I have this posted in the computer forum but I though I'd post it here also to see if anyone can help me. I'm really having a dilemma here. My antivirus is ready to expire. Our internet provider has a free Norton download which I'm trying to download. I keep getting an error saying it cannot be downloaded and it kicks me out of internet explorer. I uninstalled Norton and still cannot download anything. I called Comcast and they couldn't remote into the computer. he said i won't be able to download anything because something is wrong with explorer. how do i bring the computer back to the factory mode. we also tried in safe mode and that didn't work either. thank you all bunches and bunches for any help you can give me.

Sometimes AV programs don't uninstall completely using Windows uninstall. Is that what you used? Is there a Norton Uninstall option on your menu tree that you can try running?

If that isn't the problem, or even if it is, try using a different browser, like Firefox.

Have you tried using Google Chrome for a browser? I rarely if ever use Internet Explorer any more. Chrome works really well.

well those toolbars come with many many programs if you do not read carefully when doing installs or updates including java, flash, and IE, many of them, in fact there is a hall of shame at COU forum listing all of the programs that now include pre selected toolbars in their install, it has nothing to do with the browser you use to do the download or install it has to do with watching what is pre checked when doing your updates or program installs and un checking any for things like toolbars. I have had to clean tons of toolbars off of peoples computers too who had never heard of firefox, only had IE. I tell people to add a second browser because it is a very good idea to always have at least 2 on the pc because as we all know IE can and does fail then leaving them no way to access the internet. Whether they select firefox, chrome or opera, it does not matter but firefox is the best known so when asking for help they will find more people that are familiar with it. All browsers have their pluses and minuses none are perfect and I have never seen anyone here say any one browser is perfect. the point to make to people who have loaded up their pc with toolbars, why this is happening to them, is to watch what they are doing! Pay attention to every single line when doing any type of install. And do not let it add unwanted items, if they are not told how it happened it will happen again. No that article did not apply. Mine shows "Mod Name urlmon.dll". Zep, can I safely remove IE8 and the update via Control Panel? If so, will it automatically roll back to IE7, or how do I go back?

I sometimes get that message when I have a loose connection, either with my cable modem or the Linksys router. It will clear after checking the connections and/or pushing the reset button. Just my 2 c's. Bejay

Without stepping on anyone's toes, could I join the needing help with this issue? If this should be a separate thread, please tell me... Approx 2 months, same problem with IE9. I know there had been an update a few days before I noticed the problem but thought I'd used the browser for same tasks for a few days after that. For the last few (8 or more) weeks, I have to type my username into Ebay sign in when I didn't before, and I can't leave or view feedback there with IE9 any longer. Shop, buy, pay - all fine. My bank, all else has been OK except GW....I can't log into GW either and Tamara hasn't been able to assist. I'm having to change browsers and use Firefox for the forums, and to leave feedback on Ebay...just those two places. Workable but annoying. Windows 7. I didn't intentionally change any settings or do anything where I could have unintentionally changed them that I'm aware of, and I do use CCleaner regularly, no big cookie stashes. I've moved Ebay cookies and GW cookies to the delete side of the CCleaner options, moved them back to the 'saves'...no difference.

Try running this free program app remover, be sure to download the free version, run it and see if it finds more Norton files that need to be removed.
Be sure to disable the Norton so it can remove files, if they are in use its difficult to remove them.

The problem is I can't download anything. The person I spoke to said to try bringing by computer back to the factory start. Everything I try to download gives me an error. it don't know how to fix it.

Try restoring.

You can pick a restore date. I'd do that before restoring back to factory starting point.

Yes try system restore to a date prior to the problems. You didn't tell what version of Windows you are using. Directions vary depending on the version.
You can try downloading a program to another computer and put it on a USB flash drive then install it on the problem pc from the flash drive.

When I restore, I pick a restore point days before the problem started.

Works for me.

...and then NEVER use Internet Explorer again. Use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc....

update and a big thank you for all the help and suggestions.
I did a restore and still couldn't download the free antivirus. so I thought, ok,let me try to download google chrome. Well, that worked and now I have download the free antivirus from Comcast.net. The only question I have about google chrome is how do I get back to the home page after going into other sites?

There should be a "house" to the left of the URL bar, top left of the screen.

If you can download now I would get the appremover to make sure all the bits and pieces of the old Norton have been removed so you don't have conflicts with the new Antivirus, even if the new one is also Norton. They will have different version numbers. Usually the ones offered free by an ISP are special editions.

You can Google for information on how to use Chrome which will help you get around it quickly.

When installing Norton as a Comcast customer, the download is from Norton. I was a Norton Customer before becoming a Comcast customer and other than a bit of brand signage, the Norton Suite doesn't appear to have different versions.

There's no need for any third party uninstaller program - if you look on your program menu under Norton Security Suite, one of the choices is Norton Uninstall.

I can tell you from my own experience that that utility works very comprehensively. I once had a corrupted file that required an uninstall - reinstall that wasn't working for me, and Norton Tech Support used that tool on a remote connection.
