Peacock in driveway!

First he was on the back porch, now he is under the carport next to the truck. He's in too much shade to take a picture. We are completely fenced and have a gate, have no idea where he came from. I'm afraid to let the dogs out, I don't want them to hurt him. He is so beautiful.

Well they can fly short distances or up into trees to roost at night. So get your camera ready in case he comes back out into the light. Maybe it's a good luck sign!

My cousin had a farm and had a couple of peacocks. All I remember is they make an ungodly screaming sound. My Mom kept a few peacock plumes and hung them on the wall as a decoration. I don't know if she even still has them.

When I used to stay over at my daughter's farm, I loved to get up very early in the morning, cuppa in hand, and sit on her back porch steps and watch the mist rise as the sun warmed the valley up. You could hear the pea fowl from the dairy farm adjoining. He had a whole flock of them and they set up quite a racket. I asked the dh if I could get a couple, and he said no. Just like he said no to a sow, and no to the dairy goats. No to another horse and nixed the geese I raised, and found them new homes. He also said no to the chickens, but they happened anyway. LOL.

I wondeerded if you knew him gb... I mentioned that we had a friend in the area but didn't give you name. We didn't see the thyme path or the horses (no peacocks or roosters either :-) but we did meet Sasha (a rescued Golden Retriever). I would have liked to have met the horses but I didn't want to ask; since he was kind enough to take the time to welcome unexpected visitors, I didn't want to interrupt his day too much! We spent some time discussing Christmas ornaments with him - some of his antique ornaments were similar to what my grandparents had on their Christmas trees. I would have loved to see more of the property - definitely a place to take Idyll visitors! We will include Mapleton Organics in a future visit! Now that we have the address from the link you provided, we can program it into the GPS thingy... The GPS was a handy 'toy' to have. It did lead us astray a couple of times - but only because we had input the wrong town in the address (e.g. when we were trying to find that house, we thought it was in Fergus so the GPS kept trying to send us south instead of north! Once we changed the town to Center Wellington, it took us to the right place. It was a fun trip!

thanks for the feedback. funkycamper, thanks, very helpful to have the clearance info. We need to select our dining table and chairs to figure out how much space we'll have between. I think the sink will be around 32-35 inches -- still not sure as we're investigating having an integrated sink. We're re-purposing the original birch cabinets in a friend's home, so they will get new life after being refinished. We're re-purposing everything we can in this home -- as much as we have a love/hate relationship with The Cabinets That Will Not Open, we would not allow them to see the inside of a dumpster. oldbat2be, camelot years, love it! Thanks for your suggestions. We're excited to make this space more functional for our family. I like your idea for eliminating the low wall for plumbing -- I need to talk to our architect about what the plumbing requirements are and whether we can do that. It would be great to gain more storage. Along those lines, I drew up a very rough cabinet design. The current layout would have no upper cabinets on the wall with the range/hood -- just open shelving, which would be high and likely only for decorative items: Side view Obviously with this design we are sacrificing storage in order to achieve a minimalist look. But we'll have plenty of food storage with the 48 in pantry and a larger fridge, which is the main issue we have now. We would have to be very economical with what we have in our kitchen, which is fine because we don't have a lot of stuff. Our dishware would be in a lower drawer, next to the fridge. Glassware would be on the open shelf near the fridge. Cookware can go in the drawers under the cook top. I think we'd be ok with storage, but would welcome input from others to hear if we're too light on storage.

Rebecca, Lettuce transplants very easily. To ensure I have no problems, I always start the seedlings in paper cups I can plant (I use the tiny Dixie cups sold to go in bathroom cup dispensers) or in peat pellets. That way, no matter the age of the plants, I can transplant them with no real root disturbance. Lettuce seedlings generally need more light that the light shelf can get them and will get leggy fast, so as soon as the first tiny sprouts appear, I move them outdoors. I can carry then indoors, if needed, but since they're pretty cold-tolerant, I really don't need to carry them in very much if at all. Mary, Sow the seed slightly later than OSU recommends and you'll be fine. Carrot seed is slow to germinate in cold soils, but much quicker in warmer soils so the trade-off when planting later is minimal. It can take carrot seeds up to 30 days to germinate in cool soils but significantly less in warm soils, so you can get seedlings up before the end of March from a mid-March sowing or you can get seedlings up before the end of March from an early-March sowing. The difference is that the extended amount of time the seeds spend in cool soil between early and late March increases the chance something will happen to the seeds. Honestly, carrots are fairly easy if you sow them when the soil is a bit warmer. Look at how easily the closely related Queen Ann's Lace self-sows itself around by the hundreds and thousands of plants everywhere every year. Kim, I occasionally have harvested carrots even later than that---well into July in one year without an appreciable loss in quality, but it must have been a fairly wet, cool summer. Dawn

I bid (and lost...well gave up) on two peacocks at an auction once.

I was told if you keep them in an inclosure at first and feed them they will learn to come back there...They roost in trees and can take the cold weather. (Although I had plans to make them a roosting house for them to sleep in in cold weather)

I guess they eat tons of bugs like tics and such.

I've always been sorry I didn't bid longer...I'm such a tight wad...lol

just wait for it to start screeching LOL. you will be letting the dogs out to chase it off! couple yrs ago i had a big residential installation on Lake Dora, very exclusive neighborhood and my client was a bigtime luxury home builder. first day on the job all i heard was this horrible screaming noise, it was constant and inescapable i honestly thought it was screaming monkeys lol. some people in FL keep exotic monkeys. on the second day, my crews pointed out to me it was several peacocks, the homeowner actually told my guys they could kill some for him. apparently some neighbor had a few and now there are close to 100, roosting all over this beautiful wooded area. ~ liz

I have a few peacocks- the male is beautiful!! Unfortunately the females are 'bland' in color so they won't show up while sitting on a nest. I have the most horrid neighbors- we are very rural- they lt their dogs run loose- and they will kill the pea's- so they are penned now.
The 'screaming' lasts only during breeding time- they are calling for other pea's. The male's long tail is also there only during breeding- they lose it during the late summer and start growing again about January.
I soooooo want a white one!! A day old white chick is about $125- too much for me...

When I was a young girl in Seattle my dad and mom belonged to a golf course for business reasons. They had several peacocks there, and their cries disturbed me until I figured out where that frightening "Help!" was coming from. I'll always associate the Englewood golf course with peacocks. Maybe the groundskeepers didn't have to use as many pesticides??

That's so funny, sjerin. When we first moved here 20 years ago we, of course met all the neighbors. One couple lived about 2 miles away had peacocks. My DH and I could swear they were calling their owner. His name was Harold. I can only say that I'm glad I didn't live any closer. The noise must have been deafening up close.

A farm across the valley from us have them, and they (or maybe it) call each morning. I've never seen them (or it) but I hear it each day......EARLY.....how long do they live? I guess they must have more than just one, hard to tell, because we have heard it for at least 10 or 12 years.

We used to have two, a male and a female. I loved having them around. One day a neighbor from a ways off let her two little dogs out and they killed both peafowl. I was sooo mad. The male loved to walk around our pickup and look at his reflection in the bumper.
