Mismatched socks

My 9-yr old granddaughters almost always wear their socks mismatched. They & their mom went thru the sock drawers recently & tossed out those with holes. Not a problem that there might be 1 good sock. So it works out that fad reinforces recycling.

Is this a fad with girls in your area?

My DD, Molly will be 20 in a couple of weeks and when she is just hanging out around the house or out with her boyfriend her socks almost never match. Now she does wear matched socks to work. It is, for her a funny little rebellion that hurts no one and makes them just a little different. I have seen her unbundle a pair of matched socks and take one & put it on and then grab another sock of a different color and put it on. I don't know about now, since I quit buying her clothes but you used to be able to buy mismatched socks at places like Walmart. It was a brand. They even sold them on QVC because I have bought them. When she was in away at college her socks NEVER matched...partly from the fad and mostly because she hated matching up socks on laundry day...

Personally I think it is cute, their first sign of independance....

Yep, my nieces used to do it when they were younger, years ago. Now that they're in their late teens and early 20's I don't see it as often but they still do from time to time.

Thanks, sbrow, the whole house looks like that around Christmas time, and the yard, too. I didn't think I'd be bringing the plumies in so soon after, but I'm new and learning. There are a lot more plumies there now than in the picture - and I still haven't taken down the Christmas decorations (although the wind just knocked down the 16' movie screen I built outside to play "It's a Wonderful Life" so that you could see it through the windows in the sunroom). Guess it's time to take all the decorations down. Laura, that's funny about the "yard sale". I'll start using that phrase when this happens. My neighbor on one side only had one tree in his entire property. My yard was pretty barren a couple of years ago when I moved in. Suddenly he starts seeing hundred of trees popping up on the other side of his fence - foxtail and traveller's palms and teddy bear palms, black bamboo and Brazilian tower trees (I'm sure he wondered what that was - it looks like something from Jurassic Park) and a big plumeria (the Lani's). He lives next to the tropical side of my yard. I guess I must have inspired him, because he planted the second tree in his property and he called me over, he was so proud. The Lani's does dip partly over to his side, and he was happy about that, I told him I'd show him how to make a lei. So he's used to big things suddenly appearing on my side - although he must of shaken his head about the socks. The cold was supposed to end on Monday, and I took down all the socks and frost cloths. Then I find out here that it's going to last one more night - so I ran out late night and started putting socks back on. I was worried about the other trees that were now uncovered, though. However, as of right now, just about everything seems fine. Only time will tell. I'm a little worried about the Brazilian towers and the traveller's, but hopefully they will be okay. But the inside of my house keeps changing in big ways. The guy I bought palms from is helping a nursery liquidate Kentia Palms (they're closing) and some foxtails, too. But they have to be out of there by February. I bought 4, but there's no way I'm going to put them outside in this freaky winter weather. So I'm going to have some 11-13' houseplants for while, in the tallest part of the house (which is between the living room and dining room). So for a month and a half, till Spring, my sunroom will look like a plumeria jungle and my dining room will look like a tropical restaurant. As long as I don't attract any crocodiles or velociraptors, all is okay. Can't wait to take pics.

I have never posted here before but a recent problem with my washer revealed to me a secret that may be relevant in this situation the lost socks hiding place was inside the shell of my wahser it was eating the socks. the repair man said they slip between the drum and outer shell during washing and you never know unless you take that outer shell off the washer. I was amazed!

Well, he laughed at the Magic Stripe I was using (with navy, medium blue, brown and flecks of ecru) so I ripped out the half I had made and am now making little bootie socks for expected grandson with the yarn. It seems everything for little boys is shown in brown or denim these days, so these socks will work fine for him. I made a round of eyelet holes at the bottom of the ribbing to be able to use ties on the socks so they will stay on. I also had bought some black finer, fingering wool yarn, so I will try that yarn for a pair for DS which he will learn to love, I hope. Solid black will be properly professional looking, and as he has a law internship next semester, he will get more use from the plain black since he will have to dress for work every day.

