Take a trip with your grandchild, no matter how big or small, big bucks or small bucks!

It is so rewarding and memories will last forever and ever~

Had minor "bumps", of course, with a teenager, but the memories overcome those.

Do it!

So thankful for the memories!

You can teach old dogs new tricks. Rather than telling her (she probably doesnÂt listen or believe), you need to take action. Some negative (and positive) reinforcement might work. YouÂll probably need to explain the "program" to your children so they arenÂt caught by surprise, but IÂm sure the visits arenÂt very pleasant for them either. First off, don't explain what you've been doing or why you haven't returned her calls; that is just playing into her bad behavior. You don't owe her an explanation. When you return her call, say that you got her message and are returning her call, ask, cheerfully, how she is doing. When she starts her yelling, tell her that you love her but you won't tolerate this behavior, it's rude and disrespectful to you and your family. Tell her that you will have to go now, politely say good-bye and hang up (sheÂll still be yelling and wonÂt hear you and think you hung up on her, but youÂll know you didnÂt). When you visit, quickly greet her with a hug and a kiss, and when she starts the yelling and the negative comments put your hand up (stop) and tell her that you love her, but can't tolerate this behavior - it's hurtful and disrespectful to you and your family, and tell her you are leaving now. Then pack up and go. Of course she'll escalate, screaming to everyone about how you treat her with such disrespect, but others probably know how she behaves. Whether they believe her or not, itÂs not your problem, you are only responsible for your behavior. If necessary, you can explain that you wonÂt tolerate her rude, disrespectful behavior any more, and have to set limits on visits and phone calls, for that reason. On the off chance that she actually starts quieting down, even for short periods before she launches her attacks, reward that behavior quickly with a hug and a "love you". The better she behaves, the more positive reinforcement you can give her. Eventually, you hope, all the visits and phone calls will be pleasant for everyone, and that will be itÂs own reward!? We do this with our kids, reward positive behavior, ignore negative behavior, and it works. ItÂs when we reward the negative behavior, with explanations, excuses, apologies, attention of any kind, that we give the other person control over us. If her behavior just doesnÂt change, and it might not, especially if sheÂs having some age related changes, keep the visits to a minimum, especially with the kids, keep the phone calls short and delete her messages quickly, so the kids donÂt hear them. You might explain that granny is getting old and canÂt stop her unpleasant behavior and try and find some good memories for them. I had a childhood friend whose grandmother a very, very nasty woman. She finally had to go into a nursing home. Of course, her behavior got worse. I'm convinced that the staff "did her in" one night, and did everyone a favor!!! Good luck.

thank you so much! I called Anni`s Annuals, but they didn`t have any. When they have them, they are the one gallon size, and they don`t ship them and I live in Nevada. Then I called Rogue Valley Roses, and they are also out, but plan on having some bare root Grandmother`s Hat in the fall. So now I am on their list to get one. I am glad to hear they root easily. I might try rooting one, if and when I get it. So thanks again.

palms lose a set of fronds every year ... if that is the right word .. frond ... it cyclical.. annual.. and normal ... once you see a new shoot developing.. it might be time to cut off the worst of this lot ... but not all at once ... did you move it to a new house?? ... if so.. its stressed due to all the cultural variables being changed.. light.. heat/temp.. you watering different than grandma .... etc .... i also wonder about when was the last time it was repotted into fresh soil .... see whats going on IN THE POT ... too often we over react to what we see.. and the problem is the part we cant see ... [i have experience with the bugt issue embo mentions] potting media is a water management system .... and it wears out ... leading to watering problems ... which leads to stress .. which leads to what we are looking at ... we had a houseplant palm for 20 years ..... no clue if it was this one ... but we kept it rather dry .. so if you are watering it.. and keeping it wet ... there might be a base issue ... there is a houseplant forum.. and you might get a lot of guidance there.. on how to care for it ... [and looking above.. i see you covered that] .... and probably also a palm forum ... but i dont have time to check that ... good luck. and try not to love it to death ... ken

100+ year old bedroom set inherited from Grandmother

The bed and the armoire are fabulous. The dresser needs major rehab. The market for old, broken furniture is not great. As far as I can see, the everything visible about the bed is fine. You can strengthen it by nailing additional wood to the bottom. We beefed up the support of one of our beds. If you look under the bed, you can see the pale pine additions to the dark wood frame. But who crawls under the bed to look at the framing?

You are absolutely right. Right now life with my 13 yr old granddaughter is somewhat stressful, this will pass I pray.

I take a 10-day vacation with my young Grandsons every summer. This year, we are going to Las Vegas, then to Disney Land and Kansas City, Missouri - we are so excited!

My husband's brother's mother in law took her 2 Grandsons on a trip to Italy when they were young teenagers. They had a wonderful time. I'm not yet a Grandmother, but I'll remember your advice!

I totally agree. I was fortunate enough to travel to the UK twice with my grandmother (mom's mom)- 1994 and 1997. In 1997, my cousin was also there and we had CHEAP Brit rail tickets so we traveled to Scotland and Ireland. Each time was only a week (cousin was there the full month the rail pass was good) but I will always cherish the memories.

Now I could have picked a better time for my cousin to come out of the closet to my grandmother than while were were on a 3 hour train ride in a foreign country but it turned out pretty well- she wasn't surprise but I was not sure how she would take it!

The only picture albums I still have are my scrapbooks from those trips- all other pictures have been scanned.

My grandmother and I never took a trip together, but I was fortunate to live very close to her. I spent most of my childhood and teenage years hanging out with her. I miss her greatly, but have so many wonderful memories with her. In my eyes she was perfect.

My grandparents took me on many vacations when I was school age, through HS.
Those memories are precious, and we intend that our granddaughter will also have such memories.

Never too a trip with grandparents but did spend several summers on the ranch, learning to milk cows, take care of many many chickens, candling eggs to sell, making real butter to sell, picking fruit, etc all that fun stuff. Other GM lived in AZ right near the RR yards and very close to the Apache Reservation. Also lots of Navajo and Hopi in the area. Great fun and so many memories.

We took our teenage grandson with us to Reno "Hot August Nights' a big week long car show and cruise.Took granddaughter for a week long vacation at a timeshare to the Oregon Coast. Great Memories were made!!

Glenda, for the past 25 or 26 years one of my dear clients took each of her grandchildren on a trip for their 13th birthday. This year is the last of them. She has taken them to Italy, Russia, China, Peru, British Isles, Alaska and this year, a canal cruise. She is now 92 and a chapter will close, but what a wonderful gift she gave them all. She wanted to teach them to reach out of their everyday life and experience another culture.

My grandparents were not able to take me traveling, but they shared their time with me, unconditionally. Same thing, different setting. The lessons were still learned.
