Forest Pansy Red Bud in a Hot Spot
Comments (8)I think with 'Forest Pansy' it is the total environment. I had always thought of this cultivar as tender, sensitive to heat, sun, wind, etc. I don't know if you are familiar with the Italian food chain Carraba's, but they have roof gardens. At one near me they installed three Forest Pansy redbuds in a roof garden with an environment that is intense. Constant super high wind, full sun all day long, typically low humidity. BUT, they also installed an effective irrigation system, excellent soil mix, a well drained, well sloped planter and give the plantings annual slow release fertilization. The plants have adequately survived yet have not thrived, and after four years one has died (third year), but the other two are hanging on. Admittedly, they do not bloom well in spring. The point is, you can probably grow them anywhere if you are willing to accept less than ideal growth response and are willing to go the extra mile. After watching these tortured plants I have a different take on Forest Pansy. hortster...See MoreRed Savina aka Wnen you're hOt, you're HOT
Comments (12)John, You sent me these Red Savina seed 2 or 3 years ago. We had nearly perfect superhot growing weather this year with a long dry summer and then wet fall. The Red Savina's were so hot that I had to process them outdoors wearing a mask. My M-I-L tried to cut up a few to fill a quart jar with slices to make hot sauce. Her kitchen was uninhabitable for 2 hours. I have 3 quart jars of sliced peppers in vinegar. One half of one pepper is enough to make 2 gallons of chili almost unbearably hot. I cut the pods in half and nipped out the stem and seed. When finished, I had a small bowl full of seed that I let dry for about 10 days. Then I tried to shell the seed off of the placenta. Big mistake, I did it indoors. In less than 5 minutes, the air was so full of pepper oil that I was asked to leave the house. I finished separating the seed outdoors. I now have a package of about 2000 pure Red Savina seed from the large plant and have saved a few hundred seed from the smaller plant. My only dilemma now is whether or not to grow plants for next year. 3 quarts of super hot sauce is enough to last me several years. One note is that everyone who tried them agreed that the flavor was superb. We had carefully cut some peppers open and removed the seed and ribs to get rid of most of the heat. This was the only way we could eat them fresh. Fusion...See MoreItchy, Itchy, Itchy all over
Comments (19)I've had problems as well and made two visits to my dermatologist in November and December last year. I've stayed away from skin care products (face & body) containing fragrance for many years. My doctor told me to switch to fragrance free laundry detergent and dryer sheets----something I had not done before. She gave me a steroid shot, a perscription and samples of a new antihistamine called Xyzal. Also wrote a perscription for Zyrtec in case my insurance would not cover Xyzal (Zyrtec is now OTC). For daily skin care she recommended Cerave' cleansing and moisturizing lotions (also comes in a cream) AND I'm washing my colored hair in Head & Shoulders. I'm doing much better. I'll probably switch back to Claritin this June and see if that works OK. Mayo Clinic's info says that Xyzal, Zyrtec and Claritin (just in that order) are best for those of us with skin problems. NOTE: Cerave' does a great job cleansing my face---great job removing makeup. I get it at CVS and Rite Aid stores where I live. Check Cerave's web site for other retail stores....See MoreNatural remedies for hot spot
Comments (32)My golden retriever Camden had anal gland issues where I was taking her to get them purged at the vet every 3 weeks…. Before learning to do it myself. Ewww. Ha! I started her on “Perfect Form” by honest kitchen - it’s a supplement powder you mix into her food. No more issues with her butt ever since! Highly recommend. She is 9 now and we’ve been using this powder since she was around 2. She has “loose” glands so the perfect form made her have to work just a little harder and squeeze her stool out which lets her purge her glands naturally and on her own now! Praise be! My other golden retriever Cara is 12 and has been battling some type of undiagnosed skin dermatitis/autoimmune disorder of some kind. Her belly area gets scaly and turns into open lesions. Started as dry skin about three years ago and then she lost her belly hair. We finally saw a dermatologist and her first thought was food allergies. We’ve switched her food a few times, tried elimination diets, and now have her on a hydrolyzed protein diet by Royal Canin. No real improvement yet so hopefully we can see what the dermatologist says at the follow up. It still may be environmental allergies however it seems unlikely since we have never moved. It’s been almost 8 weeks on the HP food. 8 is the minimum amount of time to see results with food/diet Changes from what we have been told. We shall see! We’ve been spot washing her a few times a week with Maleseb (leaving on 5-10 min) and putting neo predef powder on the wounds when her skin flares up (when we forget to treat her for too long). Doing this clears up the issues in about a week or less….but only temporary…. When we stop then the scales come back and area gets inflamed and oozy and scabby again. Looking forward to trying the COAT DEFENSE canine powder listed above. Just ordered it so please send prayers please! Hope this helps some other pet owners out there!...See Morelynne_melb
