for new Ã¢ÂÂsoupÃ¢ÂÂ recipes, so IÃ¢ÂÂll have to try your version this winter. We had an Italian connection in our family in the past, and my Mother was a huge fan of many Italian dishes and got her sauce recipe from an old world Italian woman. We make lots of sauce and chicken cacciatore, minestrone soup and thereÃ¢ÂÂs always some of that in our freezer. Making tiny meatballs for chicken soup sounds like a new fun version. And the escarole adds a lot of nutrition. BTW, there is a new book out called Eating on the Wild Side, that reviews current studies of nutrition in food and I was surprised to learn that a can of tomato paste is chockful of nutrition and during the off season when fresh vegetables are not available from the garden, beans are one of the highest nutritional foods you can eat. And blue cornmeal if from a non GMO source, is also better nutritionally than yellow cornmeal, according to the book. So chili made with canned tomatoes and beans with blue cornbread is a very healthy meal. And the book is a very interesting read, if you donÃ¢ÂÂt find nutrition too dull. It also offers names of varieties of vegetables and fruits that are the highest in nutrition, that you can grow. As for gardening, IÃ¢ÂÂm not quite in the garden mindset yet. Later in January, IÃ¢ÂÂm sure that will change, but I am very interested in how all the Ã¢ÂÂzone pushersÃ¢ÂÂ are faring. As much of a worry as it is to have the temps dip so low, Bill, you are right, this will be a good test of which varieties are really solid zone pushers and I will be fascinated to see whose plants survive come spring. Laurel, sorry, I was gone all morning. I salt and pepper my meat (top of round steak), both sides. Then spread mustard on one side. At one end put a half of a pickle (depending on size) sliced long ways, some onion (about a table spoon full) chunks or slices, and 1/2 slice of bacon (last time I used ham, cause I had some) then roll it up from that end. Secure with metal pins, you know, the kind you can also use for closing a turkey, or use string/thread. Brown in hot oil, or bacon grease turning frequently to get it brown all the way around. Add about a cup or two of broth for gravy. I cooked mine for 15 minutes in my pressure cooker. My cookbook calls for a simmer time of 45 to 60 minutes. Thicken the juices with a mix of cornstarch and flour. Red cabbage Last time, I made a whole head, and had plenty of left overs. :) Quarter a head of cabbage, remove the white rib. Slice the cabbage very thin (my choice), unless you have a good shredder. Dice about 1/4 cup of onion peel and core an apple, and dice it too. Depending on your dietary restrictions, heat oil (any will do) or bacon grease, about 2 to 3 tablespoons in a large pan/dutch oven. add the onion, and as soon as it starts browning add the cabbage. Saute for a bit, add the apples just before adding about a cup of broth. Put the lid on and let it simmer on low for about an hour. When I cooked Rouladen and Red Cabbage for my friends earlier this month, I served them with boiled potatoes. Sorry, forgot to take pictures of the finished meal, we just dug right in.

I live outside of Tulsa. We were only without power for around nine hours. The next neighborhood over on the next street has been out for over 48 hours. Right now I have cable, phone, and internet, but it's been on and off for the last couple of days. I've been trying to wash as much laundry and dishes as I can in case we lose power again. There is supposed to be another ice storm coming in Friday night. We have a generator and a gas stove I can light with a match so we're pretty lucky. We were without power for a total of eight days during the December 2000 ice storms in Arkansas. We've learned from that experience. I keep candles, flashlights and easy to make foods like Hamburger Helper, ramen noodles, and canned soup in the cabinets. I drove to a mall in Tulsa yesterday to get my kids out of the house. The hallways were crowded, but there weren't many people in the stores. I think there were a lot of people there who didn't have power at home. They were just looking for a place to hang out and warm up. Several gas stations were closed. The ones that were open were crowded. I stopped at one that appeared to be out of gas. Half of the stoplights I went through were out. Everyone was polite and waited in line to drive through it. The businesses that have electricity seem to be really random. Some of the restaurants and businesses you would expect to be open aren't. I drove home without streetlights last night. It was eery. THere are downed trees and broken limbs all over the place. Yesterday it was 46 so the ice is melted. We are expected to get another storm this weekend. It's colder again today (around 30 degrees). We'll see what this weekend brings.

I like Salish Sea. I also love the marine air in the mornings clearing out about noon! Our kind of weather!

The term Salish Sea is a geographic term for the Strait of Georgia-Puget Sound-Strait of Juan de Fuca region and environs in the Pacific Northwest of North America. It has been accepted as an official name for the complex of inland waterways stretching from Tumwater, Washington at the south end of Puget Sound to Desolation Sound at the northern end of the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, and also including the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The name is now official in the United States and Canada. Its first known use was in 1988: marine biologist Bert Webber from Bellingham, Washington, created the name for the combined waters in the region, intended to supplement the Georgia Strait, Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca placenames; its adoption, he says, will raise consciousness about taking care of the region's waters and ecosystems. The current approval by Washington state and the recommendation to approve from the BC Geographical Names Office to its national equivalent, the Geographical Names Board of Canada, were the result of Webber's efforts to promote the term, although the proposal as approved does not wipe the older names off the map, as had been the original intent. Opponents to the Salish Sea designation assert that it is really a series of interconnected straits, sounds and inlets. Others oppose it for historic reasons and questions about the validity of the term "Salish".[1]

I made it to Canada. After checking in yesterday we rode in to fog. Approaching it, it got rather cool, and I stopped to put my laundry away (we do our laundry in the sink at the campground, and if it doesn't dry in the afternoon/evening, it gets hung on the bike till it dries), and put on a jacket. No matter, by the time we got to the campground and registered, we were totally chilled. Pitched the tent quickly, and showered, and made some hot tea to warm us up till our supper was cooked. Later we made a nice campfire.

Most of this is not in the journal yet, but I did update it a bit.

Updates will be spotty, depending on time and available libraries.
