I have one that does it all, including convection etc, I have it taking up valuable counter space and I honestly don't remember the last time I used it. It is a toastmaster convection oven broiler it is an excellent product. It is big as big a microwave. If you do want one that is a good brand.

I use mine every day.....I make toast, I bake, I do casseroles, and everything the big oven can do. Right now, I have clam stuffed mushrooms heating in it.....better than the microwave as it browns them as it heats. Yesterday I made the impossible coconut pie, the day before scalloped potatoes, etc. etc. I wanted one that would shut off by itself (I am an incurable burner-of-food). I had a GE that I liked, but it died after only a year or so; I looked for one and found the Oster that I have now, for half price. I do love it, and I think I use it every day. Oh,yes, my toaster died, so I think I'll just use my toaster oven....why not? It is a work-a-holic!

If that model is discontinued, look at what current offerings there are from the same company. We have the Cuisinart, and I'd buy another (even different model) in a second.

Phyllis... Oster was one that had good ratings on Amazon. I will go back and read the reviews and specs.
And Sushipup, the Cuisinart website didn't say what replaced it (the model 175bc) but there is a model 195 out. So i guess it was that one. Cuisinart is a little higher in price, that is why I was wondering if the convection feature is worth it.

Sorry, but we haven't used the convection feature at all. Rarely use it in the big oven either.

We have a Cuisinart that boils, toasts, and has a convection oven. We use it constantly - usually more than once a day.

Lazypup, that is what I am worried about! that it will just be a novelty.

Joanne....so you like the Cuisinart? I hate to heat up the kitchen with the oven in the summer,that is why I am thinking of the toaster oven. And too, I thought it might do a better job on things like baking sweet potatoes than the microwave does. I think I am going out tomorrow to look at the Cuisinarts and the Osters.

I use mine far more than I use my microwave...especially for leftovers. Don't like the taste of nuked foods. I have a Cuisinart, but got it at Costco. (This is the only Cusinart appliance I have ever liked...and I tried many after liking this toaster oven, but didn't like any others.) I would NOT buy a really small one or it won't be as versatile. I never, ever use my oven in the summer. I can use anything just short of a 9 x 13 baking pan. Many casseroles fit well.

I have a GE that I bought at Wal-Mart for around $50 and I love it. I use it every day...I honestly even bake bread in mine. It is not the smallest you can get but not the biggest either. I chose this model because it has a rotisserie ..and it is convection too. You won't be sorry you bought it if you use your oven a lot......

I also use mine more than I use my microwave and I don't own a toaster. It does take up a large amount of counter space, but I have a small counter to the left of my cooktop where it fits perfectly. I wouldn't be using that counter for anything else anyway because of its size.

One mistake I made when I bought mine was not checking the sound of the beep. Mine is wake-the-neighbors loud which is annoying and means that I have to be cautious about using it when anyone is sleeping.

I have a Munsey. It toasts, bakes and broils. It does not take up much space. It does not convect. Neither does my other oven. It does not have a digital display and it is not multiple-lingual. I use it almost daily, and I love it! This little machine is probably 12-to-14 years old. I will be sad when it toasts it's final toast.

My husband & I have been using a toaster oven since I bought our too-small toaster oven over 30 years ago. Loved it except for the size, so several years later bought a larger DeLonghi TO, which lasted about 15 years, & are currently on a Braun. I can't remember the last time we fired up our stove oven---several years ago I think. About my favorite kitchen appliance. We use it to toast, to broil & to bake.

BTW, Consumers Report just recently reviewed Toaster Ovens, & the two "Breville" models came out on top, though they are the most expensive at $250 & $180, followed by Hamilton Beech at $100. I'd heard good things about the Breville TO brand from other sources previous to the CR article.

I bought a Hamilton Beach because that's all they had at the time, and I didn't want to wait..I should have waited. :) It seems to be cooking okay but the timer and on off switch is kind of strange. When you first turn it on it sets for 20 minutes automatically. You have to turn dial to the left to set for more time. I was baking beans and didn't realize the oven had shut off..needless to say the beans were not done in time for dinner. Wish I had shopped around more.

Never had one, I figure it's just something else to clean. My counter tops have nothing useful on they except a paper towel holder, a fruit bowl and a pretty cookie jar.

