Here's another question from "Today's Topic" in our local newspaper. If you're retired or not working, what would your choice be if you were?

If your employer offered you a choice among these perks, which would you choose?

Double the vacation

Increased health benefits

$5,000 pay raise

Flexible hours

10-year job security

Most people in the poll (542) chose the pay raise, with 368 votes for the 10-year job security.

I think I'd take the pay increase, too. What would you prefer?

Pay raise, definitely. I don't usually use all my vacation, I have good health benefits, I have fairly flexible hours and I have no need for job security at this particular employer as I'm in the market for a new job. A raise would be nice!

Hi Barb Some of your questions are outside my range of knowledge, however I can maybe help on some of them. With regards to planting this plant outside I think you could but I am not sure about overwintering it (someone will know though). If you intend keeping the plant in a pot on a sunny porch I would suggest that you put the plant container inside another container and fill the gap with gravel, this will allow you to water the gravel and help keep the roots cool. You will need 2 fairly big pots to do this as your plant will put on a lot of growth. The plant will respond better if you can give it some form of shade during the hottest part of the day. I do believe you, and I do believe her, but I don't understand the cutout number. How can 23.5 fit in a 23.375 space? The cabinets I'm buying say the box is built with a 5/8" thickness...this could be thicker than 1/2" in something like a Kraftmaid cabinet. I would so like to reconcile the calculation! Lovely thought on the drawers. I actually did have drawers first there, but changed the rollouts thinking that they gave just a bit more vertical space with no horizontal framing having to cross the space. But I agree it's less effort to open a drawer. Regardless, I like the look of the 26" oven depth to break up the line, so will likely switch to drawers and deepen.

MUA should really be provided mechanically, not through “drafty” walls, crawl spaces or attics. The hood you are purchasing should provide you with the volume of MUA that is required to run the system efficiently, assuming it is correctly sized with your gas range. Your log stove should have its own MUA system, but if you are relying on the hood system, it needs to be sized to accommodate both the log stove AND your gas range. The International Building Code for Residential Construction should provide all of the details you need (in the mechanical code) for this system - even if your local jurisdiction or contractors are not familiar with it.

Not an electrician: I believe the NEC prohibits using ducting as a wireway (conduit) because it is not approved for the application. There are also requirements on cables and conduit when in an air plenum, such as a ceiling used as an air plenum. Truly abandoned ducting is just metal surrounding a cable or conduit run. If the duct is greasy, then any conduit in the abandoned ducting should be sealed, and in my view incapable of supporting a fire, such as thinwall, IMC, or rigid. Flex might allow grease to intrude upon the conductors. UG cable might be OK. PVC conduit might be allowed. I have never noticed this particular case addressed in the NEC. For electrical questions, I argue that it is better to ask permission than forgiveness. See your Code Enforcement officer for advice. You may have to tear out some part of the ducting at each end for it to qualify as abandoned. I think it is a good idea, pending approval, if the duct is buried and the path needed is otherwise inaccessible without trenching under the building.

At present, with the awful schedule I have, I would like set hours every day, with weekends off.

I know, that wasn't on the list, but that is what I wish for.

Job security.

If you're in a field where you're nervous all the time about layoffs or even shutdowns, it would be a true gift-- priceless, in fact -- to let worry go, at least for a little while.

Pay raise. My job is pretty secure, and I have decent benefits and lots of vacation. I need more money.

Health benefits. When I retired from the federal government after 31 years, I was given a choice: Full Disability pension of $3300 a month with no health insurance or a Retirement pension of $3000 with both Medicare and Blue Cross. I took option two and I've never regretted it. I'm losing $300 a month but my kidney dialysis is paid in full and one of these days I will be getting a transplant.And, by the way, my Medicare and Blue Cross are not free for me , I do pay full premiums like any other schlub.

Frankly, a ten year job guarantee is "pie in the sky". Especially in these economic times. If the business fails, or has to be downsized, your employer could not be expected to keep that promise.

Health benefits are not determined employee by employee. The health plan is selected on an annual basis and is not usually negotiable individually.

Of the remaining selections I would have to go with the pay raise. At least the benefit would be there until it had to be cancelled for whatever reason.

Got great benefits.
We don't accrue vacation days, we just take it when we can.
I'm at the top of my pay scale.
Been with the company 6 years and hope to be retired after 10 years with them. They won't be happy but I need some 'me' time.

Now if I had flexible hours, my attitude might change.

Flexible hours! Which I sort of have now, I set my own time 59% of the time. That happens when you are 300 miles away from your boss! LOL!!!!

Pay raise, I guess.

Increased health benefits aren't a big deal in this area.

Actually ...

... each of you who isn't out of work/retired has a second job.

Managing your money ...

... to invest a portion of your income to provide security, support in case of emergency, lay-off, downsizing, etc.

And a comfortable retirement ... especially in these days of private pensions becoming about as scarce as hens' teeth.

Learning how to do that second job well is rather important.

Well since this is just a pie in the sky wish, I'd want increased health insurance since I'm about to take big hit next month and again next year. I haven't had a raise in 5 years but the insurance hit will be huge for me.

It would depend on my age. Face it, vacation isn't a big thing when so many people have sick leave that they use as vacation.

$5,000? Depends on what I'm making! 'Twer I Donald Trump...

Job security is often made through performance. If you use the do as little as you can to not get fired approach to work ethic, then yes, security would be a big thing. Valuable employees usually have job security.

Flexible hours is unbelievably valuable. Again, much depends on the job though.

People getting into 50+ thinking a pay raise is a big thing are short-sighted, same with the pie-in-the-sky job security, though this is all hypothetical anyway. When you realize that medical costs are going to increase nearly daily, your health seldom improves with age and considering everything, for someone in the states to not look at health benefits (not just insurance), well, that's no-brainer AFAIC.

Gosh, I guess I'm the only one who would choose Double the Vacation. You can never have too much time off of work, in my opinion. Especially "paid" time off. LOL
