Leaving tomorrow bright and early

I'm going to Hawaii. I have to get up about 3:30. My flight leaves Lexington at almost 7 am. I'm already tired just thinking about it and all those hours in the airport and flying. I bought a couple books to take with me, "The Mysterious Benedict Society" (a kid's book) and "Meg, Hell's Aquarium".

The second is part of the MEG(ladon) series. I've only read the first book and thought it was pretty good. I realized what a stupid choice this was after I bought it as I am deathly afraid of deep, dark water and sharks...so not so good reading about that as I'm flying over the ocean. LOL! Hate flying too, especially over the ocean, actually any water.

But, am looking forward to seeing Hawaii and my friend. See you all in a couple weeks!

It will be a long day, but when you get off the plane and feel that balmy air, it will be worth it. You are smart to take reading. Why don't you leave the second book at home and pick up something else in the airport or Hawaii?

OK. I am finding this too weird. I thought I was catlover. For some egocentric reason I was sitting here wondering how many posts I had made and another catlover showed up. Scary thing is that I have something to say. My son -- now 25 -- left college -- Amherst College -- unexpectantly in late October of 2001. We live half way across the country but had been there to see him that weekend in an athletic event. He was -- and is (he is my son) handsome, smart, and athletic. The Monday we left he dropped a note in the mail telling us he had to leave. He said he was fine. He would be home for Christmas, but we would otherwise not hear from him. I freaked out, emailing the world. He picked that up and called. He came home. He was sad. He, who was in his 2nd year, saw his education as a waste of our money. He felt he could educate himself. He worried that he was doing what society expected him to do. He was home for a bit. He worked with Americorp for a while. He sold pizzas far away and lived with a bunch of guys. He returned to college the next fall. I begged him to do so. I told him he to be anything he wanted -- a vagabond, etc., but please finish college. No expectations would be attached to finshing. He did -- he wandered through a a bit of an english major, a philosophy major, a math major, and he finally settled on geology (he loves the outdoors). He is very introspective. He fell in love. He says the best thing he got out of college is his "now wife." He finished college and taught young children for a year. He is now in an Ivy league law school hoping to work on human rights and consitutional issues as an attorney. Money is not his issue. Hang in there. I truely believe what makes my son a caring, passionate person is what made him leave school. Isn't retrospect a wonderful thing? Adele a/k/a catlover

Suggestions for trees with leaves that will change color in early fall

The American smoke tree pictured above is 8 ft tall, and as well as I can remember it's probably about 10/12 years old. Edit: Since dear sweet hubby Bob was going that way I asked him to guestimate the height of tree between the side fence and the swing. After a while he came back in and proudly announced "Seven ft, eleven and a fourth inch." I thought "Hmmm, I would have guestimated it was much taller than that", but figured that he had gotten the tape measure to be sure. Well, I just went out there and see that he measured the Satsuma which is indeed right behind the swing and about 8 ft tall. Since the American smoke tree is taller than the garage I'd guess it's about 14 ft. I'm not going to tell him ... LOL

I broke mine over so that the trifoliate leaves provided food for the roots and the small grafting. I broke off any budding on the trifoliata as soon as I saw bud expantion.Morning of. I removed the trifoliate trunk as seen below. Evening after clippingTime to clip the trifoliate trunk off about a half inch from the union. Be very careful to not dislodge the graft. The physical connection is still very frail. This also means keep it out of winds and indoors. You will need to acclimate it to sun light slowly. If the tree loses its leave to sun scalding it will not have the reserves to send out new leaves.. It will die. 6b Steve

have a great trip. And here's a tip. If you take the tour up to the volcano in the evening, buy your own flashlight to take with you, and wear good sturdy shoes. DSIL & DBIL went last year. They could have bought their own flash lights for what it cost them to rent them, and maybe had change left over!

Oh, and don't worry about the sharks. They wouldn't dare chance the rath of the KT!

Hi Kath - have a glorious time in Hawaii!!

En route to Korea, to marry me, my ex's passenger liner spent a day in Hawaii ... and that's where Sue said that she wanted to retire!

On our return on furlough, we spent, for her, a second day in Hawaii, with our son, just shy of two years of age.

When there was talk of closing the hosp. where she'd been head of food service for 20 years or so, or another nearby ...

... she took early retirement.

Stayed in the home that she'd had for years ... but had a ball for ten years or so.

I don't think that she ever visited Hawaii again - but it sure made an impression on her, first time around!

I hope that you enjoy a bang-up holiday!

Have a wonderful time Kath. Enjoy your adventure. The weather has been beautiful. DD and her DH are flying back tonight. Actually they should be in the air already since ther flight lands in SFO a little after nine.
