Why can't men follow directions?

You may recall DH had surgery on June 16th to have a defibrillator put in. Well, they told him not to raise his left arm, even gave him a sling to wear. Well, he has managed to pull at least one of the leads out of place and is going to have to have it put back tomorrow. Yep, gotta open that incision. The machine kept zapping him and it had an alarm that kept going off. Not pleasant at 3:30 am. It's been turned off until he gets it fixed. I guess I am going to have to duck tape his arm to his body.

men will be men which means little boys who doesnt listen to anything at all..especially women...who are always right! lol boy im going to get it now! actually this isnt funny and im not making light of youre situation..so ill apologize before i send this, but still women are always right!

Aw it's awful when you don't feel comfortable with the cut you get. You're doing everything right. It's taken me a long time to find someone I trust, and even now sometimes when she tries something new I may not feel right with it until it grows out a bit. They never blow it dry quite the way I can, and it just looks and feels awful when they do it. In the summer I run back home with my hair wet to style it myself! Anyway, the cut is good, and here's what I've done. Bring a few pictures you like, preferably of someone with your similar shape face and hair texture. Then just talk for a while with your stylist about what you like about the cut(s) AND what you DON'T like about some of them. I will bring some pics of women with slight layers that I like and say I love how this looks here, but here is a similar pic with shorter layers and I hate how it looks over her ears, the inversion in the back wedge is too severe for my liking, etc. This will help your stylist to see what you are shooting for. Then she will talk to you about what she thinks is correct for your face and show with her hands how short or where the layering will start or why, etc. Good luck! I think they KEY is to show what you like AND what you do not like.

My BF and I probably took the non-traditional/less recommended approach of introducing his son to me almost immediately. I met his 6 year old son on our 3rd "date" which was really just hanging out at his house watching a movie and playing legos with his son. I refused to spend the night there for about 6 months, and when I finally did, I asked him to speak with his son about it when I wasn't around to make sure that he was really ok with his dad having someone stay over. Yeah, he's 6, so he probably isn't totally sure of what's going on, but considering his mother moved in with someone she barely knew, he seemed to be ok with the idea that I would be there from time to time. In hindsight, it's actully been really great for our relationship. I've never known by BF without his son. It wasn't like we dated as a "single" couple for 6 months or a year and then suddenly had this 3rd party introduced into things. His son now asks for me to stay over when I visit. My BF has primary custody and very few babysitting resources. If I didn't meet his son early on, there's no way we could have continued to date. I also have a really great relationship with his son and have now moved on to spending more time there and doing some of the day care drop offs and pick ups. A caveat - we are talking of moving in together in a few months and getting married in about a year. If at any point I wasn't sure about the relationship, I wouldn't have started sleeping over and getting involved in some of the parenting decisions (the bio mom doesn't really care to know much about her sons actual upbringing - she just wants to babysit when it makes her feel good). At this point, if your BF's son is aware that he is dating someone, the son is already forming ideas about you that you can't control. You might be the "wicked stepmother" in his mind, or the woman who always occupys his dad's friday nights. Your BF may inadvertently be doing more harm than good, especially if you've already been dating a year. Personally, I would almost be insulted. If this man is someone you're serious about and someone you would consider marrying, a year is plenty long enough to take the next step with his family - especially at your ages and with your life experience. It almost sounds to me like he's making an excuse not to move the relationship along and using this mysterious "commitment" to his son as a cover up. Also - he needs to think about what it is that he's teaching his son about relationships. His son will grow up and treat women in the same way he sees his dad treating them. He will also view relationships with women in much the same way that his father does. If his son is learning not to trust women and to be wary of having them around family members, the kid could grow up with some serious trust issues himself. Lots to think about for you here - it would raise lots of red flags for me.

