Do people dress up for shows on Broadway?

We're planning a trip to NYC in September. I want to see The Lion King. Do people dress up? I don't want to pack something I'm just going to wear once.

Well, this is from someone from an older generation, but it seems people don't dress up for anything any more. I think its a shame, but what I would suggest, is wear what ever you are comfortable in. I'm sure you will see people in everything there from shorts(depending on weather) to minks and pearls. Have a great time. It sounds wonderful. Dottie

My DD lives in Manhattan so I go often. I have seen people dressed in everything from jeans to formal clothes.

We signed a simple contract (no fancy company form) with a plumber. They did not show up, nor called until I called them. They said they will show up some other day, not sure when. A long story short - they rescheduled, but seemed uncooperative after I wanted a county inspector to inspect their work (after they would be done in the future) and after I asked them to pull a work permit. They seem not to be licensed with Residential Builder's Commission. Now they told me I must wait nearly 2 months to get my money back as they say they already bought the materials for the advance payment that I paid them. I said it's ok to refund part money and part materials for the job, but they still unhappy and they now told me the plumber went to a hospital for 1 month. I think they are liars and they just trying to keep my oney, but they don't realize how big of the trouble they got themselves into since I'm gonna file a complaint of unlicensed contractor to the State Investigations and Enforcement commission etc. I guess I hit the scammers yet again... but I know what to do: report them, they get fined, cease and desist and prison time, then sue them in Small Claims Court and go to the end until their property gets sold and I get compensated. The money they got from me is over $1000 (for buying materials). I also will write and post my story in the forums and on a blog, so their plumbing company gets really damaged and hopefully they will not get much business anymore. Once I go after someone, it's for life. Any additional suggestions or experiences?

As said before, form follows function. Couple tips: Do your feet get cold easily? Mine don't so I don't have an issue there, but my feet do sweat easily so I have to "dress down" on the foot warmers and put heavier stuff on the body. If your feet feel chilly, wiggle your toes a lot. Sounds silly but the friction and circulation will help warm your feet and increase circulation. If you do feel chilly, stand up. It makes the heat go through the body rather than vent out the horizontal planes of your legs or more if you lie down. The increased calorie consumption produces more heat, plus, warm air rises in the body too, hence the known importance of keeping your head covered and insulated since the heat rises out of the top of your head. But your shoulders are often overlooked. Heat also leaves from the top of your shoulders. I've frozen my hands several times, last time was second degree so my hands are very sensitive now in cold weather. Even cold water running on them can occasionally be very uncomfortable. Here's someone who says layers=comfort. Also, you don't need dedicated outer wear. Things like flannel lounging pants fit under jeans nicely, or sweatpants will go over them. The old "winter woolies" as I call them, aka long underwear, union suits, etc are great, but again, if you get warm, regulate the temp. Don't overheat or you'll freeze easily. This can be a problem when you go inside. With top layers, they come off easily, but if you go into 70Â°-80Â° temps and have long underwear under several layers, you'll overheat, sweat and damp clothes are COLD clothes. You may need to change socks or underclothes if you do sweat. The biggest thing is to use common sense. If you get cold, go inside or get more clothes. Eat well. You will likely burn more calories cranking out more heat. Stay hydrated. Never thought I'd be one to say this, but it is true, avoid alcohol in cold weather. It doesn't warm you up in reality, it can cool you down. (Hence a cold beer on a hot day!! LOL) Warm beverages rather than hot are also better. And believe it or not, your state of mind will make a difference. If you think you'll get cold, you will. Not thinking about it will help. Extremities are the first things to freeze of course, so watch your fingers, toes, hands, feet and yes, your nose and ears.

Isn't it a law or something they have to be late? And dress for the part...what's that? For us, living in a small community has its benefits when service people are involved. Poor work usually means they DON'T get business just by word of mouth. On the other hand it may take quite a bit of time before a good service person is available. It took all winter for the furnace to be put in but they did a fine job, we are pleased. If we have an emergency, they are here fairly fast. It's to bad the septic service didn't work out. An hour in your case was a pain in the butt but an hour isn't so bad considering the job they are doing. If you were their first service job though, I would say you had every right to be upset. I still wonder, could the traffic be a problem or cell service? Were they behind in a prior job? I think it would be good if you and this company, if they could negotiate a time better for both of you. You mention going to the doctor. How many of us have sat and waited for them? I know I have.

I like the plant there, but I don't think you really need anything else. To my eye, the clock balances out the plant. I originally thought a basket or pottery jug might work, but I think it would compete with the clock and risk looking cluttered. However, if you feel you need something else to personalize the space and add a pop of color, a long, low profile sign might work, probably propped up on a plate stand or something. I think I'd try to avoid anything tall enough to obscure the trim, though. Maybe cut out paper to get a visual on what size works, then find an etsy seller who does custom work if you don't find anything you like. I've only been to Broadway matinees and people have been dressed very casually.

People don't dress up much. I went to a Broadway matinee on Saturday and sat next to a man wearing shorts and there were a lot of jeans (as there always is in the city). I would say that I dress sort of "nice casual" - for me that is a pair of khakis (which I wear almost every day of my life, LOL) and a nice cotton tee shirt - a nice necklace and I feel dressed for anything! The Lion King is just beautiful, enjoy!

I've been to Broadway plays in NY. People don't go formal or even informal. People looked like they tried to "dress up" wearing their nicest outfits, even if that meant nice jeans and a sweater on a guy, and a nice dress or capris on a gal. Some men might be in suits if they are older. People dressed the way you would see someone dressed going out to a nice restaurant or what one one would wear to attend a wedding these days, and that might just mean a cotton sundress.

I have noticed in my city when attending the ballet, that even though no one wears floor length dresses with tiny evening bags any more like in decades past, that people do dress up their kids to the max if they bring them.

I don't know if it is because the choice out of the closet is either backyard playwear, school uniform, or the Easter/Chirstmas outfit hanging in there, and they choose the holiday outfit of course, or if they buy the frilly outfits for the kids so that the kids know that the outing to the ballet is a "special event" and dressing in a velvet and lace pinafore with patent leather MaryJanes and tights, seems to put the kids on better behavior with their best manners when dressed up.

My rule of thumb when traveling, is that wearing an outfit in all black, will always seem more 'dressed up' for any dressy event. Maybe add a nice piece of jewelry and you will blend right in. A nice black top, or nice black skirt or capris, can be worn separately at other times with other colorful separates during the vacation, and you won't have to lug a black dress along that will only be worn once.

i wouldn't take anything you can't get double duty out of...

dilly dally has the right idea though...mono colors alway a good thing...sept is such an iffy month, too..you can't tell if it's sweater or tank top time...
