Almost everyone I know who has been on it has quickly acquired the "cough". It'll show up fairly fast, so when it does you need tobe aware that it is in fact from this med.
I was on it a very short time. I got nausea and heartburn constantly. I got muscle spasms all night long. Then developed a cough. Persistent chest cough. Doc took me off it asap and tried another kind. It took nearly 12 weeks before I was put on the ones I'm on now and the only side effect I have is once in a while if I forget to eat soon after taking evening dose I get heartburn.
I'm on 20mg dosage. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, which works differently than a Beta Blocker(like Toporol). You can get dehydrated on a high dosage.
What you have to watch out for is dehydration. Drink plenty of water. I get the dry cough only when eating, or after. It comes from the fact that ACE inhibitors work with blood vessels themselves, and a tightening of the esophagus is not uncommon...just eat slowly, chew well, and drink a thin liquid when eating.
I've been taking it for six years with no side effects whatsoever, except delightfully low LDL - 47 and good HDL - 54, total cholesterol of 112. Can't complain about that!
I was put on it two years ago as, once in a while my bp goes up but then goes low again. My Mom had a stroke at 62 so I was advised to stay on this for life so that I don't have those spikes. I have to say that I felt much better after a few weeks, my feet never get cold, lol. Yes I've gotten a dry cough now and then when I'm in a situation that I have no liquids but I don't find it enough to stop the med. I don't like MAO inhibitor drugs so this is perfect for me.
Almost everyone I know is on Lisinopril...I guess because it is a generic..I sometimes have that little clearing my throat thing but not too much......no side effects really and the cough isn't a big deal......
Harry's on it along with other BP meds. He's never had the cough mentioned above and I really think he feels better since he's been on it. And his blood test results are better, too.
I've taken 40mg daily of Lisinopril for years and have not been aware of any side effects. I also take a prescribed water pill as part of my high blood pressure treatment; therefore, I'm always thirsty.
When I was bumped up to 20mg, I got the cough-y, clear-my-throat-all-the-time condition. Since I'd always heard of the Lisinopril "cough" only, I stupidly didn't put two and two together for quite some time. I then asked the doctor if I could cut it back down and add a water pill, and this has been working--I'm minus the cough now.
Monica, that info is so interesting! I know I read the side-effect literature, but didn't get so much detail as to cause and effect. Thanks for posting that.
Liljunkr, for future reference may I ask what you take now?
For heavens sake, I don't have a cough really but if I'm not careful I choke on food. I never would have guessed it's this medication that might cause it! I'm on so many meds and always read the literature when I got them but it's been so long ago since I started......... I take 40 mg along with Atenolol. Thank you so much for posting, I will be talking to my doctor.
I have been on this med for two months. I had a pesky little cough for about two weeks. The cough is gone now and there have been no other effects other than my blood pressure is at an acceptable level.
I wish I had checked this board before I went to the doctor this morning!!! I have been taking Lisinopril 12.5 mg since we first came to stay with the kids.Soon after I developed a tickle in my throat and a dry cough.I attributed it to the kid's constantly shedding dog and hair everywhere! (Poor Harley. She gets blamed for everything!LOL) I remember when I first started taking it that a cough was one of the side effects but I guess with everything that has gone on around here I just put it out of my mind.I've been thinking all this time that it was allergy related and discussed it this morning with the doctor.I guess it never crossed either of our minds that it could be a side effect from the medicine! I have to schedule a physical soon so I will discuss it with her then.My DIL has been worried about it more than me but doc did say everything "sounded" good. DH has been taking a larger dose for several years and I haven't noticed anything with him. Thanks Carol for jogging my memory!
METOPROLOL TART 50MG 2X daily and HYDROCHLOROT 12.5mg 1X daily.
We are all different and have to find the balance our body needs. I have a dear friend who is on 4 kinds once or twice or 3 times a day each. I'm not sure I can do that many pills. My throat slams shut after the night meds when I take my multi-vitamin too.
I didn't know that the throat closing/ problem swallowing was part of the Lisinopril side effects. I just assumed it was my aversion to having to take pills with meals causing me to over react.
Metoprolol is generic Toprol...it's a Beta Blocker, and is not interchangeable with Lisinopril....they work differently on different problems. Often, with no obvious indicators as to what is causing high BP, a doctor may first prescribe, say, a beta blocker, and then if it doesn't work, the ACE inhibitor.
I had a new DR at a complete loss, and he described both....caused such bad problems, almost ended up in the ER.
I've been taking it for a while - no problems. I started with hydrochlorothiazide and that caused major problems with my potassium. Tried another one and that caused slow heart rate that adversely impacted my exercise routine - like fatigue and inability to get heart rate up to target levels while exercising. Lisinopril has been good.
I think that is the one Eric has been taking for a few years with no problems. It is on Walmart's $4.00 month list which is helpful if you can take it!
I didn't know the swallowing thing was a possible side effect either.Yesterday when the doctor felt my thyroid and told me to swallow,I couldn't for the life of me! LOL I have been having a little bit of a problem swallowing all my pills but never thought about it having anything to do with the meds.I use to be able to swallow 4 or 5 big ones at a time but not any more.I will talk to the doc about all that when I go back in a couple of months.
