Special treat on last night's hike (3 pics)

From my hike last night. A lovely, fearless Bobcat.

These are the very first photos out of a new camera that arrived in the mail yesterday, hence the lack of focus. I was just learning the camera when I ran across this Bobcat sitting on the trail about 50 feet ahead of me. He stared me down for a minute or two and then slowly walked off. I had to pass right by the area off trail he headed and when I got to the spot, he was sitting just about ten feet in blending perfectly with the surroundings. Would never had seen him in the bush if I hadn't seen where he entered.

Sounds like some kid whose school cannot afford to teach them about computers, or he would have known where the money is. So sorry this happened to you. What a mess. As Annie said, it is the violation of your personal space as much or even more than the loss of stuff. Of course, if the stuff has personal meaning and is irreplaceable, that is a horrible feeling, too. I had a ring stolen from my house that had been my great aunt's, and I feel sick about it to this day. Good idea to put the bars up, distasteful as they are. We've had a lot of house burglaries around here,including one on my street. Ick.

Guidelines for a cookie exchange? Yeah....no jello jigglers, no pretzel rods dipped into cheap melted chocolate, no pretzel wreaths, no flourescent popcorn balls made with jello, no rice crispie or any other cereal based bars, even if they do have crushed peppermint in them, no haystacks made from chow mein noodles and melted almond bark. I am sure there are more but I can't think of them right now! And yeah...it IS all about presentation. As I learned from funeral lunches (well really I knew ti way before that!) Put a table cloth on the table and some sort of centerpiece,e ven if it's only a pumpkin and some fall leaves and people think it's fabulous! many years ago, a friend and I particiated in a Christmas bazaar where the cost of the space went to charity and the entrance fee from the buyers, and what you sold you got to keep. We were not really into tiny painted birdhouses or dressed dolls etc... what we sold was really pretty lame... On the day of the sale I got there about an hour before Liz and set up the booth...had a frame so I could raise a checked table cloth high so it could be seen....and we were swamped. Liz said when she came all she could see was this great mob around one booth....and lo and behold it was our booth. Presentation...pricing and product. Linda C

I'm sorry! I did take a pic with my phone. I had to email it to myself to post it. I served risotto and spaghetti squash. I wish someone would teach me to make spaghetti squash that doesn't crunch. Dcarch, sorry. I had no plans to make it yesterday. That was DH's choice. Only because I mentioned it! Then we went to Sam's Club, and it was 6:30 before I got started. I made him help. It's rare that I find a recipe that sounds good like that, and doesn't call for garlic, which you could probably add if you want, but it was a nice change to see one that didn't include with my garlic allergy! It is time consuming, but if you like to cook, that won't be a problem. I cook because I have to, and I was already tired with painful feet, so would have liked to have it quicker. The time consuming part is browning off the chicken a couple of pieces at a time, unless you have a huge skillet. I don't. But at least the chicken and risotto was finished at the same time! I made DH help. I gave him the jobs of cutting and pounding the chicken, then stirring the risotto. Mustangs, I'm glad you think I'm a good judge of how good it was! Rosesstink, I don't know. I copied and pasted the recipe as it was on face book. I picked up a 1# box of sliced mushrooms while I was at Sam's and probably used close to a 1/3 of it. Jasdip, I have made chicken marsala once. This was way easier! My bottle of Marsala doesn't say dry, but it doesn't taste real sweet. It's been a long time since I bought it and made the chicken marsala the first time I tried it, so I don't exactly remember. The price sticker on the bottle says, I think, $5.75 USD.

Had our first dog fight last night.

Dog fights, even if just short arguments, are scary... especially between LARGE dogs. Had 2 Rotties years ago... totaled close to 200 lbs. They naturally played very rough.... remember a time when they tipped over the SOFA in play!! Maybe 2-3 times total, one got a little to rough and the other took offense... probably the smaller, BETA dog... I considered myself the alpha;) Same goes for territory as a fighting point. Went to SILs house years ago with a Dobie. They had a shepherd/husky mix and both dogs got along famously. The husky mix had a playful habit of nosing the back of my head... a quick jump and bump. Well, my dog took offense to that for some reason. BUT it wasn't her yard! Brief snarliing and lots of white teeth showing, but they didn't hurt each other. My dog learned it was NOT her yard that day and they never "fought" again>

Linda, not to worry - a bobcat is only slightly larger than an overweight house cat - 20 pounds give or take - and you cannot get close to them.

Back in Missouri (where I'm from), they are common and can sometimes be seen in the treeline of a lake, if you are very lucky. They eat small annimals, such as birds, rodents and rabbits. They won't bother you unless you corner them.

I do hike alone at this wildlife sanctuary if I can't find someone to go with me. It's just a a short distance from my office so is a perfect retreat after a harrowing day. I feel perfectly safe there but carry pepper spray in the event a human animal gets a little aggressive. :-\

This Bobcat showed no fear and sat in front of us (I was there with a neighbor gal) for a couple of minutes before casually getting up and walking into the bushes.

After crossing a small bridge (6 ft or so), my friend and I traveled down a small trail off the main trail only to discover it was a dead-end. When we turned around to head back to the bridge I looked up and the cat was just sitting there ahead of us, right where we had just passed. He was between us and the bridge. My neighbor was *very* nervous even after the cat left the trail. I stopped to peer into the bushes and saw it sitting calmly about 15 feet in, blending perfectly with a log it was sitting in front of.

I hike this area at least twice a week and it was my first Bobcat sighting.

The second one is in focus pretty well. And how neat that you had your new cam with you! Wouldn't you have been sick if you hadn't?

That is exactly what I told my friend, my DH and all my co-workers Joan!

Last night I went on a walk and took photos of three or four Barn Owls as they flew around their base tree near my home. Those photos came out even blurrier, but hey, it was dark out. :-)

He's a gorgeous little fellow! Not aggressive at all.....I had assumed they would be.
Lucky you Jodi! You did great with the new cam, too.