Too Frugal for anyone?

Roxanne, you are so right that 'stuff happens' and we all need to be prepared for the worst and hoping for the best. Somebody in our area held a seminar on how to interview job seekers. After that, during every interview I was granted, somebody who couldn't come up with anything better would ask me what my five-year plan was. I could never understand what I was expected to say in response. "I plan to have your job"? No, that wouldn't be right.... "I plan to use this job as a springboard for a better job somewhere else"? No, that wouldn't work.... "If you hire me, I plan to still be plodding along in the same job I'm interviewing for today"? That doesn't sound right either. Has anyone ever given what they thought was a satisfactory answer to this question, or have they seen the pointlessness to asking this question in other parts of the country? The last time I was asked, I just flat ran out of patience. I'm sure what I said lost me all chances at the job, but it worked out OK because someone I knew got that job and was unhappy in it in pretty short order. Does anyone, other than someone who works for themselves, really have a five year plan? When you go to work for someone, you are at the mercy of THEIR plan. If you try to develop your own plan they begin to see you as someone who can't stay within their boundaries, and eventually you find yourself unemployed. Nobody knows what's going to happen in five years. Nobody who becomes disabled expected that to happen five years previously. Most people who get a divorce or are widowed expected it five years ago. Many people who get married or have a child were not really planning to do so five years before. And so on. People who tend to spend all their money as soon as they get it say, "You can't take it with you". That may be so, but for every person who has died before they used up all their money there's probably hundreds who found themselves in the opposite predicament. There's nothing more depressing than being old, sick AND poor. Being frugal is a choice I made because I like my security. I know people who have NO savings, they borrow for everything. If they lose their capacity to earn money, they are poor overnight, without food in a couple of weeks, and homeless within a couple of months. Frugality is a chosen way of life. It's an intelligent choice. During 'good times' other people belittle people who are frugal, as if it's a form of selfishness. When in reality, frugal people use less of our planet's resources and make the most of everything they have. Wasting resources is self-indulgent. Throwing money around like there's no tomorrow is poor planning.

I was doing a clean out yesterday and socks were on the list. I have way too many socks. Any that were missing a mate went in the go away pile. I have never worn mismatched socks but I have had some very colorful and unique designs. I still have some fun colors.

Yes my almost 19 year old granddaughter wears mismatched socks. I have even bought her some that were mismatched. Most all the girls at her high school wore socks that way. lol Drove me nuts. But I'm old school and wanted them to match.lol.

It's the pre-teen style right now. My 10-yr. old grandson wears one purple striped sock with a hot pink and red sock. If it is good enough for former Pres. Geo. H. W. Bush, I guess it's fine with me.

When I find a mismatched pair of socks, likely, I have another pair like it.

Alyssa is only 3 and went through a phase of doing that and also mismatched shoes. I have not noticed her doing that now.

Mismatched socks are a lot better than pants sagging and showing boxers. That look just screams low I.Q. IMO.

If the veggies notice mismatches ... they haven't so indicated.

They don't pay attention to holes, either.

One of the squeezy socks, that cost $40.00 each (about $30.00 and something with store loyalty card) developed a small hole in the front, non-elasticized end a while ago, so I had to be careful to put it on the leg where it would be a short distance from the big toe.

Till I darned the hole.

Both of the original pair developed a hole in the non-elasticized heel, and have been darned - I'll be darned if I'll throw out expensive socks due to a small hole (especially in the non-operational part).

Wear a pair of regular socks over them, too ... as I figure that hard shoes'll cause more wear on them than my soft foot and leg.

(and no comments about a soft head, if you please).

I accidentally bought a three-pair bundle of HUE brand support crew socks and LOVE them. I can notice the difference in foot fatigue when I wear these. I try to buy a bunch of the same thing so there's less 'matching' to do after I wash. (DH's long dress socks in deep navy and black are real eye tests to match!)

I just noticed at work a package of sneaker sock that had 12 socks and none of them matched.
