Any updates on DFN?

That family has been on my heart and in my prayers. I looked but don't see that there has been an update since last week. Her daughters were to have flown in last Friday.

Has anyone heard from dotmom?

Thanks for asking, Okwriter....She was sedated and ventilated (I;m not sure what that is called where a tube is put in to breath for a person) for over a week. She was also getting radiation, trying to shrink the mass that was obstructing her breathing and swallowing. After trying several times to wean her off of the sedatives and tubing, they were finally able to do that last Thursday. Her daughters flew in last Friday and she was able to see them and altho she can only talk in a whisper, they could converse some. She was moved from the hospital in Brainard, about 25 or so miles away to our local hospital yesterday, where she will stay untill things can be set up at their home for her, hospital bed, wheel chair and hospice care for when Dok & Willie have to work. After about a week, she will be brought to the Brainard Hosp. for five daily, out patient radiation treatments. I don't know what or if any treatments are planned after that. It is heartbreaking but unless we get a miracle (and I believe it CAN happen) we are going to lose her. I have to say, it makes this old mom & grandmom's heart swell with love and pride when I see Dok & her son Willie tending to her so thoughtfully and tenderly. Their love for her is so appearant. Seldom does the world see such a brave and selfless person. I'm honored to have met both Dottie and Harrietta. I really enjoyed those hours and I can imagine how family and close friends have cherished the time they had with her, albeit, way, way too short a time it was. Another example of the good dying way too young. Rest in peace my friend. You fought a brave battle and I hope the pain wasn't too severe. You showed that a down to earth person can have unequalled class. I tip my hat and raise my glass to you.

Any ideas to update frame and mat for a fresher look?

One idea is to lean into the darker colors so it doesn’t look so “sweet” . The darker purplish color or the dark green for the mat,perhaps . A frame without the gold trim and maybe flat, heftier but not too wide. For even vintage/ traditional pieces a simple black or white frame often works as looks classic. Although white be too stark for the cream colored fabric. I think wood tones can work, but something that doesn’t look too “ country”. So, a pale bleached wood with dark mat, or walnut with contrasting mat. Or, a painted frame. If you want more drama, you could also consider an oversized mat & frame. You could take it to a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and get framer staff to show you some different combinations to see what is still in the spirit of the textile, but fresher- looking.

Is this type of olive oil dispenser any good? (updated)

@porkchop_z5b_MI, that dispenser would be way too small to be useful for me. And the spout is rather large. Keep looking. I am Greek American, which in and of itself does not give me a superior knowledge of olive oil and its storage, but I am part of a culture that believes food exists to provide opportunities for getting olive oil into our bodies. We fry our eggs and ”butter” our toast in olive oil, our leafy greens are served in olive oil and lemon juice, and we go through gallons (well, liters) of the stuff. My cousins in Greece who have their own professions, still grow olives on family land, harvest them, bottle the fresh pressed oil, and send us a bottle every year just to keep us healthy and connected to our ancestral home. I’ve also seen how they use and store their oil. In case you find it interesting: 1. We never store olive oil in plastic because plastic can leach chemicals into the oil. It goes without saying that we do not buy olive oil in plastic bottles (which rules out Graza for me, as if I would buy Spanish olive oil anyway - my Greek DNA would revolt). 2. We usually buy olive oil in 3L cans and aliquot the oil into dispensers for daily use. 3. We use dark glass bottles or ceramic dispensers (reminiscent of the amphorae our ancestors used) with pour spouts that ”close” because we need the convenience. We wash those containers and allow them to dry completely before re-filling them, which brings me to… 4. We always have 2 dispensers going at a time. We try to use them serially, actually use them at the same time, but it means you always have oil in one of them while you are cleaning the other. I am pretty consistent in using the dark glass bottle option, just as you probably do. The one below holds enough oil to be useful, and is easy to clean. And the spout is not so narrow that it takes forever to pour a tablespoon, and not so huge that you basically have an open container. Is it pretty? Not really, but it is familiar. My eldest sister has two of these ceramic dispensers. I like them less because I can’t see how much oil is left in them, and somehow I’m always the one cleaning them. Once you get your dispenser, whatever you choose, fill it with Greek olive oil. If you use olive oil for the polyphenols and health benefits as much as for the flavor, keep in mind that Greek olive oil has the highest percentage of polyphenols of any (extra virgin, first cold pressing) olive oil on the planet. Thanks for the update dotmom. It brought tears. Poor DFN is fighting so hard. She's still in my prayers as you all are. I believe in miracles and it can happen.

Please add mine, too. Dotmom, I continue to be amazed at your attitude in the face of hardships you've been through in the last couple of years. You always take a positive note and are quick to add genuinely encouraging/congratulating thoughts to everyone else's posts, when you could justifiably be wallowing in sadness. Thank you for your thoughtfulness! Yes, there's always hope for a miracle, and that's what we'll all be praying and hoping for, as well as God's peace for dfn and her (your) family.
