My SF beds have become a giant litter box for my outside cat!!

Up til now, it has not been a problem, since everything in there was mature and she was "careful" where she dug. But now I've been filling in the gaps with fall/winter seedlings that are small and will replace what is there now when the cold comes.

However, my cat has missed the memo and still gets in there. I guess the easiest solution will be to put up some chicken wire stapled around the perimeter? Although in my other garden area, it's surrounded too and that does not deter her. She can jump like a mexican jumping bean.

Any other ideas?

Bird netting? It could float over the tops (maybe a couple of stakes here and there to keep it off the growing plants) and be easily removable. I used that over my spinach/lettuce bed when the birds were eating more then we were. I think your cat wouldn't like getting her paws tangled up in netting.

If EG comes in here and tells you to buy a shotgun, don't listen to him ;-)

Well...it is funny seeing a cat turn flips across the ground from the impact of a 12 gauge.....hmm...Of course, you could just put cayenne pepper on it's front paws, and when it goes to clean itself - it will get the pepper in it's eyes. This usually causes them to claw their own eyes out,and it won't be able to find your sfg again! No? ....hee hee

Really, I'd put up some kind of fence....

Hi, msbee. Yes, the mesh has certainly been a permanent solution for me. The square openings in the mesh are approx. 1/2" in width and the cat's claws get hung up in it, which annoys the heck outta them. They can't dig in it and that's the point...keeping them from digging and then pooping. They're fastidious critters and if they can't dig a hole and then cover up their business, they normally will find another place to go. If you do put mulch over it, don't put too much because that will defeat the purpose..the cats will find a deep mulch just as satisfying to dig in as dirt and they'll poop in your mulch. I barely cover mine with a dusting of pine bark fines, which hides the black colored mesh quite well. The thing is, the cats need enough space to turn around in, dig in, squat in...etc. I have found it is sufficient to only use the mesh in open areas between my plants that are large enough for the cats to comfortably use as potty area...they won't usually get too close to your plants to do their business because the plants brush them and poke them while they're at it, and they don't seem to like that. So try it in the larger open areas of your garden first. This post has become a novella, so I'll stop blabbing now. It's only that I tried unsuccessfully for so long to keep cat poop out of my garden, and I'm thrilled to share something that DOES work. Does anyone want me to post photos? RENEE

I recently trained a now semi feral cat to use the litter box. She had urinated on the bathroom rug but would not use the litter box even though I purchased Cat Attract. I placed the unsoiled portion of the run under the litter box allowing space for her to continue using the rug which I spread with the kitty litter. I did this for 2 days and then cut off and disposed the soiled portion. I then cut the unsoiled portion in half and placed that half inside the box, spreading it with the kitty litter. She then used the run inside the box. On day 4 I disposed of the soiled rug and placed just a small patch of the rug into the box, spreading it with litter. On day 5 I removed the patch and from that day forward she used at all times the kitty litter box. I did not contain her in a closed room because that horrified her. In a total of 7 weeks she went from growling feral outdoor cat to spayed and aborted indoor and outdoor cat, sleeps on my bed, follows me around like a puppy and is very, very sweet.

If you are able to keep her out of your sleep area altogether do so. I had an elderly cat that started peeing in a walkway. I tried everything else and finally placed a litterbox over the spot--which luckily worked. Possibly if you moved your bed away from the area a bit and placed a litterbox right there it would help, but imo this cat has found a way to get your immediate attention with some other aim in mind, such as going outside or being fed. You could also try placing him or her in a crate, with a tiny litterbox into which you place the cleanup materials from his or her recent "accident" to see if that would get the message across, but it has to be done instantly after the transgression. Additionally, if the cat is allowed to go outside, you could give it tasty cat treats each time it signals a desire to go outside to you. It is highly possible that cat has been sending you signals that you have not been picking up on, and it is treating you like Helen Keller was by her teacher. Read up a bit on cat communication strategies and see if that will help.

Actually, she has no sight at all...for years, she had minimal sight but I can tell that it's gone. She bumps into things a lot whereas before, not too much. She doesn't flinch at all when you try to make her blink. I took her to the vets and they ran blood tests and her thyroid levels are too high. They want to increase her meds but one vet wants to confer with the other one on this given her medical history. Another reason I have to keep her separated is when I put her meds in her wet food, if she doesn't eat it right away, one of the other cats will finish off her wet food. I spend quality time with her by keeping the other two out of my bedroom. I pick her up and just hold her in my arms and she purrs so sweetly. They also did chest x-rays because the vet thought her breathing was labored. Turns out her lungs are clear but he said it looks like her heart is enlarged. Waiting for final results on this. When I'm home, I bring her out into the sunroom and I can monitor her but the problem is the other cats sometimes jump on her to initiate play and she will cry out, then I have to rescue her as the other cats do not realize her age and condition. It's really a tough situation but I'm trying to work it out. I have to make sure I'm not neglecting my other 2 cats-:). Here is a pic of my other cats! They have the life-;)

I put the tomato fencing around the bed. My cat could easily have jumped it also, but I think he figured out that there were easier places for him to explore. I read somewhere that two sided tape on the edges of the boxes was a good solve, but we get too much rain for that to have worked for me. It's good to spritz em with water if you actually catch em, but clearly, that won't always work either.

Too many people underestimate the amount of fun you can have with a water pistol and a cat.

Get one of those super soaker ones with the crazy shooting distance. You won't even have to leave your deck chair.

or you could get them clear plastic forks and put them all around in there, she'll get into there a few times and that will be the end of that, handle end down, clear for your convienience. sp. but i guess some say it works wonders. for me, it'd be the painball gun, just for fun!! Hee Hee, or the bbgun!! but then when your not looking they MIGHT be right back there. also they don't like lemon. so you could start out with lemon. and the clear plastic forks. IF it was ME, that's what i'd do. then if they went back in, then the paintball gun. ya that's what it'd be!! just to make hubs happy i'd start out nice!! **onery grinn/wink** LOL ~Medo
