1. Barbecue- do you like a dry rub or sauce? Dry rub, with a tiny bit of brushed on sauce.

2. Favorite grilled vegetable? Onions

3. Sparklers- love 'em, hate 'em or don't care? Don't care. Just have a bucket with water in it near by for the hot ones. I remember stepping on them in the dark when I was little.

4. Ever had homemade ice cream? If not, what's your favorite festive 4th dessert? Yes

5. Does your city/town have a fireworks display? A parade? Yes, not a parade that I know of. Our bigger celebration follows in a couple of weeks. John C. Fremont Days

6. Do you spend time on the water (lake, river, ocean, etc) or pool for the 4th? You bet. At the river. Packing stuff to leave now, but had to check in here first.

7. What do you love most about our country? Freedom of religion.

We're just outside Kansas City ... every town around has a display and we can see many of them from our house

7. What do you love most about our country? how we try to do what's right

Whew,...I'm back! Yes, Erica, your "Woo Hoo!" package definitely arrived,...like, I think, 4 days ago. We went to the wedding of some special neighbor friends of ours on the 1st, having the previous afternoon ordered a few select gifts for them from their registry at Bed Bath and Beyond. Thanks totally for all the great seeds (thanks to everyone involved, actually) and wonderful, fun extras! Wow! Like I said, above, "Woo Hoo!" - Also, I should add that I have been having trouble accessing the Internet for the past couple days. Called Charter Communications this afternoon and their automated trouble shooting service helped me set things straight, so,...I'm back, finally. Turned out it was a fixable modem malfunction. - Such lovely weather and other atmospheric gifts we've been blessed with, lately. Not only has it been humid and hot recently, but now we're capped by the smoke of an 8,500 acre fire nowhere near far enough north of here. The smokey air outside is nearly impossible to breathe most of the time, except for Saturday, thank God, for Dave & Linda's wedding. Believe me, I did some heavy praying that morning. While it remained basically hot, the smoke let up a lot. Yesterday and today, though, it's back in full force. Stouts Fire

Anyone's feelings for "The country" and any patriotism about it should be unaffected by the doings or positions of any temporary politician/office holder. The country is diverse and is the same from year to year, no matter who's in office and no matter what the government does or doesn't do. If you love the country, you should also respect the diversity of views (without needing to agree with them). That's a concept many don't understand or want to deal with. The frequency of Americans' overt expressions of patriotism, along with the same of overt religiousity, are two things about the US that many Europeans find puzzling. Most people around the world (other than political dissidents, and often even them) have affection and pride for their countries, they just don't feel the need to express them publicly or as frequently as Americans do. The flag represents everyone and every point of view, not just one's particularly favorite position.

We live on a large lake year round and fly both a US flag and an Earth flag at all times. We also have a rainbow flag, the Jolly Rodger, several state flags and Tibetian prayer flags that are flown at various times, depending on the weather and my ambition level. Despite being a progressive, leftie super liberal who holds disgust and hate in my heart for many of the US elected officials, I believe in the US and believe we as a nation could (and should) do much better in terms of how we treat the rest of the world, women, LGBTQ persons, minorities, the poor, immigrants and prisoners (to name a few), I keep going back to what my late father always said "Our system is flawed, but it's the best there is, and only the laziness of our citizens will cause it to fail". Personally I think a few more Scandanavian principles would be in order, but overall, I have to agree with him, take marriage equality, which only a few years ago seemed far from our grasp, now is the law of the land. And that's why I fly the flag.

1. Barbecue- do you like a dry rub or sauce? I like whatever someone serves me. My son and daughter are the grillers.

2. Favorite grilled vegetable? zucchini

3. Sparklers- love 'em, hate 'em or don't care? I can't remember the last time I thought about sparklers, so it must be "don't care."

4. Ever had homemade ice cream? If not, what's your favorite festive 4th dessert? We used to make ice cream, and it was wonderful. But that was a long time ago. No more ice cream for me!

5. Does your city/town have a fireworks display? A parade? The various townships and lakes have their individual fireworks. When we had a boat we always took it out on the big lake on the night of the display.

6. Do you spend time on the water (lake, river, ocean, etc) or pool for the 4th? My daughter has a lake house, and that's where I'll be watching fireworks this year, if we don't get rained out.

Haven't had any since my daughter was little but when I was a kid, I loved them. That was the only fireworks my parents or I ever bought.

4. Ever had homemade ice cream? If not, what's your favorite festive 4th dessert?
Yes, I've had homemade ice cream, and some people are really
good at making it. My favorite 4th dessert would be watermelon.

5. Does your city/town have a fireworks display? A parade?
Actually, my tiny little town is having a parade and a pot luck dinner. A nearby town has a fireworks display, as do all the towns around here.

6. Do you spend time on the water (lake, river, ocean, etc) or pool for the 4th?
Yes, but only because I live year round on a bayou. It is about 100' across...and I love it but I don't fish, boat or do anything except feed the fish and the alligator.

7. What do you love most about our country?
Freedom.

3. Sparklers- love 'em, hate 'em or don't care? Loved them when I was a kid. Now I don't care

4. Ever had homemade ice cream? If not, what's your favorite festive 4th dessert? Yes, I still have the old crank, but haven't used it in years. Watermelon is my favorite July 4th dessert

Freedom...and the young people who fight to help us keep it
