The New Yorker is profiling Nora Roberts in the current issue. I don't see the article online (it's called "Real Romance") but perhaps they'll upload it when the issue is no longer current.

They describe NR as a "tough broad," and state that her friends call her N.F.R. (I'll let you figure out what the F stands for.) It doesn't sound as though she's very affectionate or sympathetic. The article refers to her "dirty mouth" and "smoker's voice."

Here are some rather staggering stats:

She grosses $60 million a year.

In 2008, her publisher shipped more than 8 million Nora Roberts books. Plus 4.5 million JD Robb books.

Twenty-seven Nora Roberts books are sold every minute.

There are enough Nora Roberts books in print to fill the Giants Stadium 4,000 times.

Only one JD Robb novel features a dedication: to a friend whose brother (a priest) promised that if she mentioned his sister's name he would grant Roberts perpetual absolution.

It's an interesting article.

I think I'd rather read NR than Danielle Steel, her writing is a little more sophisticated and researched, but that's just my opinion, I read anything and everything!

I like NR. I was a huge fan of Danielle Steel but her books began to seem to be all the same to me. Like Bigack I read everything. The ladies in the library laugh when I come in with my big book bag. I go to one shelf and take out 10 that I have not read before and off I go. Weird, but it keeps me busy!

fly, I won't be able to see it in person til Saturday AM. After requesting the additional pics, and doing research online and talking to my sister about the quality, I felt I should commit to buy. I can tell from the emails from the seller that she won't 'force' me to buy it should I see something I don't like about it. I can't imagine NOT buying it from what I have seen and learned. I sew a lot, and I'm so impressed with the plaids matching EVERYWHERE that it's something I'd be proud to have in my home. The fabric looks neutral enough to fit just about anywhere here, and I agree about the grosgrain look!

'Restaurant Impossible' with Robert Irvine

I really like Restaurant: Impossible, had never seen it before recently. I like the energy Irvine brings to the show, that's a critical missing attribute in these failing restaurants, no energy, tired, etc. The Floodtide episode was my favorite to date, the kitchen was filthy, and why were they not utilizing the wood-oven? Hard to believe they can really do all that in two days on $10,000, but maybe they really do? Hmm. Big question is this: how well do these restaurants continue in the "new routine", or do they fall back into bad old ways before long? Irvine's bio at the FC website is impressive, say what you want, he's got the right stuff to turn a place around, IF they will listen. I look f/w to future episodes, go ROBERT!

Patriciae, I can speak only for myself, but to me there's a big difference between her early books and the later ones. This is evident just from reading synopses. I enjoy the later ones--say, 2010 and beyond, although there may be some written a little earlier that I'd like. The later ones are longer and more complex than the earlier ones. (I'm talking about her romantic suspense novels, not the "In Death" series--I love all of those.) I've been impressed with her research. The Search is a good example. It has a lot of information about Canine Search & Rescue. She clearly loves dogs, and I can relate. Her trilogies are popular, but they'r not my thing. I read one and it was pleasant, but I can take just so much "magick." :-)

Trish, I've gotten to the point that everytime I go to the library and pull out a book, I've already read it! I go thru 4 a week, and there's not as many available in large print, but I still find good ones.

When Lifetime tv website ran the free NR movies there was a clip interviewing her...She is old and hard looking...Not at all like her pictures on her books.....LOL...I had to wonder how she knew about all those "hot" scenes she writes about.

I also like NR, but I do wonder how she manages to "write" so many books a year with all of them having decent plots. I agree with Trish, I used to read all of DS books till they all seemed the same. NR reminds me of James Patterson. I think he has a new one about every month. I know he has co-writers, I wonder if NR does too?
