I wanted y'all to see my reply of yesterday to my original post..wanted you to know and wanted to thank you, too.

...........Oh my y'all...I just got back to the puter today and am surprised to see just how many of our lives have been touched by suicide...so very sad and my heart goes out to each one.

I appreciate reading your replies and the sharing of your thoughts, and experiences.

BTW, when I was with the family yesterday, I was told Steve was happy and planning a big hunt on his ranch with his usual hunting buddies. Within 2 hours of making calls and emails to verify the plans, he was gone. :(

From my 'own experience' - something snapped in his head. When I am at my worst no one knows because I try to be happy and appear happy and normal, but inside it's turmoil, emotional roller coaster. You don't want to hurt your family, cause them to worry but when things snap you don't see/hear any of that in your head. I felt ultimately that I just didn't want to be here anymore - I had enough.

Enough.

That's my personal experience with a close call. It's hard to understand if you've never suffered from mental illness. It's a part of you that's unwell and in pain.

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. It's a learning experience for me to thinking about the after effect on everyone.

I didn't reply to the original post, but I have also experienced the loss of a good friend to suicide. It's hard---there are never any real answers. But it does get easier with time.

Daisy: Since own-root roses are small, I move them around a lot and observe their roots. OWN-ROOT W.S. 2000 has thinner roots & more cluster roots thus need a fluffy medium to push through. In contrast, Comte de Chambord has long woody sticks, not much cluster roots, and cannot handle tons of acidic rain resulting in black spots. Hard woody roots need hard-minerals in clay to form. W.S. 2000 as own-root has PALE and small leaves. Small leaves mean it needs fluffy or sandy soil, and pale leaves mean it blooms best with acidic rain. It refused to bloom with my alkaline tap water at pH 9. In contrast, DARK-GREEN leaves like Dee-lish, Intrigue, Liv Tyler, Arthur Bell, Double Delight, Firefighter or Evelyn bloom easily with pH 9 tap-water. Dark-green leaves are also prone to black spots during acidic rain .. while the very pale leaves like own-root W.S. 2000 never have black spots, even with tons of acidic rain. Sharifa Asma also has pale leaves as own-root and I never see blackspots on that one. pH of rain here is 4.5. First pic. is own-root W.S. 2000 in my amended clay (note the pale and tiny leaves). Second pic. is Sharifa Asma (gets rain water from my 6 rain-barrels so leaves are darker green). But own-root Sharifa Asma was very pale with alkaline tap water at pH 9. Own-root Carding Mill also has pale leaves and refused to grow with alkaline tap water. Light-green or pale leaves are BEST AS GRAFTED. I wish I had bought Sharifa as grafted. See own-root W.S. 2000 below: Own-root Sharifa Asma below: All my 134 varieties are own-roots, and Facebook Fragrant Rose Lovers (founded by Khalid) helps me in choosing dark-green and large-leaves for my alkaline & dense clay. Khalid urges his 1,800 international members to post bush-shots where leaves and growth can be seen. When I want an own-root rose suitable for my rock-hard clay, I search inside that Facebook group for "dark green leaves" or "large leaves". These rosarians always post bush-shots plus detailed description of each rose (lineage & types of leaves). The info. is more accurate than HMF since they post many bush-shots in different weather (above 110 F, or month-long rain, or in sandy soil, or pots, plus bush-shot videos of rose so I can see what type of soil they have). Hi Richard, Your story really moves me. I lost a very dear friend pretty much the same way three years ago. He was a lot like Andy, I think. It devastated me for some time, and I think of him a lot. One thing I noticed is that I've absorbed so much from him, the stuff I learned from him, and like jy la 02 says, I am carrying him around with me. It's almost like I'm having one of those seemingly endless conversations with him again sometimes. I wish there was a way I could play back his voice, the things he said through the gazillion hours of conversation we had. But, bummer that it is, you can't save people sometimes. I hate that part of it so much. I took a while, but thinking of him now feels good, as it has been long enough that my mind and my heart has made the adjustment. I think it will be that way with you and your dear friend Andy too. My friend was a tortured soul, and he hurt easily and too much, and he was also smart, witty as hell, knew how to have fun and loved getting to know people. Wow, I just thank the stars for having had the privilege of knowing him for as long as I did. He's a part of me and I am proud that I was one of his closest friends. He was a letter writer, would write from various parts of the globe. What I did after he left us was, once in a while, pull out one of those tattered envelopes, unfold and read the letter he obviously put a lot of time and love into. Depends on the person maybe, but I know even when it made me cry it also brought joy. I wish you the best. I can tell that you are a wonderful person to have had a friend like that.

My darling husband passed away 15 days ago. We knew each other for 8 years. He was very vibrant and full of life, had a good job house and car. Internally though he was suffering from chronic depression and was addicted to alcohol for many years even before i knew him. It got worse when he lost his mother 3 years ago. He would constantly talk about killing himself, praying that God would take his life. It was like seeing him die everyday. I prayed that he comes out of his depression, went to the psychiatrist to get meds for him, put him in rehab, gave him unconditional love but nothing seemed to work. He stopped eating and would just drink and watch the tv the whole day and night. Any attempt at communication was met with silence. He did not want to talk about anything. He gradually became so weak that he was bed ridden. I would coax him to eat or at least have some soup or juice but it was an uphill task. 3 years and 10 hospitalizations later he is no more. His body and organs were so weak that it could not process any medicines. I just wish that he would be alive today maybe he would have made an effort at living. People tell me that he is free from his worries and depression. I hope he is finally at peace. People say that your love was one sided but i know that he loved me and needed me. He would feel more depressed when i was not around him. I would call him my sunflower. In the end i feel he could not help himself. I miss my darling a lot.

Our daughter committed suicide 10 January, 2007. She had attemptes on 2 different occassions, but failed. She had nerve problems for several years and was under medical care. She leaves 2 sons, ages 6 and 10 who miss her very much. On 2 May, 2004 we lost our son to Lung Cancer. He and our daughter were very close, and our daughter took his death very hard. She hid this from her father and I. She would drive to the cemetery at night and sit at his grave for hours and talk to her brother. Her X husband didn't tell us about this until after she died. If he had maybe we could have taken her to the right dr. The anniversary of her death is near. I know it has only been 1 year, but sometimes when the phone rings, I get really excited and just know it is her calling me. I can tell you, the hurting dosen't ease up. She was not only our only daughter, but my best friend, and I need to talk to her.

Wait. If he was happy and making plans two hours before, how can you know for sure it was a suicide? Could it be accident a well-staged murder?

I've heard that if someone is really depressed and then all of a sudden is very happy, it could be a sign that they have decided to end their life.

I didn't respond to your earlier post because it really brought back memories for me. One of my best friends suicided by jumping off of a 4 story building. It was a time when I was fighting for my life with cancer and I remember how angry I felt that she could just kill herself. I had a real mixture of emotions and wonder to this day what could have been so bad, that she did this.

My heart goes out to you and his family.

I too think it's sad that so many have been touched by a suicide. A neighbor shot himself while his wife & 5 children were away from the house. It's been almost 20 years and the family is still bewildered about why.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend.

You never know what lies behind a smile.
I've never known anyone personally who commited suicide, but...
As I commented once to my sister, who was in shock after reading in the newspaper that her long time friend, and dentist, had just commited suicide while on a vacation:

I think that what we all will never understand is the depth of their sadness or inner fight. You know... I certainly have been really depressed, but so thankful that something stopped my depression before I got that bad. I know when I was diagnosed with depression the first time, most people were baffled, as I would never leave the house without a smile.

Thank goodness each of us has never gotten there. Again, I am so sorry!
