Thanks, everyone for you nice compliments! DS is in NYC already....has been a week and will be there two more weeks. Then he will go back to Tokyo to help finish up things there. They will be leaving Tokyo very early August. I am happy for me they are moving back but sad for DDIL and the kids. They will be so far away from both sets of grandparents. DS works for Citibank.....does something with computer soft ware and somehow manages the big portfolios for Japanese clients. He did work for Merrill Lynch for a long time but Citibank lured him away. Just in the nick of time. Jake's third birthday is August 3rd......first birthday in NYC, 2nd birthday in Tokyo and not sure where he will celebrate his third. They could have moved to Hong Kong....glad they chose NYC.

Yes. In addition you should head the main trunk just a few inches above where you want all the new scaffold branches to form. Envision how you want the tree to look in 5-10 years. Where do you want all the lowest scaffold branches? Most people will say "about 3 feet from the ground". So head the tree at about 36-40 inches. This should result in 3 to 5 big scaffold branches plus a central leader if you want one. The root system can handle the whacking. The tree will be severely out of balance with a large root system but no branches, so this imbalance will force many new vigorous branches to grow this season. Keep the scaffold branches trained to about a 45 degree angle, that will give them strength.

Looks like depending on specific pollinator - the blossomscan maximize their scent emission at a certain time - and if it is some night moth or bat - makes sense to concentrate the resources on the time when this pollinator is active. I never could smell Paliavana prasinata - it bloomed for me several times. It is pollinated by bats and supposed to have a strong odor... I guess I slept instead of flying around in a dark. Another gesneriad - Nematanthus albus - bloomed nicely for me in a front room - but since the humidity upstairs is not that high I never registered it. Now I moved to the basement - where the humidity is 60% with all the plants... and the smell of dirty socks just knocks you off when this lovey plant blooms - another bat pollinated species.
