Can anyone tell what these shrubs are?

These are in DD's garden and we aren't sure what they are. One looks like a lilac but the leaves are different. Another is thought to be a sand cherry, but I don't know. The 3rd is pretty but again, I don't know. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the middle one definitely looks like a purple sand cherry. The others? I am not sure. The bottom one MIGHT be a wegelia or a dogwood maybe?

Personally, I think the bottom one is an Abelia.

second link no good ... and the first is tiny ... for what it is worth.. looks like common winter damage up here in MI ... reminds me of a rhodie.. but i dont know all your sub tropical potential in TN ... [gardenia???] ken lead me to your leader?? lead pencil i dont get the title???

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I spoke with a master gardener at the Ventura County Extension Office and it is Xylosma Congestum. As Joe said, I did not mean to imply it was native, my apologies. One of the major nurseries here in Austin is starting to push it as an alternative to Waxleaf Ligustrum and Red Tip Photinia. Both of which have been grossly over planted all over Texas. I thought I recognized it from the picture but wanted to be sure. I am thinking about trying it and wanted to research it more once I confirmed that it is xylosma. Mike - Thanks for the compliment of my daughter. Unfortunately it was a whirlwind tour and I really don't remember a lot of the landscaping except for the picture above and the roses. Although, everywhere I went in Los Angeles and San Diego the roses were phenomenal! Thanks again for everyones' responses, Jeremy

It looks like viburnum suspensum. While trimming it, mine gave off an odor similar to that which is added in gas utility lines to warn of a leak. - June

Middle one looks like Lorepetulum (sp) to me.

It's hard to tell without a closeup of the flowers but, I think #3 might be a cotoneaster.

The second one does look like a sand cherry. And the third one resembles my deciduous holly - and they have those little flowers on them right now too. I think it's winterberry holly.

The second one does look like a sand cherry, I have several of those because they can take a beating by our summer winds. The last one looks like several bushes. I thought of holly except I thought holly leaves were somewhat semetrical on each side and the one in the picture isn't. Jasime bush came to mind or a yellow dogwood. I really can't tell.

The first bush, I know I've seen but the name is out of my head.

Okay, the general consensus is that the middle shrub is indeed a sand cherry. Good to know.

I've googled all your suggestions, and Moni, the abelia has larger flowers. McMann, I'm pretty sure it's not a winterberry holly. Ronf, you're very close, I think. Not a regular cotoneaster, but perhaps a hedge cotoneaster, as it is round and is growing up, rather than out like the other ones.

So that just leaves the top one. The flowers look like lilac but the leaves are quite different. They are not smoothe, but veiny and are not heart-shaped like lilacs. So what do you think?

Could the first be a buddleia? Looks like the flower...just not too convinced of the leaves?????

The top one - the leaves look like a hydrangea. Maybe a lacecap version? Here is a link to a haydrangea Nursery.

i have seen the top one up north as a weed, can't remember the name for sure, maybe eupatorium?? i'll look around. it's definitely not a lilac, buddlei or hydrangea.

i thought the 2nd was loropetalum at first too but looking at the undersides of the uppermost leaves makes me think it's some sort of sand cherry. i'm not that familiar w/ them, they don't grow here in orlando and i did not have them in chicago.

the 3rd maybe some kind of viburnum. ~ liz
