Photo Essay: Baby Joey's birthday party

Baby Joey turned one year old last week, and we held a family BBQ in his honor. As you will see, a good time was had by the birthday boy!

"For me?? Thank you, Mom!!"

"Mmmm......this is good."

"Uncle Chuck, what are you doing??"

"Really, Uncle Chuck? I can eat this all by myself?"

"Well, I'll have a little just to be polite."

"What happened to my hands?"

"Not to mention the rest of me!"

"Oops--how did those pieces end up down there?"

"Mom got me all cleaned up so I could try out my new swing with Uncle Don." (Yes, that's really his uncle.)

"And I love my new wagon too!!"

Did you have two cakes? One for Joey (to touch and destroy) , another for the guests. It's the rage where I live, Long Island NY. I can't wait for a grandchild, I love baking! Actually, I can wait. Neither of my daughters is married.

Mom is still tired from the party, but thrilled she got presents, something we did not ask for or expect. Her Danish side of the family only really celebrates the _5 and _0 year birthdays after a certain age. My parents were 10 years apart but Dads birthday was in September. Growing up poor and in and out of an orphanage, he LOVED his birthday so his was the one that usually got celebrated. Often we flew back to Denmark for my Grandmothers birthdays and big parties in October. So by the time Mom's came around, she was over it. I don't remember her ever having a real party for her birthday. I should tell the other part of the story about the friend with the rose I rooted. Gean kindly is sending me a couple of cuttings of wish list roses and had an early ht that is not happy in her climate. So when I showed the cutting with the bud to moms friend she was excited and had questions. Then I told her about this early HT, when I told her the name her eyes lit up and she said "A rose named after me!" Betty is a very sweet lady and never has a mean thing to say. It was so cute to see her light up like that. (she is moms age too) About the camellia, I am not sure I have noticed seed pods...have to admit I have not paid much attention to the plants but I guess I will have to look closer. I liked that Betty's cutting was already in bloom. Small flower, maybe 2" white to pink in the center. And while talking of lighting up....as I gave a group the grand tour of the garden (including the pastor and his wife)....the fabulous neighbors next door were sitting on their balcony...lighting up. Boy I need some more TALL fast growing highly scented roses! lol

Betty, I LOVE the pink tablecloth in your tea setting. If you hadn't told us, I wouldn't have known it was plastic. It is such a pretty colour and goes so well with your beautiful dishes. What I find particularly appealing (besides sweet Hanna and the yummy food!) are the candlestick holders you used...I love candles of all sorts and those are great. Are they crystal? Thanks for keeping this post going, it's a good one! DD

When my mother turned 70, we gave her a surprise party and wrote and performed a little musical of her life. She definitely loved that! But our family is into stuff like that. Yours may be more into art, writing, etc. For my 50th birthday, my husband contacted everyone he could think of and asked them to contribute a little anecdote for an album. He put photos in the back. I adore it. I recently did a "this is your life" slide show for a party honoring someone. Her family gave me photos. But in addition to the real photos from her life, we put in lots of downloaded photos with her face photoshopped in (always the same photo of her face, and always just a little too large). For example, when the narration was about her meeting and marrying her husband, there were a few of the two of them together, and then her with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Homer Simpson, King Kong ... etc. It was really funny to think of things; she is a VERY refined and elegant lady, and we had her getting a tattoo, pole dancing, in a motorcycle gang, on a Tabloid cover, in the Sopranos -- like that. What made it funny was that we kept the narration perfectly straight and played very formal music behind it. It was very well received, and the guest of honor loved it. Do you think your mom might like something like one of these ideas? I, too, think I would prefer something like that to making the guests play games. I think it is so nice of you to make a party for your mother. You don't need to "program" every minute with games, though -- your mom's friends will enjoy socializing with each other.

Yes, his mom made two cakes--actually three: a blueberry one for the baby with healthier ingredients and chocolate and vanilla layer cakes for the guests.

My daughter and her husband gave him the wagon. He rode over to my house (pulled by his mom) in it yesterday.

I think there's a hint of curls in his hair. Both his parents have wavy hair, and I do too.