I have a Breville Smart Oven and love it. It only has one rack- but is ajustable to 3 heights.I never needed to use the second reck in my other Tos. I have had two other TOs (over 50 yrs.- DiLonghi and Krups)
The Breville exterior is slightly smaller than the others I have had, but the interior is the same. I know the Breville is expensive, compared to other brands, but it does go on sale occasionallly. I rarely use my big oven now with just the 2 or us. If I was starting out buying my first TO oven I would save up and buy a Breville.

I also have the Breville and bought the larger size (using a BBB 20% off coupon!). Glad I did! I use the TO more than I use the regular oven. It heats up quicker and does an excellent job at maintaining temperature. Yeah, it's big but as long as you plan for it, you'll be fine.

It toasts well, allowing for four slices with ample room. You can adjust the darkness and number of slices to get the exact level of browning you want.

My only complaint is that the rack doesn't have a back lip so it's easy to dump toast off the rack. I've done it several times!

Before the Breville, I had two Black and Decker TOs which lasted 20+ years each. One of them is still going (30 years). The other one had a thermostat go out so I splurged and bought the Breville.

I going to do some research, go to the library and see if i can find back issues of Consumer Reports. maybe I will save up for it. Either that one or the Cuisinart.

What do you want it to do? I've never broiled in one; are some self-cleaning now? My built-in oven has a 'mini-broil' option that's fine for anything small. (Only the center of the broiler heats up.)

My Krups is at least 15 years old. I only use it to toast and warm rolls; very occasionally bake something it it --or in *anything*, lazy cook that I am.

Last year I bought a tiny TO at the K-Mart on Maui just to toast and warm rolls. It was $15!

I use my Oster at least 3 or 4 times a week. It fits most anything I want for 2 people. I can make pies and brownies, pizza, potatoes, chicken strips, small casseroles....anything I would normally do on the oven. It heats up and cooks slightly faster than my oven.
I store it in my pantry and put on the counter only when I am using.

Chisue.... I 'think' I want to use it for baking, so as not to heat up the kitchen with the big oven, that sort of thing. that is why I was asking.... if people really use it that much. Maybe pizza, or baked potatoes, breads etc. I doubt that i would broil in it, because I am lazy and don't want to clean up the mess.

salgal.... I don't have a nice pantry, not a walk in anyway, so this would have to take up valuable counter space. I am trying to convince DH to replace the microwave with the TO. I have read that microwaved food is not good for you.

IIRC, my Cuisinart cost about $140 three years ago.

Jenna - I dont think I could give up my micro...My SO cannot (read: will not) cook to save his own life. Okay...so I think he could probably figure out how to heat a bowl of soup on the stove. BUT I guarantee he would:
- leave on high
- walk out to the garage
- never stir
- burn the bottom
- eat only down to the burnt stuff
- put in the sink and leave for ME to clean.
- make peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
I am not kidding.
The microwave he can use....even if he does reheat a piece of pizza for 5 minutes and turns into leather!
He doesn't use the TO either. The one time he tried he made chicken nuggets and tried to take the tray out without an oven mitt or even a rag! Upon getting a full grip - the pan and nuggets went flying. He picked them up started rinsing them off (Breaded nuggets!) No, no, no...beside the fact they are breaded...we have 3 cats. And I am not that good of a housekkeeper! (I made more)

Pamies and dees1 - how long does your Breville take to make toast? Most toaster ovens take forever, in my experience. I was at Bed Bath today, and the Brevilles looked very nice. - plus, I have a 20% off coupon. The smaller model really caught my eye.

I'm wondering who/what said microwaved food isn't good for you. Why not?

My oven doesn't heaat up the kitchen. It's probably better insulated than a toaster oven. I do prefer to use the T-O for just two rolls, and I wouldn't heat the broiler for just a piece of toast.

SalGal -- I'm guessing that your DH went from Mom to You; same here, but mine can use the M/W for soup. ("Married for better or for worse, but not for lunch."

sarah, the amount of time depends on the number of slices and how dark you want them. I have a toasted english muffin for breakfast most days and use the "toast" function (not "bagel"). I set it to 6 on the darkness setting and 3 slices, since I like it a little more toasted. Takes about 5 minutes. Generally, that's all the time needed to make the english muffin the way I like it. It took a bit of experimenting to come up with that setting.

When making toast from bread slices, I find the browning to be consistent on both top and bottom, as well as front to back.
