I have my cat's litter box in a cabinet in the laundry room. I have a pet door in the laundry room door and also in the cabinet door. It's really eliminated a lot of the smell and the tracking! It works out great for both me and the cat!

Four cats here and ONE litter box -- so our litter box is currently located in the bathtub in the master bathroom. This spot works SO well for us because I don't use THAT tub because it is too darn cold with the uninsulated walls around it (stupid builders!) If I want a bath -- I use the tub in the guest bathroom! The best things about that location is the litter box is hidden in the tub AND the bathtub is behind the "swing" of the bathroom door!

Always have a large rubber boot tray under the litter box -- really helps! Helps contains litter -- and other things too!

Also -- IF your box has a lid -- you might try removing it for awhile to see if that would help with the peeing problem.

Cats will be VERY upset if their litter box is too dirty -- and will "show-and-tell" you by peeing in less-then-appropriate places ......

Also a dash of catnip in the box sometimes helps a bit too IF you place the box in a new location!

We have not tried an automatic litter box of any kind -- our cats get frightened by noises -- and that is the LAST thing you want with four cats and a single litter box!!

I agree with Jan -- I'm not even tempted by the automatic boxes, because I know it would scare the "poop" (probably quite literally) out of my brood. I have 7 cats, and 4 boxes - 3 of which are in the same room. The other box is in the "kitty senior living apartment", which is the spare bedroom that we close off and allow our elderly cat, Camille (the peeing-outside-the-box offender) to reside most of the time. (Since sequestering her from the young 'uns - no more accidents! Yay!) I have found that you really have to be diligent about cleaning those boxes. I know it's not pleasant, but I truly think that if you're gonna have cats, you've got to just commit to doing the dirty work. :-/

I had a Littermaid once before, and the cat wasn't really scared, just interested when the machine would run. I ended up giving it to another cat owner, though, because it never worked all that well, and it was still a hassle. I know that I really just need to scoop it more, but, I also know that I probably won't. (Hey, at least I'm honest!) If it's out of sight, and it needs to be with 3 kids and a way too open floor plan, then it's out of mind, I get busy, and I forget to scoop it daily. I thought of the master bath, but the layout doesn't work. The laundry room is feasible, but small. I couldn't have an uncovered box there because I know that clothes would end up getting dropped in it. And if I were to put it in a covered box or cabinet in there, I'd still have the "out of sight" issue. So, when I saw this ad, I thought that it could work by eliminating some of those problems. What did you guys think of the catgenie? Too good (and slightly weird) to be true?

Never saw the that box before, I am curious to see if anyone has tried it. I am skeptical of the washable litter. I didnt catch the demensions of the litter box area, but it looks small.

I think it would scare my cat. You might be able to seriously reduce the peeing-outside-the-box issue if you cleaned the box daily: cats can be very fastidious about the cleanliness of their litter box. If I fail to clean mine, my cat will do it: I'll walk in and find that she's thrown her poop out on the floor herself--lol. Needless to say, I'm usually very good about scooping it out at least once/day. Also, some cats don't care for scented litter: we use Everclean Unscented. On another note: My cat scatters litter, too. So I bought a waterhog-type carpet mat to put under the litter box, as well as one of these in "Natural" (see link), and it's really helped.

I tried the littermaid when I had one cat, but it seemed to get quite dirty and ended up for me being more of a pain to clean, and it always needed to be cleaned. The noise of it working was not a problem with our cat at the time.

As for the cat genie, I've seen the ads on tv, and it looks like a great solution for a one-cat household. I would definitely give this product a try, especially if you could put it in the laundry room, rather than right next to a toilet. The website says you can try it risk-free for 90 days, which is great. 90 days should be long enough to figure out if it is messier than stated, and to determine the real cost of ownership.

Another option, since you only have one cat, is to get them potty trained. I've never done this myself, but know people who have.

That would freak out my 2! How long does it take to go through the cleaning and drying process? What happens if kitty needs to "go" during that time?

I moved Hanna & Artie's litterbox into the new laundry room after the remodel. I have noticed that they don't like to go in there if the machines are running, so I've learned to do laundry when they're napping or out on the screened porch. Scooping and sweeping up tracked litter is just part of my daily routine. Makes it nice for all of us.

I have one cat and use the Littermaid. It works pretty well for us. I have it in the garage and the cat has access through a cat-door to the garage from the inside of the house.

I read on another blog a really great litter box idea. They used a basket to put the litter box into. It looked just like a decorative basket from a distance-but it had the litter box inside. Also, she suggested using a spray you can buy at a pet store to help the litter not stick to the sides of the litter box. Great ideas! Also a good rug to use under the litter box basket is the fake grass type. It collects the litter. :) I love GW for all their ideas!:)

I always wondered if they work also. Mine would be afraid. I just have a covered litter box for two cats and i clean it at least twice a day. Let us know how you make out if you get it!

I just moved into a condo and thus am without a basement for the first time. I've successfully placed the litterbox for my two cats in the bathtub of the second bathroom. When guests come I just pull the shower curtain. It works great! Also, someone on one of these forums mentioned the Clevercat litter box. I got one (they are sold at Petsmart) and swear by it. It is a tall rubbermaid type box with a cover with a hole in it. It eliminates about 90% of messy litter because the litter can't fall out the sides like it does in a flat litterbox. I thought my cats wouldn't like going in the hole on top, but they took to it immediately. I really recommend this.

We used to have a Littermaid. Unfortunately, we spent more time unjamming the darn thing than it would have taken to just scoop it. It went back to the store. The store said they get a large number of them returned.

We just have a regular covered box now - a Booda Dome.

We have three covered litter boxes strategically hidden around our house for our three felines. I will admit that I don't scoop every day, as I should. All of mine have doors, which reduces smell and tracking. I also have litter rugs outside each box.

One of ours is hidden in my library, another in our bedroom, and one downstairs in a back hallway. What is interesting is that the cats have a new favorite box every so often - even though they all get scooped at the same time and the same amount of litter.

I took 2 shutters I found at an antique mall...cheap...a few bucks for both and painted them white. I used them as a "screen" with the litter box behind them in my computer room.

A "self-cleaning" box didn't work for Miss Tina. She didn't like the machine and found a way to tear out the wires. It's a wonder that she didn't get a nasty shock.

If kitty has any issues with not using the box, a cover is likely to make things worse. Feline noses are far more sensitive than ours. Imagine how you'd feel about having to eliminate in a space where you had limit options about body position and couldn't flush.

I've had 3 cats with chronic renal insuffiency. Monitoring litterbox content will tell you a lot about the course of the disease. Peeing outside the box may be related to any number of stresser including a dirty box. It can also mean that kitty's health is changing.