Like Martin, I regard this forum as an informal book club to which I belong. I also belong to one based in my home town. This is a very education-oriented area. Our public library is the most active for its size in all of California. My own book club has no male members, and I don't think men would enjoy it. We discuss our books, often with surprising rigor, then spend some time laughing, drinking wine, and discussing what is going on in our lives. BTW, we read some nonfiction as well as fiction, though there is a bias in the fiction direction. We also travel together. Once a year we travel to meet an author and discuss his or her book, then spend several days exploring that author's home city. I don't always go, but have a very good time when I do. I suspect there would be very natural grumblings from spouses if we had men in the group traveling with us. Having said that, my husband likes to read. Some of his friends do, others do not. He does discuss books now and then with reading friends. One person from his bicycle-riding groups once proposed that several of them read a certain book, then discuss it. They did, but there was no follow up. I think that book clubs could exist that men would enjoy, but they would be quite different in character from those most women like. Rosefolly

I always give directions using street names, and that's how I navigate as well. I hate it when someone gives me directions using landmarks, as those landmarks are rather meaningless to me, and I usually do not spot them. I've read that women tend to give directions using landmarks and that men give directions using street names and NSEW, which is what I do, but that is probably an over-generalization. I remember asking a woman whether a certain business was north or south of Saticoy Street in the Van Nuys (it was only a few blocks away), and she gave me the exact opposite direction of where it really was, but she admitted not knowing north from south. We were in the Valley, however, and so that explains a lot. In Costa Rica we had trouble finding our last B&B because it was outside of town, and there were no street signs in the town, and so I went to a bar to ask directions. No one knew of the place where I wanted to go, and so I called the hotel to have the owner talk to the bartender, thinking they could figure out how to get from the bar to the hotel, but as it turned out, the hotel owner was Swiss, and his Spanish was not that good, and so they did not communicate that well. I could communicate with the hotel owner in German and the bartender in Spanish, but I could not get any kind of directions coordinated between them. They kept saying things like, turn left or right at the drug store, but there were drug stores on every other corner in that part of town. We drove all over town before we ever found our way to that B&B. The car had GPS, but the hotel's address was off the GPS grid, and GPS sent us to the wrong address. My best friend in Mexico City would hire taxis to lead her to places that she could not find when she was driving. She would pay them to go where she wanted to go, and then she would drive behind them.

Personally, I think it is totally against their basic makeup to actually follow directions!

Wow! That is serious. I hope he has learned his lesson - but that too is against their basic nature!

I dunno about your DH but mine won't follow directions from a Doc because he always knows more than the doctor! (or he THINKS he does!)

Isn't that just frustrating as all heck?

Its not testosterone; Its isn't "not understanding" the instruction; If the instruction is too convoluted, they brush it off and don't believe it. The instruction has to "make sense to the man" else he won't believe it.

For example, if a robber cocks a gun and puts it to his head and states, "This thing has a hair trigger. Don't make me nervous. It makes a big hole." A man will understand this since it is direct and to the point and if the gun is big enough, but then, there are some who are obstinate and stubborn and might test the robber's statement.

And why won't men admit they are sick? My husband, who is perfect in every other way, will NOT admit that he has a cold/flu. He fights it, it wins, and I have a fit! Then I usually catch it. Thank heavens he is almost perfect . . . .
Hope your husband has a better time with his defibrillator now, and that you do, too!

Linda, hopefully this will teach him to LISTEN to the doctor and then MIND HIM/HER.

I know it's got to be difficult for you too, worrying about him.

My husband will not go to the doctor and he really needs to go. He has always been this way! I could say more but I won't. Hope your hubby gets along okay and listens to you and his doctor.

We have an old joke that we pass around every year at our Passover Seder table because we try and inject a little humor into everything ;o) Traditionally, the youngest child recites "The Four Questions"...somehow this joke has always seemed to find its way at the end of "The Four Questions", being dubbed as "The Fifth Question". We even say it in Yiddish. We still can't remember who started it LOL.

Question: Why did Moses travel in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights?

Answer: Because Moses was a man and you know men don't ask for directions.

marilyn_sue -- One of my best friends' DH had trouble eating for a YEAR before he finally went for medical help. He had Stage 3 Cancer of the Esophogus by then. Lots of pain, chemo, surgery, BILLS!

Make an appointment; put your DH in the car; drive him to the doctor. Tell him how happy you will be when it turns out to be 'nothing' so you can stop worrying. Wouldn't he like to help you stop worrying?

The older my hubby gets the worse he gets and, of cource, the dumber I get. I was surprised he told me when they went on an all man fishing trip they missed a turn. Usually he doesn't offer this type info.. I love the silly guy but sometimes I wonder why..
