Question for those who use clay cat litter

I use plain clay cat litter, usually from the dollar store. Since I moved the litter boxes upstairs, they get a lot of attention from me. But still, I find it hard to scoop if there's any sort of delay between the cat peeing and me scooping. Because the litter doesn't clump, it flows through my scoop.

I've looked unsuccessfully for a scoop with smaller openings, and now I'm thinking I should find something not designed for cat litter--something like the big ice cream spade I remember owning years ago.

What do you scoop your clay litter with?

Thanks!
