Why oh why can't I make fudge?

My sweet niece was wanting some pumpkin fudge, so I thought to myself "no problem!" I found a great looking recipe from Libby's and went to work. Followed the directions exactly, using my candy thermometer to monitor the temp. It's bad....I mean crumbly and dry. The flavor is TO DIE FOR which makes me even more irritated that this didn't turn out. I took everything off the heat when it reached soft ball stage, added in the marshmallow fluff and white chips, then stirred it up and glopped it in the pan. I say glopped because it certainly wasn't pourable. When I first got it in the pan, it looked as if I had poured some melted butter on top. It soon dried up but how strange...Anyways, any thoughts/insights on how to achieve success with this?
