Sam having a retriever training session

Since Sam is the red-headed step-child, and tells me he has nev-er had a post of his very own without having to share with Harry (the most perfect and beautifulest dog in the whole wide world) I thought I'd share a couple pics of Sam.

Here he is doing a session of retriever training. He has to jump up on the short table and "Hold" the duck dummy until Wes tells him "drop." He holds it for a couple minutes. Sometimes a little more; sometimes a little less.

I don't know why it works, but it does. Harry (the most perfect and beautifulest dog in the whole wide world) did the same training when he was a pup.

Sam is so happy since I told him he got his very own posting, with photos, and without Harry (the most perfect and beautifulest dog in the whole wide world)

Poor little guy will always live in the shadow.... Only the shadow knows.

But, Caroline, I see he had to share this thread too! You didn't even get the first sentence out without mentioning "Harry (the most perfect and beautifulest dog in the whole wide world)" BTW, doesn't look too red to me! :)

I think you're gonna give that poor boy a complex! Give him a biscuit for me and scratch his ears. All for Sam!

BTW what happened to Sam's brother? I still think you should have taken both of them! :) I imagine he got a good home.

Love all the stories. I garden with a German Shepherd and a Golden Retriever that love to pick veggies. In the early gardening season, one or two "no" reminders will keep them out. They'll sit and wait near the row of snow pea pods for me to throw them the over sized pods. (Every few years the neighbors have peas in the field near my garden, then the dogs will find a spot and sit and pick their own.)b By the time the cucumbers are producing, all bets are off when it comes to staying out of the garden. Then, if I'm not quick enough to pick and toss some large cukes their way, they'll pick their own. They take them off to a shady spot to munch while I continue slaving in the sun. Zucchini is another favorite along with butternut squash, though they prefer the butternut cooked. They've also come to enjoy tomatoes, though have yet to pick their own maters. They also like apples and will occasionally pick them off the trees, gooseberries, plums, & apricots are also on the menu.About the only things they won't eat are green beans, onions, and garlic. One thing is certain, things are never dull when they're helping me.

I'm Irish and Native American; hubby is genetically Scottish raised by German/Irish adoptive parents. We're a mess! LOL The dogs' breed, Deutsh Drahthaar, is a German registered vesatile hunting mix from the late 1800s. Some of the ancestors included wirehairs, pointers, Poodle Pointers, and other birdy type dogs no longer available. My half of the dogs are Celtic! LOL (and both halves are mine!) Patti - They were out about three hours that day and Sam ran like that the entire time. You can see tree lines off in the distance; they are near the farm access roads, which are each one mile apart. That gives a little scope of the vastness. Sam will run until he's completely out of sight and, eventually, come zooming back by. He's a nut. Harry stays "close," he ventures out about 1/2 mile and keeps circling back in.

I always get one big enough to put the dog in when he is full grown. Usually the box will tell you what size of dog it will accomodate. When they are still small puppies, I would put a box in the back of the crate to take up some of the space. This is useful when trying the house train them because they do not want to soil the area in which they have to sleep so you don't want them to have too much space where they can sleep in one area and potty in the other area. Samoyeds are so cute! Lucky you for getting one. I would love to see a picture of your new baby!

Glenda...The debates about his "manhood" is hot and heavy in this house. You can see his two main problems in the second photo.

He will be neutered. I know it. Sam knows it. Harry (the smartest, most perfect, and beautifulest neutered dog in the whole wide world) knows it.

dH just has to learn it. Yes, for this topic; that's a lower case "d". LOL

Cynic...He does get attention, and belly rubs, and back scratches. I'm sometimes late feeding him, though. If I'm five minutes late with Harry's food (he eats first) he starts howling and climbing the walls and jumping on the counter.

Poor little Sam doesn't ever "ask" to be fed. After Harry eats, I let him outside and usually get busy doing something. Then, maybe 20 minutes later, when Harry comes back in, I'll notice Sam, laying by the bowl. Waiting. That makes me feel bad.

Seriously, he's all about me, and follows me around, and adores me...and I call him the red-headed step-child.

I'll have to try to get better photos. It's really hard to photograph a black, shiney dog. His beard has red highlights; even more so in the sunshine.

I have only one issue with Sam. He bullies Harry.

He terrifies Harry. He knocks him around, steals his toys, (but not his food) rams him into the fence or walls...and Harry allows it. I can't ever let them both outside at the same time. I'm hoping he calms down as time goes by.

He's such a handsome dog. Methinks you protest too much. ;-) It is so obvious to all that you love him. Harry is and will always be special to you but Sam has already worked his way into your heart. We humans are just the last to know it.

Poor Harry. Being bullied by this young upstart. He probably isn't half as bothered by it as you are.

How old is Sam now? I never neuter my males until they are at least 18 months old so their bone development is finished and the growth plates are closed.

Caroline, your posts are hilarious. I had to laugh when I read your not-so-restrained feelings about Harry! Way too funny.

I'm sure Sam doesn't know he's "second-best". He gets lots of affection on his own.
